More about Buzzy Beetle...
Games: Super Mario Bros, Paper Mario, New Super
Mario Bros, etc.
A member of the Koopa Troop from the start and
frequent opponent of Mario, there's really only two big differences in
form between Buzzy Beetle and series main stay Koopa Troopa.
First, Buzzy Beetle is fireproof. Koopa Troopa is not! So this slow-moving, black-shelled foe is just a little bit tougher than your average Koopa Troopa. As a result he appears frequently in the extra quest of Super Mario Bros, as well as in the Lost Levels.
The second difference though is that Buzzy Beetle is not nearly as famous. He never appears quite as frequently as Koopa Troopas do, and is often relegated to a few cave levels in the games in which he does appear, while in other games he doesn't manage an appearance at all. There are a couple other variations of Buzzy Beetle, from the SMB3 upgraded version that could walk on ceilings, to the flying Parabuzzies, and maybe even to Spike Tops. But there are way more variations of Koopa Troopa (including Bowser himself in a way), and there are no known Buzzy Beetle bosses. Only one Buzzy Beetle has ever had a speaking role in the games, and that is one of Luigi's partners from PM2. Buzzy Beetle has never been playable.
It's a sad tale for this, one of the most forgotten members of the original Koopa Troop, who was at least stronger than some others. Ah well... At least Nintendo seems to remember his name! Unlike Podoboo... So light a candle in memory of the great Buzzy Beetle. And if you drop it on him, no problem! He's fireproof, after all.
