Chapter 1: The Death, the Mission, and the Mysterious Shadow
Princess Peach, Luigi, and Toad were mourning over Mario back at Peach’s castle. Peach was the most heartbroken. Everything that happened flashed before her eyes. Mario, Luigi, Toad, and herself went to Castle Koopa to do a surprise attack on Bowser and the Koopalings, only to have the Koopas get the drop on them. The Koopalings took them to their dungeon and then separated Mario from them. Then, Roy, surrounded by the other Koopalings and Bowser, pulled out a knife and repeatedly stabbed Mario in his chest until Mario hung limp in Roy’s hands. Mario was dead. Peach cried Mario’s name until she was bursting into tears. Luigi gathered his strength and busted the dungeon door down, and he, Peach, and Toad escaped back to the castle. They hadn’t stopped crying since.
Finally, a few hours after they got back to the castle, Luigi said, “Those Koopas are going to pay for my brother’s death. I’m going to destroy those Koopas and have my revenge.”
“No,” yelled Peach, “I’m not going to let you die, too! Please, don’t!”
“I’m sorry, Princess,” Luigi said, “But I must get revenge, and if I die, at least I’ll be with my brother.” Then Luigi ran off into the night with a new mission in mind. All Peach could do was cry.
Suddenly, a few minutes after Luigi left, Peach saw someone standing on the window ledge. She only saw a glimpse of it before it disappeared almost immediately. She thought she saw Mario, but that could not be. ‘Mario is dead,’ Peach thought, ‘so how can he have been at the window?’ Peach went to bed weeping and thinking about the mysterious figure in the window.
Chapter 2: Luigi, Ludwig, Lemmy, and Wendy’s Demise
Luigi ran up to Castle Koopa and snuck in through a secret entrance that Mario had shown him a few years back. He sneaked through the halls and destroyed any guards he encountered along the way. Eventually, he found Ludwig’s room. Ludwig was constructing a new machine inside.
When Ludwig noticed Luigi, he said, “Yikes! Luigi! What are you doing here?”
“I’m here to get revenge for what you did to Mario!” Luigi then jumped and did a flying kick, which Ludwig dodged. Instead the kick hit Ludwig’s machine. The machine started to overwork until it started to glow. “Uh oh,” Luigi and Ludwig said simultaneously.
BOOM!
Suddenly, all the Koopalings and Bowser rushed to Ludwig’s room to see what happened. They all eventually found the ruins of Ludwig’s room and some armories that surrounded it. They could find no trace of their lost sibling or Luigi, who they didn’t know was there.
Lemmy, who had missed out on the action, raced over on his ball, only to hit a rock and fall into the pit left by the explosion. All the remaining Koopalings (Roy, Larry, Iggy, Morton, and Wendy) and Bowser could only watch as their ball-riding sibling fell down the bottomless pit.
Wendy, who was so heartbroken for her lost siblings, was crying the hardest she had ever cried since she was born. She knew she couldn’t bring them back, so she threw herself into the pit. Iggy, Larry, Morton, Roy, and Bowser screamed her name into the night as she fell down into the pit.
* * * * *
The next day, back at Peach’s castle, the news that Luigi was dead had reached her, and she was crying her eyes out as she also thought about Mario. The princess was becoming a nervous wreck because her loved ones were all gone, and the kingdom was open for attack.
However, Bowser and the remaining Koopalings were not in the mood for ruling the Mushroom Kingdom because they too had lost some loved ones. Ludwig, Lemmy, and Wendy... it was too much for them. The Koopas were now nervous wrecks, just like the princess, and both sides were about to collapse.
Chapter 3: Light Mario’s Appearance
Up in Heaven, Mario and Luigi were sitting on a cloud, looking quite transparent. Ludwig was asleep on another cloud, Lemmy was sitting on his ball, looking at the sky, and on her private cloud, Wendy was throwing a tantrum.
Mario and the others, after a few hours of getting acquainted, had all given up hope on seeing their friends and families ever again. They all sat on the same cloud, looking down on the Mushroom Kingdom and Castle Koopa, and wishing they were alive and home.
