More about Dino Piranha...
Games: Super Mario Galaxy

One question immediately comes to mind upon seeing Dino Piranha: "Good gracious what were they thinking?!" A few seconds later follows the question: "Why didn't they just use already existing and commonly appearing giant Piranha Plant, Petey Piranha?" Neither of these do I have the answer for.

Dino Piranha appears in Super Mario Galaxy and is Mario's first mission upon reaching the Cosmic Observatory.  After skipping across a few asteroids in the Good Egg Galaxy, Mario crashlands into the bad egg of this monstosity, which will crack and start slowly moving about.  In this still mostly-shelled state, it is harmless and this actually serves as a tutorial of sorts for the battle to come, as to progress Mario must spin into the ball at the end of Dino Piranha's tail, which will then fly up into its shell and destroy it completely.  Dino Piranha will emerge, angry as you might expect, and begin charging at Mario, which is when the battle proper begins.  Not that this battle is very difficult!  Mario will need to spin into Dino's tail three more times to win the battle, earn a Star, and continue on his way.

Dino Piranha is also the target of a speed run challenge in the Good Egg Galaxy.  It has a stronger form, Fiery Dino Piranha, found in the Melty Magma Galaxy, that can set its tail ablaze so that it can only be attacked at certain times as it also leaves a dangerous fiery trail in its wake.

If you play SMG and then its sequel, the next question you may ask is: "Why was Dino Piranha replaced by a very similar monstrous Piranha enemy, Peewee Piranha?" Sorry, I don't know that either.  Dino Piranha and Fiery Dino Piranha do appear first and last respectively in the boss run galaxy, though.
