The Accident

By Tabitha Yoshi

Yoshi ran across the lush green grass of paradise island that was Yoshi's Island. He held a huge leaf in his arms. Yoshi’s crimson saddle bounced slightly on his back. He grinned to himself and closed his eyes, feeling the gentle breeze against his soft skin. The green creature turned his head and looked backwards.

“Flame! Hurry up!” he called and then sped onwards.

“I’m coming! Why don’t you slow down a bit, Yosh?” the voice shouted in response from behind Yoshi.

This voice belonged to a male red Yoshi. He was much smaller and a bit younger the Yoshi. He wore a bright blue saddle. Flame was outgoing and adventurous. He always dreampt of going on adventures like Yoshi had. He would early sit near Yoshi and listen to his interesting stories. This Yoster had not been Yoshi’s friend for more then three years, but it felt as if the two had known each other their whole lives. Flameshi also carried a large leaf similar to Yoshi’s.

Yoshi grinned. Today they were going to do a sport the two of them had invented not long ago. Yoshi liked to call it “Wind Surfing”. A Yoshi would locate a leaf of Sunnyflower Plant, or a plant much like a sunflower but much larger, and go to a high spot. One would then jump onto the leaf and jump into the air. The Yoshi would be carried about by the wind. Of course, it was only good for very windy days. And this day was one of the most windy Yoshi could remember.

Soon, Yoshi skidded to a stop. He looked up at the tall tropical tree in front of him. He grinned and lightly placed his left hand on the tree trunk. Soon, Flame appeared near Yoshi. He plopped to the ground, panting hard.

“It’s about time,” Yoshi said jokingly as he sat down near his friend.

Flame only smiled in response.

Five, minutes later, the pair of Yoshis were making their way  This time, Flame was the one in the lead. He pulled himself onto the next branch and sat down.

Yoshi looked up at his friend and smiled. Yoshi finally got to the branch flame was sitting on. “You think this is high enough?” he questioned.

“No way! Higher!” Flame cried out. He snatched the next branch. He was always trying to prove how brave he was. Yoshi shook his head slightly and with a smile, persued the red Yoshi.

Yoshi was extremely tired. Much time had passed. How much, he could not tell. The Yoshi gripped tightly onto the branches. The wind had been getting stronger. And now, Yoshi was fighting so that he would not fall off. Yoshi slowly reached out for the next branch. He knew they where close to the top.

“It’s getting dangerously windy,” Yoshi loudly warned his friend.

“The windier, the better! I see the top! Come on!” Flame cried happily and scrambled towards the top.

Finally, the two Yoshis had reached the top. They were resting, for the climb up was long and tiring. Yet the wind conditions were terrible, and the two of them still had to grip tightly onto the branches. Then, Yoshi glanced over at  Flame. “We need to go down,” he commanded.

“No way! We just got here!” Flame reasoned. He stood up. “Ready now?”

“Okay...” Yoshi mumbled. He picked up the leaf and took a deep breath. This wasn’t safe. But he couldn’t back down.

“One… two… three!” the two of them said in unison. At three, Yoshi ran off the end of the branch he was standing on. Then, he firmly placed his leaf-board under his feet. The Yoshi nervously bit his lip.

Yoshi’s fear washed away. He smiled as he wooshed around and around. It was as if he was riding in a giant whirlpool! Suddenly, a wind current wooshed him up into the air, then way back down. Now he felt like he was riding huge giant waves! Out of the corner of his eyes, he spotted Flame. “Whoo-hoo!” Yoshi called with great joy.

Suddenly, a huge gust of wind overcame Yoshi. It was terribly strong! His leaf went out of control, and he spun around rapidly. Then he began to plummet towards the ground. He had no time to call for help, it happened all too quickly. Yoshi then tumbled down into a tree and fell though the branches. The tips of the branches starched him all over. Then, incredible pain. It all went black.

Flame didn’t know anything was wrong until Yoshi crashed into the tree. He thought he was just showing off, so the whole time Flame had been chanting, “Yoshi! Yoshi! Yoshi!” When he saw him fall though the tree, he became terrified. It was then that Flame was hit by the same gust of wind that hit yoshi. He lost control too, and spun towards the ground. But he was luckier then Yoshi. He landed in a soft bush.

Flame felt his heart beating loudly in his chest. He sprung up and ran towards the tree Yoshi had fallen under. “YOSHI!!!” screamed Flame. “Where are you?!” he screamed at the top of his lungs. Flame could feel the branches poking and prodding him, but he didn’t care. He had to find Yoshi..

Flame's eyes grew wide at his next site: Yoshi’s mangled body and twisted body laid down on the ground. Flame rushed to his side. The red Yoshi fell next to him. He wanted to help but... they say you're not supposed to move an injured person. The only thing he could think of was to call for help. “HELP!!!” he shouted. Flameshi had never screamed any louder in his whole life.

Flame stood outside a small hut. Inside was his friend Yoshi, laying in a bed. Others told him he had a coma. Flameshi was unsure of what that meant, but it sure sounded bad. And it was all his fault. Yoshi told him it was dangerous, but he just had to reach the top of the tree.

Flame took a deep breath and entered. He frowned as he saw Yoshi, laying in the bed. He looked peaceful though, better then when he was lying on the ground after the fall. Flame then sat down by his friend, kneeling on the floor. He laid his head of the edge of the bed and muttered, “I’m sorry.”

Flameshi spent most of his time the next day at the hospital. He felt so horrible for hurting Yoshi so much. He would repeat in his mind, ‘He’ll be ok… He’ll be okay...’ He often talked to his friend. Right now, he was leaning near the door. “When you wake up and get better, we can go look for watermelons. I’ll even carry them.” He attempted to smile, a weak smile. But he was really aching inside.