“You look pretty grim,” said a voice that sounded like Mario, “By your expression on your faces, I’ll say you want to be alive and home.”
“Mario, is that you?” said Lemmy.
“No,” said Mario.
“Look behind you, dope heads!” said the mysterious voice.
Everyone turned around to see the most unbelievable thing. The character in front of them was indeed Mario, but this Mario had a halo over his cap, which made him look like an angel.
“Allow me to introduce myself, I am Light Mario, an exact reflection of Mario’s good side, and the maker of 1-Up Mushrooms and Pick Me Ups,” said Light Mario. “Now I will be happy to grant your wishes to return home fully alive.”
Everyone continued to stare at him.
“… Okay… well, anyway, like I said, I’m the maker of Pick Me Ups, meaning that if you use one, you will return to life, and I can transport you to your house or castle.”
Light Mario was met by five more vacant stares.
“Oh, just use these Pick Me Ups! … Idiots!” Light Mario said.
Everyone realized what to do now, so they used a few Pick Me Ups each and were eventually alive.
“Okay, now for that portal.”
Everyone stared as Light Mario stood still and started building up his chi energy. Everyone gasped as Light Mario started to glow and as his face of determination grew bolder. Suddenly, Light Mario punched the air in front of him, where a warp vortex appeared. Parallel warp vortexes appeared in front of Peach’s Castle and Castle Koopa.
Everyone was amazed, especially Ludwig. “WOW! How did you do that?”
Light Mario replied, “Pretty easy, I just built up my chi energy and focused it into my fist. When I punched, the chi energy stored in my fist disrupted the air, causing a warp vortex to materialize. The energy waves from the created vortex caused a disruption at the area I want to warp to, which created a warp vortex parallel to… this…one.”
Everyone, including Ludwig, had fallen asleep during his explanation.
‘Why do I even bother?’ thought Light Mario.
Light Mario decided to toss them in while they were still asleep, with notes saying what happened after they died and how they got back. He decided to keep himself a secret until the time was right.
Chapter 4: The Marble's Glow
A few days later, everything that happened a few days ago was all forgotten. Mario, Luigi, Ludwig, Lemmy, and Wendy had forgotten Light Mario and started fighting each other again, but not too hard since they were still acquainted. Both sides had finally dried their tears and were living like they usually do.
However, one day, Mario was walking along when he found a marble that had the following words engraved in it:
LIGHT MARIO SECRET ACCESS
Mario thought and thought, but it didn’t ring much of a bell. Mario put it in his pocket, wanting to show it to Luigi. Eventually, everyone who had died gathered to see if it rang a bell, but to no success. No one knew anything about it, but Mario still kept it, thinking it might come in handy some day. Little did he know that up in the clouds, someone was watching him.
* * * * *
Mario was at his house one Sunday, staring at the weird phrase engraved in the marble. He twirled the marble in his fingers, thinking about what it could mean. He had been trying to decipher the riddle of this marble for the past few weeks. Luigi also helped him every few minutes, but to no success. Every historian, scientist, and physicist in the Mushroom Kingdom tried to discover its secret, but like Luigi, they had no success. Even Ludwig, Lemmy, and Wendy, the Koopalings that felt involved in this, tried to solve the puzzling puzzle, but were unsuccessful too. Everyone gave up the previous day, but not Mario. He kept the marble even though Princess Peach told him to throw it away.
Mario decided to go to bed and think about it in his sleep. Mario instantly fell asleep when he got to bed. Luigi, who had left Mario home to go to one of Peach’s five-star parties, came in an hour later. Luigi couldn’t believe Mario was still at the marble case. He also couldn’t believe Mario would want to miss one of Peach’s parties. Mario loved Peach’s parties, usually because he was the main guest. Everyone couldn’t believe Mario wasn’t there, especially Peach. She was confused why Mario would not attend her party. Without Mario there at the party, the party was a bummer fest.
