King Boo appears to be a typical member
of the Boo species apart from the fact that he wears a crown and apparently
wields power within his species. While he was portrayed larger than
usual in Super Mario Sunshine - where I think he must have been drunk or
something - he often appears to be the same size as any normal Boo.
A large Boo with a crown also appeared in Super Mario 64 DS but was not
identified as King Boo. The ghostly king first appeared in Luigi's
Mansion, where he decoyed the Mario Brothers into coming to a mansion he
and his Boos had built. The Boos captured Mario until Luigi ended
up freeing him in the end. Before the final battle, King Boo revealed
he'd been out for revenge, although it's hard to say exactly why considering
he'd never been seen in a game before. Apart from the possibility
that Luigi's Mansion really occured before games that had not yet been
released, it's possible that this revenge was on behalf of all Boo-kind.
Or maybe King Boo didn't know what he was talking about. I mean,
his letter was sent to Luigi and didn't mention Mario at all; he was lucky
the portly heroic plumber even showed up.
King Boo isn't known to have a ton of battle prowess. In Luigi's Mansion he piloted a giant Bowser robot and whenever he would get knocked out of it he couldn't do anything except struggle for a while until he could go back into the bot. In Super Mario Sunshine, where he was vulnerable to being hit on the tongue with chili peppers, he mainly just spun a roulette wheel to summon enemies into the area. In other games in which he's appeared as a boss, such as Super Princess Peach and Mario 64 DS if that is indeed him, he mainly just relies on the touch of death. He is, however, pretty dangerous with a bat in the Mario Baseball series and has shown himself to be a speedster in Mario Kart Double Dash and Wii.
Despite not being known as much of a fighter within the games, King Boo has a real stand-out record in the Sports Hall, featuring the second most wins and the third most decisions. He's actually matched up with Petey Piranha five times and leads that series 3-2, though with a loss to Piranha Plant as well, it looks like a tie score, Boos vs. Piranhas. Even with his mixed results against snapping flowers, King Boo has made it into Round Three two times. In Season Four he took the Round Two route but lost to Piranha Plant; while in Season Eight he was able to skip Round Two for the first time but was blocked from reaching the finals by Spy Guy and Wario.
After dropping into second place for most ever Sports Hall victories behind Waluigi, a great chance to catch up appeared to fall right into King Boo's little white stubs, as he entered Season Nine in a match against two untested newcomers. But one of them, the Millenium Star, outshone King Boo and won the day. Despite this, King Boo seemed like a powerful contender going into the Season Ten Tournament as Seed 15, but he was upset in the first round by Yoob and eliminated just like that.
