Mack is a member of the Smithy Gang from Super
Mario RPG and was the first major boss after having invaded and terrorized
the Mushroom Kingdom while Mario was off dealing with Croco. While
his fellow gang members are supposed to represent weapons - the bow and
arrow, spear, and axe - Mack is supposed to represent the knife, but I
had a tough time seeing it while I played and presumed he sat atop a pogo
stick as do his bouncing underlings the Shysters. Mack has a very
rude attitude to go with his fiery demeanor, which he also displays in
battle as he is well known for using Flame and Flame Wall. Despite
his tough guy attitude, he may not be as confident as he would have us
believe, considering he fights alongside his Shysters and will even depart
the battle for a time, leaving Mario to deal with his underlings before
returning. Still, he seemed quite capable of rallying his troops
to the task at hand.
As an early game boss who has not displayed so much confidence, Mack might not be an obvious choice to be a superstar in the Sports Hall, and yet he is in a class almost of his own of undefeated fighters, going an astounding 10-0 and defeating Birdo in the Season One finale to become the winner of the first season of Roy's Sports Hall. His only undefeated classmate is Popple, and Mack has the most wins of the two, making him arguably the most successful fighter ever in the Sports Hall and giving him the highest rank.
Now, Mack will put his reputation (such as he still has one these days) on the line as he returns to fight in the Season Ten Tournament. Though his early success may have led him to become rusty, it also gave him an opportunity to shake off that rust in a low-stress First Round match against Goomba. The footstool minion managed to hang around longer than one might have guessed, but in the end Mack secured the victory with hardly a scratch. Mack looks to have a reasonably tame matchup against Duplighost in the second round as well, but he'll have to be careful. There's no telling what Duplighost may come at him with.
