Who's that Mario?  In Super Mario Sunshine, Mario was briefly incarcerated, then forced to restore Isle Delfino after he was framed for defacing the island by this blue lookalike who could run and jump not unlike the famed plumber himself.  Later it was revealed that Shadow Mario was actually Bowser Jr, seen by the public for the first time, using some kind of magic bib to take the form of Shadow Mario and a magic paintbrush (from E. Gadd) to "make his dreams come true".  Apparently Junior dreams about polluting islands and generating random minions to wander about.

This could have been the end of the story for Shadow Mario, a character who never really existed.  But he went on to appear in sports games, alongside Junior!  Now how is that possible?  Some speculate that Shadow Mario always existed as his own character and Junior only chanced to copy him one time.  Another possibility is that the current-day Shadow Mario is actually Il Piantissimo, a masked Pianta who challenged Mario to several races during the adventure and is seen to have found Junior's abandoned paintbrush at the end of the game.  I tend to lean towards the second scenario except I think it's the bib that's responsible for the transformation, not the brush.  One thing's for certain, Shadow Mario, whover he is, is still out there causing doppleganger-type somewhere.

For a few weeks we knew exactly where Shadow Mario was - Roy's Sports Hall.  He rode the tide to the top in Season Six, even defeating his own, er, former self along the way, Bowser Jr, but couldn't figure out Larry in the finale.  After sitting out a few seasons someone claiming to be Shadow Mario reappeared for the Season Ten Tournament, entering as the 20 Seed.  Though he complained in his interviews about wanting to stand out from Mario, he'd have done well to copy the hero even more, because despite easily knocking off Fly Guy in the first round, he couldn't deal with Cortez in the second and was eliminated.
