Dragon Journey

By Zach

Prologue: The Burning Village

Out of nowhere the Koopa village was attacked by Bowser and his Koopalings. No one was there to save the innocent Koopas, certainly not Mario and Luigi. Only one survived.

A 15-year-old male Koopa with a shiny purple shell with dragon wings tattooed on it held a young 14-year-old Koopa girl in his arms. She had a shiny red shell and pale red eyes. Tears came from the light blue eyes of the male Koopa as he held her closely.

“If only I could see your beautiful eyes one last time, Dragon…” the Koopa girl, said coughing after her words.

“Please Tala, don’t go,” Dragon, the other Koopa, cried. “I don’t want to lose you… I love you...”

“I love you too, Dragon… Please take this to remember me,” Tala said, giving Dragon a blue-gemmed bracelet and closeing her eyes for the last time.

Dragon carried her over to a shrine-like area. It had no walls but eight columns held a roof above a bed-shaped pedestal, on which Dragon placed Tala. Then he left.

There was nothing left for Dragon to look for. His entire life had been crushed. 15 years of his life, devestated in a matter of minutes.

Dragon thought of only one thing as he walked out of the village: Revenge...

Chapter 1: Takeover

Three years later, Bowser and the Koopalings were invading Peach's Castle. On there side were hundreds of Koopa solders all made of colorful liquids. Not even the combined powers of Mario, Luigi, and their friends were enough to stop the Liquid Koopa army.

“Ludwig, I must admit, your idea-” Iggy started.

“Was pretty clever,” Lemmy finished.

“Yes, I know. Who would have thought that by combining the DNA of the Shadow Mario with that of the Koopa Troopas we would have an unstoppable army? I’ll tell you who: Me!” Ludwig bragged.

Mario and Luigi retreated with the others, managing to at least get Peach out of there with most of the residents of the castle.

Later that day Larry was sneaking around the castle. Since this was the first time the Koopalings had actually been in Peach's Castle, Larry thought it was a good time to go exploring. He found one room that seemed to be empty. When he entered a Koopa rushed at him. The Koopa looked much like Tala… In fact, it was.

“Who are you?” Tala said holding two daggers to Larry’s neck.

“Hey, no fair! I’m the sneaky one! KING DAD! KING DAD! HELP!” Larry yelled.

Bowser walked in, noticing Tala. Tala turned towards Bowser, ignoring Larry and now focused on Bowser. Bowser looked surprised, seeing a normal Koopa sneak up on his sneakiest son.

“You must be blind. Don’t tell me you never heard of King Dad,” Larry said, getting up and dusting himself off.

“I am blind,” Tala said.

“Oh,” Larry said, noticing for the first time that she was indeed blind. Bowser noticed this too and knew she also suffered from amnesia because, in Bowser’s words, whoever could forget the greatest Koopa ever must have memory problems.

“Now now, Larry, is that anyway to treat our guest?” Bowser said to Larry, then turning to Tala. “Tell me what your name is,” Bowser asked Tala.

“My name… I think it's Tala, though I can’t remember much else,” Tala answered putting her daggers down.

“Tala, eh? Well you seem to be quite the ninja…

Ludwig came in, having heard Larry’s scream. He recognized Tala as one of the Koopas from the Village three years ago. “Hey King Dad, can I have a word with you alone for a moment?” Ludwig said.

Bowser left the room briefly with Ludwig. Larry kept Tala busy in the room by asking questions. “How did you end up here?” he asked.

“I don’t know. I just woke up here about three years ago. Princess Peach said she'd found me and she tried to help me recover my memories,” she answered.

“Oh… Hey, if you’re blind how you could tell where I was and catch me?”

“Actually it’s hard to explain. I can just sense where people are. I don’t think I was always blind.”

Meanwhile, Ludwig was having a talk with Bowser.

“Do you know who that is? She’s one of the victims from the Koopa attack three years ago. I thought we killed them all,” Ludwig said.

“She has amnesia from what I can tell.  We can use that to our advantage,” Bowser said.

“Good idea, King Dad. But why waste time when we have an unstoppable army at our disposal?” Ludwig said

“I expect something to happen to them, considering you made them. She could be a backup plan… She is skilled at being stealthy,” Bowser said.

“Yeah, I heard Larry scream,” Ludwig said. “I thought only Wendy could be that loud.”

“Anyway, let’s see... How should we get her to believe she’s on our side?” Bowser said, thinking hard.

Ludwig thought for a second. “Hey, I got it! Make her believe she’s one of us. You know, the Koopalings,” Ludwig suggested.

“That’s a dumb idea, Ludwig. It will never work… Wait, I got it! How about we make her believe she’s a Koopaling like you and Larry?” Bowser suggested.

“Uhh, yeah, good idea. Glad you thought of it,” Ludwig said, knowing but not caring that Bowser was taking his idea.

“I’m a genius. Ludwig, you should take notes from my ideas,” Bowser said, heading back into the room.

