Meet the mighty- er, agile- er, dependable
Piranha Plant. Just about as well known to gamers and non-gamers
alike, even if you've somehow managed to not know the name of this original
member of the Koopa Troop, you must know his silouhette and schtick: move
up and down in a pipe, up and down, up and down- Stop! When Mario
comes near... And, that's about it, that's Piranha Plant for you,
an immobile pipe-dweller with a pattern as predictable as any. In
some games such as the Paper Mario series, he is rooted directly in the
ground, which he can inexplicably burrow through to move towards his foes,
but this is the exception rather than the rule. Piranha Plant may
not exactly be intimidating, yet his simplicity may contribute to him being
one of the most iconic enemies throughout the series. Predictable
though he may be, he's still a man-eating plant that could be living in
a sewer near you. You don't laugh at that!
Piranha Plant has some impressive relatives including the fire-spitting Venus Firetrap and spiked-ball maneuvering Ptooie, not to mention several bosses including Petey Piranha and Naval Piranha. But the Piranha species has not had to resort to these cousins to be successful in the Sports Hall, as the standard garden variety Piranha Plant has done just fine. With 12 winning decisions, he is towards the top of the board for most victories, and has one of the highest winning percentages. He came one Piranha chomp away from winning Season Four but could not touch the unassailable Popple, while he also would have been a Round Three Qualifier in Season One if that season had the same rules as all the others.
Absent from the Sports Hall since Season Four, this ubiquitous member of the Koopa Troop reappeared in the Season Ten Tournament seeded 13, but couldn't approach his earlier success as he was quickly defeated by Cortez in the first round, and eliminated.
