More about Thwomp...
Games: Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World,
Super Mario 64
Thwomp first appeared as a gray, spiked block
in the fortresses of SMB3. There it was deadly from all sides, and
was immune to normal attacks like jumps and fireballs. However it
could only move up and down, or in rare cases left and right, or in one
case diagonally - but never more than one kind of direction. The
best strategy certainly is either to wait for Thwomp to fall, then cross
under him as he rises back up, or to charge underneath faster than he can
fall; but this tried and true method becomes complicated when there are
hazards around Thwomp such as pits.
This kind of enemy isn't unique to the Mario games, but is fairly iconic of the Mario series since he does appear in many of the big name games since Mario 3. However, while doing so he's formed a split persona of sorts. That's because, starting in Mario 64, Thwomp appeared as a blue cube, without spikes. While it remained dangerous to stand underneath him, he was harmless from all other sides and could even be used as a platform. Thwomp went on to appear in this form in several other games following Mario 64 but then there was a reveral of sorts and Thwomp started to appear again in his original form... sometimes. Other times the blue cube remained...
Thwomp has never been playable but he has managed to appear in most of the RPGs despite that only in Bowser's Inside Story can he be fought, in the form of Sniffle Thwomp. Super Mario World introduced Thwimp, a miniature version of Thwomp that jumps back and forth in an arc. Partners in Time gave us the boss Mrs. Thwomp, a round gray stone.
