More about Boom Boom...
Games: Super Mario Bros. 3
This fearsome-looking Koopa deserves much better
than he's fared. He was the mini-boss in Mario 3, appearing at the
end of every fortress and on some doomships in Dark Land. Despite
his tough appearance he's incredibly simple to beat once you know what
you're doing. He takes three stomps on the head and he gets faster
after each stomp, but once you learn the timing he can be stomped right
after he emerges from his injured animation, and thus he's become something
of a joke. About halfway through the game he gains the ability to
fly after one stomp, and if he does get off he ground he can be difficult
to measure; but again, he can be stomped before he even gets that far.
Nintendo seems to have gone out of their way to ignore him as he is one
of the few enemies in Mario 3 not to have reappeared elsewhere after recent
appearances from Angry Sun and Rocky Wrench. Right now the only other
Mario 3 enemy I can think of who hasn't appeared elsewhere is Stretch.
Boom Boom may not have done too good a job of guarding the Koopa strongholds,
but he's still iconic of Mario 3 and I'd be happy to see him again.
