Where's the Water?

It was a peaceful day in Dark Land, and the Koopa Kids were sitting tensely in the Lounge. That morning Bowser had threatened them with the prospect of their cousin Susan coming for a visit, and they were all silently dreading the moment of her arrival.

That moment came all too soon, and Susan bounced into the room, her normal way-too-cheerful self. The Koopalings were rather disappointed to see her.

Since nobody wanted to play Susan's silly games, all the Koopas sat around and stared at each other. Bored, Lemmy idly waved his Magic Wand and caused some objects on a nearby table to float randomly around the room.

"That reminds me!" exclaimed Susan. "I've been practicing my magic, and I can control all the elements!"
Elements were very important to Koopa magic, and each Koopaling had their strengths and weaknesses. Wendy could use the water element to create huge tidal waves and whirlpools, while Morton could barely make a ripple in a pond. He could, however, set a small city on fire with a single wave of his Wand, a feat Lemmy could not hope to duplicate.

Far too proud of herself, Susan demonstrated her abilities by using her Wand to turn on a lightbulb, start a cheery blaze in the fireplace, and fill an empty cup with water. Disgusted, Wendy screamed and stomped out of the Lounge. She stomped all the way to her bedroom, where she sat in front of her computer and looked at her Email.

"Hmmm... spam, spam, spam, delete! "Urgent Message from Water Land"? Better read that!" Wendy opened the Email and read:

"Princess Wendy, we have an emergency! Due to this terrible heat wave, all the oceans, rivers, and lakes in Water Land are rapidly evaporating. Our council discussed solutions but the problem is still up in the air. If you don't do something soon, our whole economy will go down the drain!"

Faster than you would have thought possible, Wendy was out of her room, onto her doomship, and on her way to Water Land. In just a few minutes she had arrived, surveyed the scene, and decided on a course of action. Using all the magic power she had, Wendy pointed her Wand towards what used to be the ocean and willed the water to return. The dry, dusty valley in front of her instantly began to fill with water. Soon the ocean was back at its normal level. Unfortunately, the temperature was still at record highs, and the water had no sooner reappeared than it began to drain again.

Wendy realized she needed help and flew back to the castle to recruit her brothers. She ran into the castle, punched the buttons on the electronic map furiously, and found the other Koopalings in the gym. Completely oblivious to the fact that their sister's Land was facing an economic disaster, they were happily engaged in a game of wandball.

Wandball is a Koopa sport in which two teams with three players each attempt to move a small yellow ball into the opposing team's goal. One team member, the goalie, is allowed to fly, but must remain on their team's side of the playing area. The other players run around using their Wands to zap the ball in an attempt to get it to move towards the goal area. They also may zap other players to distract or annoy them, and thus prevent them from zapping the ball. After three rounds of 20 minutes each (during each round, a different team member must assume the role of goalie) the team which has maneuvered the ball into the goal the most times is declared the winner.

Wendy was not a fan of wandball, so she did not understand why, after she screamed for her brothers to stop running around and help her save her Land, they began zapping her with their Wands.

Eventually, Wendy got everyone to be quiet, and explained the problem. "Will you guys help me bring the water back?"

"I offer my apologies, Wendy, but I am proficient only in the electrical element, and am quite lacking in magical powers pertaining to dihydrogen monoxide," Ludwig said.

"Water," Lemmy quickly translated.

"Alas, we cannot all possess the quality of perfection!" Ludwig sighed. "However, do you not recall how our mutual cousin Susan was able to introduce, ahem, 'water' into a vessel designated for such use?"

"Oh no!" Wendy shook her head. "I am not asking Susan for help!"

Her phone rang, and Wendy answered. "Princess Wendy speaking, how many ways can you tell me I'm beautiful?"

"Wendy, Water Land is a disaster! Tourists are cancelling hotel reservations like crazy! The fish market is collapsing! Not to mention it's just so darn hot!"

Every Koopaling in the room could hear the advisor crying. Wendy hung up.

"Okay," Wendy reluctantly gave in. "But after this, I'll be doubly mean to her!"

Wendy walked into the Lounge to find Susan setting up her latest great game, which she expected her cousins to play with her.

"Susan," Wendy said, not believing what she was about to say. "I need your help."

"Okay!" Susan agreed cheerfully.

Larry snuck into the room. He was not going to let Wendy get off that easily. He wanted to see her grovel (plus, it would make good blackmail material later). "No! Make her beg a little!" he whispered to Susan.

"Um, okay... I changed my mind, I won't help you!" Susan told Wendy.

Wendy groaned inwardly. "Please Susan, you're the only one who can help me!" she begged.

Susan opened her mouth to say she would help, then glanced at Larry, who shook his head. "No, why should I help you?"

"I'm your favorite cousin?"

"Try again."

"Because you're a wonderful kind person who thinks nothing of spending her time helping a fellow Koopa?"

"Getting warmer."

Desperate, Wendy threw herself on the floor. "Because you're the super-cool nice and generous Koopaling who also happens to be beautiful and have amazing magical powers, and I'm just some stupid ugly annoying Koopette who can't even save her own Land!"

Susan glanced again at Larry, who nodded while hoping fervently that he had indeed remembered to replace the batteries in his tape recorder.

"Okay," Susan said. "I'll help you."

Wendy grabbed Susan's hand and dashed back to her doomship. When they arrived in Water Land, Susan surveyed the problem. "Well, duh!" she said after a moment. "It's too hot, of course the water is evaporating!"

Susan raised her wand and used the snow element to lower the temperature and draw heavy clouds across the sky. Then she nodded to Wendy.

Wendy used her magic as she had before, but found that attempt had tired her out and she could create only small puddles in the empty sea basin. Susan smiled and added her power to Wendy's. Together, they quickly brought back all the water.

"Hey," said Wendy, "you're pretty good."

Susan looked up.

"But that doesn't mean I like you," Wendy added as she walked back to her doomship.

Epilogue: Water Land's economy was soon restored, and flourished as it had previously, but most of the money Wendy earned from it was given to Larry to prevent him from letting everyone listen to the tape of her groveling to Susan. The wandball game never officially ended, but Roy's team declared itself the winner and nobody dared to challenge their decision.
