Kamek the Magikoopa, first seen in Yoshi’s Island, is a magician of the first degree in the Koopa Troop.  Although in Yoshi’s Island he came across as something of a one-trick pony – most of the time he enlarged enemies to become the bosses Yoshi would fight – he also demonstrated a shrinking spell, a teleportation spell, and could transform blocks into enemies – pretty impressive even if other Magikoopas also can do much of this.  He also possesses the power of foresight and predicted the birth of the Mario Bros, though his attempt to capture them at birth so they would not trouble the Koopa Clan was thwarted.  Even if Kamek’s magical abilities shown in the games are not so incredibly widespread, it is largely considered that if anything unexpected has occurred, a Kamek dunnit.

Babysitter of Bowser during his youth, the elderly Kamek seems to have once possessed immense power within the Koopa Troop as he appeared to manage the Yoshi’s Island campaign without any obvious approval or involvement from the presumed King or Queen Koopa of the day.  He may have been given unlimited authority in seeing to Prince Bowser’s interests.  Kamek also appeared to be more or less in charge of trying to capture the Star Children in Yoshi’s Island DS until it was revealed that the modern day Bowser had come from the future and was working with him, but then at least Bowser would have considered his own ward a powerful aid.  For a long time, Kamek had not appeared in a game other than Yoshi’s Island and I considered that the elderly magician must have passed away before the modern time period, but he then began to appear in minor roles in games including Superstar Saga and some Mario Parties, although Kammy has inexplicably replaced him as chief Magikoopa in the Paper Mario series.

While generally disrespected by the youth of today, Kamek may have shown those whippersnappers what’s what when he rose to the top of Roy’s Sports Hall in Season Three.  I’m not sure that most of his competition was actually so impressive, actually, but he did defeat his own boss, Bowser (despite having lost to Baby Bowser in Season Two) on the way to defeating Tanoomba in the finals.  Though he has been retired since taking the season title, he has remained a common sight in the announcer’s booth, frequently announcing high-level matches, although Roy seems to particularly dislike him.  Given his cool facade, Roy may not be comfortable being around someone who may once have read him bedtime stories.

Kamek would prefer not to announce the final match of the Season Ten Tournament, however, since he expects to be in it!  The infamous wizard has entered seeded 6th, and after easily overpowering the massive Manta Storm will face off against Chained Kong in the second round.