Larry and Tala were now just waiting for Bowser and Ludwig to return. Bowser entered first, Ludwig following shortly after.

“So Larry, did you enjoy your reunion with your big sister?” Bowser said, winking at him.

Larry looked confused but then got the idea. “Yeah, it’s been so long since I have seen her, I didn’t even know I was talking to her,” Larry said, winking back.

Tala looked confused. “What do you mean? Are you my father?” she said to Bowser.

“Yes I am. Ludwig here can vouch for me too,” Bowser said.

“Yup, you’re a Koopaling like us, Sis,” Ludwig said, sounding very convincing.

Tala left it at that and believed she really was Bowser’s daughter. All the Koopalings made sure of this as well.

One month later...

Bowser's Castle had been redecorated and placed on top of Peach's. Kamek, the head of the Magikoopas and the Koopas' prophet, woke in the middle of the night drenched in sweat.

“Oh no! I must inform Lord Bowser at once!” he said, rushing off to the throne room. “Bowser, your wickedness, I have urgent news,” he yelled as he raced into the throne room.

“What? Spit it out, Kamek! What has happened?” Bowser said, yawning.

Kamek's screaming had also woken up the Koopalings, including Tala. “What’s all the ruckus, Kamek? I was having the best dream; I was pounding Iggy,” Roy said, yawning.

“That wasn’t a dream! Nw get off me! Go beat up on someone else for a change!” Iggy said.

“Hey, I can’t help it no one else is here to beat up. Nobody has dared to even challenge us and our army,” Roy said while looking over to Larry, who just backed behind Tala.

“You might not have to worry about that for long. Lord Bowser, I have had a terrible vision. A Koopa and his friends were bursting through your forces,” Kamek said, sounding worried.

“Impossible! My Liquid Koopas are un stoppable! Not even Mario could find the secret to stopping them!” Ludwig said.

“Well until then I’ll have to pound on someone else,” Roy said, walking over to Tala and Larry. “Outta da way, I got pounding to do unless you want to deal with me,” Roy said.

“Just try me, Roy,” Tala said, eerily calm.

Roy just backed away. “You… You’re just lucky I don’t fight girls,” Roy said with fear in his voice.

“Anyway, I think we should prepare for the time when this happens… and pray that for once my prophecy will not come true,” Kamek said.

“Yes, but until then we fight the ones Kamek told us about. Lemmy, Iggy, you two go to Windy Meadows and make sure this group Kamek talked about is stopped at all costs,” Bowser said.

Iggy and Lemmy said nothing and left.

Chapter 2: Conflict with Hip and Hop

Author's Note: I would like to give credit to the following for letting me use their characters in my story:
Dark Koopa
Regal Cannon
Nermal

Dragon, now 17 years old, was with with three others: a purple-shelled Koopa of around 17 named Dark; a white Bob-omb with a monocle, red vest, and blue shoes of about 30 named Regal; and a black Yoshi with red around the eyes of about 6 Yoshi years named Matt.

They were traveling across Windy Meadows. Many plants and animals could be seen throughout the area. Most of the plants looked dead, however.

“Tell me again why we are here, Dark,” Dragon said calmly.

“We are here to free this area from Bowser's control,” Dark said.

“Doesn’t look like he’s done much here,” Dragon said, looking around.

“Not all that is true can be seen, old boy,” Regal said. “What may be calm above ground may not be below. Take a look at some of these plants. They're beginning to wilt and it’s the middle of summer,” Regal said.

Dragon looked around, seeing a wide path of wilted flowers that seemed to stretch out in a predictable path.

“Hmm, I see your point now.  Why does Bowser want this place so badly?” Dragon asked.

“Supposedly the plants here hold very mystical properties due to the water here,” Dark said.

They continued to move onward to a large fountain-like area.  There a rainbow-colored liquid flowed through it.

“This is colorful water?” Matt asked.

“Actually it’s called Life-force.  Supposedly one drop has the ability to heal the wounded and bring back the dead,” Dragon said calmly. “I heard rumors about this fountain.”

“The fountain of youth… With this Bowser would never die… Now I see why he wants it,” Regal said, walking around the fountain, examining it.

“But… I don’t get it. If it’s so easy to get here, why doesn’t everyone use it?” Matt asked.

“The water’s only effective on plants,” Dark answered. “Many people have traveled here and realized that, but… now some are beginning to think that there is a spring underground capable of the same effect on other lifeforms,” Dark said. “Many don’t believe it exists, though.”

The group moved on, looking around for any way underground. Matt noticed a huge hole close to a tree. “Hey, look! There’s an entrance! Let's go!” he said, running to the hole.

Everyone followed him. They got right to the edge of the hole when they were stopped by Dragon.

“What’s the deal? We have to hurry before Bowser’s army gets to the underground springs!” Matt said.

“We are being watched,” Dragon said pointing to the fountain.

The fountain's water rose, forming four Liquid Koopas (LK for short) that were as colorful as the water in the springs.  They jumped out of the water and landed right in front of them.

“Who… or what are these things?” Matt said with fear in his eyes.

