Yoob is a giant, alien, and apparently mechanical Yoshi-sort-of-lookalike and was brought into the Mushroom Kingdom of the past by the Shroobs as an egg.  The egg was large, yes, but not as large as Yoob itself and I expect the Shroobs must have used their enlarging laser to increase his size, as we see the Shroobs do once later on as well.  After hatching, Yoob kept itself busy by searching for, then eating Yoshis.  Once inside, the hapless Yoshis were in danger of being caught by Yoob's Shroob accomplices and being thrown onto a complex conveyor belt system that would eventually trap the Yoshis in eggs.  What would happen then?  My guess is that the Yoshis would be transformed into Yoobs themselves, but we'll never know because the Mario Bros, after getting devoured themselves, shut down the operation by defeating Sunnycide, the alien that was controlling Yoob from within.  Then the Marios... well, I'll just say they left.  Yeah...

By most accounts, Yoob has done pretty well in the Sports Hall.  He reached Round Three in Season Eight, and if not for his troubles against Spy Guy he might have reached greater heights.  The thing is, though, it's kind of hard to imagine how someone this large can lose, so I'd say his performance is disappointing.  He did score an upset against King Boo in the Season Ten Tournament as Seed 50, but was overwhelmed by Shadoo in the second round and was eliminated.
