It used to be commonplace for characters
appearing in a Mario game to appear in another one later, but more recently
it's become much more rare for characters to reappear much unless it's
in a direct sequel like Galaxy and Galaxy 2. Petey Piranha is one
of the few characters to be introduced since, oh, I'll say the N64 era,
who has multiple appearances - and not just a few either, but a lot.
Since his debut in Mario Sunshine, he has been a boss character or even
playable in a large number of games, from major titles like New Super Mario
Bros. to lesser known titles like Mario Pinball. For some reason
he got passed up for the Mario Galaxy games but you have to figure someone
had him in mind when introducing Dino Piranha. Super Mario Sunshine
included a few other characters that would go on to reappear, but compared
to the likes of Bowser Junior and Toadsworth, I'd have to say I dislike
Petey the least. I don't know why Petey Piranha has gone on to appear
so commonly. How about the Goomba's bosses, Goomba King and Goomboss,
or the Bob-omb's boss, Big Bob-omb, or the Koopa Troopa's boss, Hookbill?
The Piranha Plant species already has a number of other bosses, including
Naval Piranha and Lava Piranha, and Petey is not the first. But for
some reason, this sludge-spewing plant has become a staple of the Mario
series today.
Sludge-spewing seems to be about half of his attack pattern, or at least it's what hits you first in Super Mario Sunshine. That and he can somehow use his leaves as wings to fly and to create whirlwinds that aren't terribly dangerous. Even though he's been a boss in at least four games I can think of right now, I don't recall him being very difficult in any of them. In NSMB you do have to beat him while mini in order to unlock world 7 but it's not exactly the toughest thing I've done in a platforming game. Despite being a bit of a softie in battle, he's thought of as a heavy hitter and certainly is in the Mario Baseball titles, where he rivals the likes of Bowser and DK for the most power swing.
Petey Piranha would be doing better in Roy's Sports Hall if he would stop running into King Boo, against whom he has a 2-3 lifetime record, but he has done remarkably well in battles with multiple opponents and while amassing an impressive record he reached Round Three in Season Six but was defeated by Shadow Mario. Then he reappeared in Season Eight but was defeated by... that ghost guy. But even though Petey hasn't had the best results of his species, an honor reserved for the simple Piranha Plant, he is certainly a contender whenever he should appear again.
Despite having dropped his last three decisions up through Season Nine and not having won a match since Season Six, Petey is in attendance for the Season Ten tournament as a high seed. Ranked 25, he had no problem getting back on the right path by subduing Fire Chomp in the first round. Adding to his success is that he has outlasted rival Piranha Plant and Sports Hall bugaboo, King Boo. Petey faced a possible Round Two matchup against Season Two Winner Blooper, but instead Petey enters as the statistical favorite as it is Fawful who will stand in against him. Has Fawful inadvertantly done Petey a big favor, or will Petey be the victim of the next big upset?