But yet, Luigi was thankful that Mario was finally asleep. Mario hadn’t slept in days, and bags were forming under his eyes. Luigi tried everything to put Mario to sleep, but to no success. Luigi walked to his bed thinking ‘Mario must have decided to sleep to clear his thoughts and attend Peach’s next big party next week.’ Luigi covered himself up and went to sleep.
A few hours later, Mario awoke with an empty stomach. Mario walked to the kitchen to find the marble glowing and floating. Mario was amazed. Mario stood there staring at the marble as it descended and landed on the stand Mario bought for it.
The next day, Luigi woke up and found Mario still staring at the marble. “Aw geez,” Luigi said, “I can’t believe you’re still at it. You have been working at that marble for weeks, almost months. Just give up!”
Mario snapped out of his trance. “Oh yeah? Well you won’t believe what happened last night. I woke up, and the marble was glowing and floating in midair.”
“You’re right, Mario. I don’t believe you!”
“Really! It happened! Please believe me! Please, please, pl… HEY! WHAT ARE YOU DOING, LUIGI?"
“Mario, this marble is driving you crazy! I need to put a stop to this before it gets out of hand, and I need to stop it NOW!” Luigi said before chucking the marble out the window.
“NOOOOO!” Mario said before diving out the window after the marble. It took a few minutes, but Mario found the marble. He stored it in his pocket to keep it safe. A few seconds later, everything went black as someone hit Mario on the head.
Chapter 5: Bowser’s Revenge
An hour later, Mario gained consciousness and realized his hands and legs were chained to a wall in what seemed like a dungeon. As his vision came into focus, he noticed two figures along the opposite wall. One was also chained to the wall. It was wearing a green hat and blue overalls. Mario suddenly realized it was Luigi. “LUIGI!” Mario yelled to the already conscious Luigi.
“MARIO!” Luigi replied back.
“SHUT UP!” said a voice belonging to the second figure. Mario had heard that voice over a million times in his adventures. This voice belonged to the King of Koopas himself, Bowser!
“Why did you kidnap us?” Mario said to the mighty monster.
“For two reasons. One, to make it easier to rule the Mushroom Kingdom, and two, to finally get sweet revenge for what you two did to prevent me and my Koopalings from ruling it in the past. HA HA HA!” Bowser laughed.
Bowser left Mario and Luigi in the dungeon to rot, with the Koopalings to feed them scarcely. Bowser jumped aboard his doomship and flew off to Peach’s Castle. Bowser landed and captured the Mushroom Kingdom at long last, and his Koopa army cheered him on.
Meanwhile, the Koopalings were feeding Mario and Luigi a pea each (except for Ludwig, Lemmy, and Wendy, who sometimes sneaked in a chicken leg each). That night all the Koopas celebrated the capture of the Mario Bros. and the Mushroom Kingdom. Goblets were held up high as the feast carried on for a couple of days.
Chapter 6: Light’s Mario’s Reappearance and The Great Escape
In the dungeon, Mario and Luigi were still hanging around (get it?), thinking about everything that had happened since they were caught. Luigi had given up and was muttering something about defeat. Suddenly, Mario knew how to decipher the riddle of the marble. If he could just reach it and decipher the code...
Mario started yanking against the chain on his right hand, the hand closer to his pocket. More and more, his hand approached his pocket, until he finally reached it. He pulled out the marble and a magnifying glass, put one in each hand, and, through the magnifying glass, looked at the back of the marble. The strange message on the back of the marble looked like this:
I S I U M D M O E N T F H E E P O A
W
E T R O E F L N I G E H T M M A Y R
I ! O !
Mario looked at the inscription, marking every third letter out in his head until it looked like this:
I S I
U M D
M O E
N T F
H E E
P O A
W
E T
R O E
F L N
I G E
H T M
M A Y
R I !
O !
The letters that Mario crossed out spelled out the following phrase: I DEFEAT ENEMY! The letters that Mario didn’t cross out spelled the following chant: I SUMMON THE POWER OF LIGHT MARIO!
