More about Goomba...
Games: Super Mario Bros, and you name
it
Even if you've never played a Mario
game, there's a good chance you know this guy's name or face. Goomba
is synonymous with the Mario series and appears in almost every game, usually
as the lowest of the low flunky. Even the Koopa Troopa, which can
also be defeated by a simple bop to the head, is usually considered a tougher
foe if only because one could easily bump into his shell and get hurt by
having it ricochet off something else. In case Goombas don't appear
often enough already, they also have numerous relatives including Paragoomba,
Microgoomba, Grand Goomba, and bosses Goomba King and Goomboss (who might
be the same). Other famous Goombas include Goombario and Goombella,
partners of Mario in the Paper Mario series, and Professor Frankly, a learned
Goomba from PM2.
Goombas may have been better off had they never received their first stomping in SMB, but players love them for it. Speaking for me personally, I always feel happier when a Goomba is around. I'm so used to their way that I managed to fail to notice for the longest time that they usually walk sideways - what's up with that, anyway? It wasn't until recently that I realized that the reason why they look weird in SMW is because they actually face Mario!
Goomba was pretty much a token selection as a wildcard contender for the Season Ten Tournament, a shout out to the little guy that the Sports Hall reveres. Goomba had managed to cling to a decent record, mainly thanks to a win against multiple fighters in Season Seven thanks to an especially intelligent member of the species. But he surely had no chance in the wildcard round. Maybe he could find a way to deal with Bumpty. The Crystal King would certainly be tough, but maybe, somehow he could find a way. But against Bowser, the mighty Koopa King, his lord and master? Never never never never- Oh wait, he won. ... ... What?!
Somehow, through what dark incantation I don't know, Goomba made it into the 64-man tournament. But the magic wore off once he was faced with a proven Sports Hall Champion, and Goomba was brushed aside by Mack in the first round.