Just then, the door opened. Two men entered, looking much alike. One was shorter and a bit tubbier. He wore red spenders and had a red hat with a white ‘M’ on it. The other was a bit taller, obviously older. He wore green. This man’s hat was green, with a white ‘L’. They both had mustaches.

Flame guessed this was Mario and Luigi. Normally, he would be happy to meet them. But he knew they were here to visit Yoshi. The two of them talked in a different language than Yoshis, but Flame could tell what they were saying by the tone of their voices. Thinks like, ’Get well soon, Yoshi’ and ’We know you’ll be fine.’ They stayed for a long time, and seemed sad when they had to go.

“Goodbye,” Flame said sadly. They waved to them. ‘After Yoshi gets better, I must meet them,’ Flame thought. But what if Yoshi never got better? What if… he didn’t pull though? It was all his fault... all his fault. No, he could not think of something so terrible.

Threes days. Three days since it happened. Flame was slumped in a nearby chair, half dozing. He was very tired, and one could tell. His youthful face was gone, and so was the spark in his eyes.

Yoshi groaned softy, and rolled over. He opened his eyes and glanced around. Ouch! He ached! Yoshi laid there, trying to remember what happened. He was wind-surfing. Yes. Then he fell. And got hurt. So he must be in the hospital hut. Yoshi glanced over to the nightstand, where many cards rested. It looked like everyone in the village had been here. Two cards caught his eye. Cards from Mario and Luigi! They came all this way… to visit him!

Then he spotted a card from Flame. Flameshi! Had he been hurt? Yoshi got very worried. Then he spotted his friend, slumped in a chair. Yoshi decided not to wake him. In fact, he felt very tired himself. He examined his broken right arm and left leg. He also felt a brace around his neck. Yikes.

Yoshi yawned, and slept.

He woke later, hearing Flame’s voice. “I wish we’d never gone wind surfing. This whole thing could have been avoided.”

Yoshi smiled slightly and opened his eyes. He saw his friend staring out the window. “Well, it was pretty fun until I crashed!”

Flame jerked himself around. “Yoshi! You’re awake!” He scrambled over. “Are you ok? Does it hurt? Do you need anything?” he talked very quickly.

“Slow down!” Yoshi said with a small laugh. Ow! Maybe he shouldn’t laugh for awhile. It felt like he broke a rib. “I’m ok, but lots of things do hurt. I don’t think I need anything…” Yoshi could feel himself drifting back into another sleep. He forced himself to stay awake.

“I’m so happy! You’re ok!” Flame jumped up and down. “But... I’m so sorry... It’s all my fault.”

Yoshi yawned. He wanted to stay awake... he needed to know how long he’d been asleep... he needed to tell Flame that it wasn’t his fault. “Sorry Flame, I think I’m going to slee...”

The last think Yoshi heard was Flame saying, “You just woke up!”

The next time Yoshi woke up, he was alone. He sighed. This was strange. He seemed to be drifting in and out of sleep lately. Oh how much time had passed! He wanted to know!

Yoshi turned his head and read some of the fronts of his cards. He smiled. So many people cared about him. He was lucky. Then he slept again.

Yoshi woke up again. A light blue Yoshi was standing over him. “Karama,” Yoshi said. He knew everyone in the Yoshi tribe. Karama was the healer.

The kind Yoshi smiled. “Flame told me you’ve been awake.”

“Where is he?” Yoshi wondered.

“He never wanders far. I think he’s standing outside the door, waiting for me to finish with you.”

“How long have I been asleep?”

“The coma? Three days?” she replied.

Three days? He was in a coma three days, and been passing in and out of sleep for… “How long have I been passing in and out of sleep? When will I get to stay awake longer?”

“Full of questions.” Karama smiled and fiddled with a few medications. She stuck a needle in Yoshi’s arm. He didn’t feel the thin prick in his arm. “Four days. You’ve been in the hospital for a week. You should be able to stay awake longer soon.”

Karama seemed to finish. “Well, I better go then. Goodbye.” As she exited, Flame entered.

“It’s not your fault,” Yoshi said, first thing. “In fact, you saved my life.”

Flame froze. He then sat on the floor. “If it wasn’t for me, none of this would of happened. You wouldn’t be here.”

“But if something like this happened to me, who would help me? Even if you weren’t there, some gust of wind would catch me while I was wind-surfing. No one would be there to call for help,” Yoshi said. He was really very grateful for his friendship with Flame, and didn’t like the idea of his friend feeling guilty for something he could not control.

“I guess you’re right,” Flame emitted.

Yoshi felt the sleep creeping up on him. “Sorry Flame… looks like I’m sleeping again…” Then, Yoshi slept.

It was not long after this that Yoshi did not need to sleep as much. He could now control when he slept, and the painkillers did not make him nearly as drowsy. He slowly healed, and Flame did not leave him at all during this period of time. Yoshi also received visits from the other tribe Yoshis. Mario, Luigi, and Peach came by. He was then able to walk around, with crutches of course. With each passing day, his broken bones healed, little by little.

One Year Later...

Yoshi ran across the lush green grass of paradise island that was Yoshi's Island. He held a gigantic basket in his arms. Yoshi’s crimson saddle bounced slightly on his back. He grinned to himself and closed his eyes, feeling the gentle breeze against his soft skin. The green creature turned his head and looked backwards.

“Flame! Hurry up!” he called and then sped onwards. He could not wait until he ate the juicy green watermelons.

“Slow down!” Flame begged. He had been changed and would not push Yoshi into doing anything he did not want to do again. Flame also learned to be more careful. Yoshi’s accident was tear-jerking, but it was a much needed lesson. It was just an event in life. Flame smiled as he tried to catch up with Yoshi. He could say, he was very happy and excited to see what adventures lay ahead.