Mario didn’t know if he could do it, but he decided to try the chant on the marble. If this didn’t work, he, Luigi, and the entire Mushroom Kingdom were doomed.
“Luigi, remember the marble? Well, I think I solved the riddle. I’m going to say the chant and release the power of the marble,” said Mario.
“You still got that marble?! Oh well, go ahead, waste your time, we’re already doomed!”
“Ok.” Mario dropped the marble onto the floor and started to clear his throat. “I summon the power of Light Mario!” Nothing happened. Mario repeated the chant a bit louder. “I SUMMON THE POWER OF LIGHT MARIO!”
This time, something did happen. The marble twinkled a little bit before turning into a ball of light. Luigi was speechless as the ball projected a beam of rainbow-colored light toward the clouds above. It wasn’t too long before the ball of light turned back into a marble.
“Smooth move, Mario,” said Luigi, “All you did was set off a light show. Some marble!”
A moment after Luigi finished speaking, a sudden spark of electricity appeared and created a warp vortex. A man stepped out, his halo shining, his overalls hustling, his red hat on his head… that’s right. It’s Mario who stepped out of the vortex, but the halo indicates that this Mario is Light Mario, the exact reflection of Mario’s good side.
Light Mario said to Mario, “Congratulations, Mario, on figuring out how to summon me. You are very bright for a man your age.”
Mario and Luigi stared at him and said simultaneously, “Do I know you?”
“O.O Maybe I should help jog your memory.” Then Light Mario put his hand on Mario’s forehead and his other hand on Luigi. Memories started to flow through until they remembered everything that happened when they had died. After a bit of talking, Light Mario examined their chains, then charged up an energy blast, destroying their chains.
Mario asked, “How did you do that?”
“Let’s just say it’s a power that gets even more powerful for each good deed you do, Mario,” said Light Mario.
“So how do we get out of here?” Luigi asked.
“Our best chance is to find Bowser without anybody seeing you.” Light Mario took out a map of Bowser’s Castle. "Here's what you do..." Light Mario whispered for the next five minutes the plan. "Okay, got my plan?”
“Yeah,” said Mario and Luigi.
"All right! Enter the shaft here, and take the map with you. Oh, and Mario, take the marble too! You can summon me with it anytime! So long, and good luck!” Light Mario jumped back into the vortex, which closed after he jumped in.
Five minutes later, Mario opened the ventilation shaft above the throne room, where the document was, wearing a black spy suit.
"Okay, Luigi," Mario whispered, "Lower me down slowly!"
Luigi lowered the rope a few inches at a time until Mario could jump down to the ground. Mario tiptoed quietly across the room, jumping where Light Mario had said there were motion sensors. He approached the document from the side, because a trapdoor was in front of it. Mario touched the document, and quickly swapped it with a small statue of Bowser. Mario quietly slipped back to the rope, but tripped and touched the last motion sensor.
RED ALERT! RED ALERT! INTRUDERS IN THE THRONE ROOM!
"Ah, great!" Mario said. He ran to the rope and yelled to Luigi, "The guards are coming! Pull me up!"
Luigi pulled the rope as hard as he could and had Mario in the vent in a second. Guards swarmed the room and tossed fireballs into the vent. Luckily, The Brothers were halfway through the vent.
"Mario, is it getting hotter or is it just me?" Luigi observed. To the horror of the Brothers, they realized the temperature was over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The duo quickly ran through the vent, making it out as the temperature reached 200 degrees (which would have killed them). The Mario Brothers ran all the way back to the princess while avoiding stray fire.
Epilogue: The New Friend
Light Mario’s plan had been a success. The Mario Bros. had escaped with the document, the Mushroom Kingdom was back in the right hands, and the Koopas were outraged. Things were practically back to normal.
Light Mario has already become friends with the princess and the Toads, making him an excellent topic at parties. Light Mario has also started a spy club and many other clubs to keep everyone excited. And since Mario solved the marble mystery, he’s attending Peach’s parties again with Light Mario as his special guest.