“I… have no clue,” Dark said, also with fear in his eyes.

The LKs attacked the group, each going for one person.

“Scatter!” Dragon said as they all split up, an LK following each one.

Regal turned shortly after running and attacked the LK by exploding in its face. The LK seemed to explode into small peaces of liquid all over the area. “Hmm. That’ll teach you, chap,” Regal said, laughing afterwards.

The LK’s parts gathered around and combined, reforming the LK.

“Well, this is going to be harder than I thought,” Regal said.

Meanwhile the others had also discovered the LKs' advantage over normal creatures. The LK’s lured the band of four back together.

“Well, what do we do now?” Dragon asked. “There’s no way to beat these things.”

“Well, we could always try running,” Dark said.

The group ran towards the tunnel and jumped in, running as soon as they hit the ground.  The LKs jumped down and followed them. The group, staying ahead of the LKs, managed to get rid of them when they turned a corner, then another close by.  The LKs just ran past them, going down the straightaway ahead of them.

“Well they're not smart, that’s for sure,” Dragon said. “Doesn’t surprise me, though.”

They continued traveling down the tunnels, avoiding the LK soldiers that were down there.

“It puzzles me as to why there are so many tunnels down here when the spring is under the fountain,” Regal said.

“Good question. It must have something to do with the mineral deposits down here. You know not all rock can be drilled through,” Dark answered.

They continued walking down the tunnel, dodging the sight of the LKs left and right.

“I can see how Bowser got control of Peach's Castle. With so many of these creatures, not even Mario could stop them,” Regal whispered.

“These things have to have some sort of a weakness; we just have to find out what it is,” Matt whispered.

They got through the tunnel and entered a small room. Inside the room was a map of the entire tunnel system.

“Odd. Some of these places on the map we haven’t seen yet, and we passed where they should have been,” Regal said while looking at the map.

“Then what does this tell us?” Matt asked.

“It’s a trap. They knew we were coming.  Somehow they knew, that’s why we were ambushed outside and that’s why they are everywhere down here,” Dragon said.

“Then what do we do now if it's been a trap this whole time? We can't just let them get to the springs,” Matt said.

“That’s why we should continue on,” Dark said, grabbing the map and heading out of the room.

They continued on through the tunnels, following the map until they got to a large dome-shaped room in the center with a spring full of the same rainbow-colored water as they had found in the fountain.

“Is this the...“ Matt began.

“Yes, I think it is,” Regal said.

Dragon walked up to the water and observed it. “Who would want to live forever?” he said calmly.

“Why do you say that? Wouldn’t you like to be immortal?” Matt asked.

“… Quite honestly, I don’t want to be alive right now,” Dragon said.

“Why do you keep on going then?”

“Revenge… I want to make Bowser die,” Dragon said.

“Come to think of it, we knew you for almost three years and we don’t know why you are so intent on killing Bowser,” Regal said.

“That’s my business, not yours. I don’t ask you about your personal affairs so don’t ask me,” Dragon said calmly.

Dark turned his attention to the water after noticing it move in place. “Hey guys, you might want to take a look at this,” he said, pointing to the water.

The others turned to Dark and looked at the water. Out of the water formed four LKs like before at the fountain.

“Well this figures,” Dragon said, backing away.

The LK’s stayed where they were as Iggy and Lemmy entered the area through a door on the other side.

“Hey, look Hop, intruders!” Lemmy said happily.

”Hey, maybe they're the ones who’re supposed to beat King Dad,” Iggy said.

They both looked at each other before laughing, Lemmy falling off his ball onto his back. “Yeah right, these guys are weaker than Larry!” they both said, still laughing.

Dragon looked at them and rushed at them in pure anger. “I’ll show you how strong I am!” he said just before the LKs grabbed him and the others.

Dragon struggled to get out of the LKs' grip and was succeeding for a time until Iggy came up and whacked him in the stomach with his wand. “Stop squirming!” Iggy laughed.

Another LK came out of the water and grabbed Dragon. Now two LKs were holding him.

Iggy walked back to Lemmy. “Well Hop, what ya think we should do to them?" Lemmy asked.

“Let’s show them what our LKs can do,” Iggy answered snapping his fingers.

Dragon and the others struggled to get out of the LK’s grip as they pulled them back. Dragon’s eyes filled with fire as he threw one of the LKs off him, punching into its stomach with his fist, which now was covered in flames. The red parts of the LK vanished and the rest of it soon followed. Dragon turned to the other and punched it as well.

Iggy and Lemmy backed away as Dragon helped the others escape from the LKs by using his newly found fire ability. “Woah. Since when could you do that, Dragon?” Matt asked.

“Just now… But anyway, let's teach these kids a lesson,” Dragon said turning to Lemmy and Iggy.

“… St…Stay back… We…We’re warning you,” Lemmy said rolling his ball backwards.

“Let's give these cowards a timeout,” Dragon said, jumping up and slamming down right in front of Lemmy and Iggy, flames bursting around him.

“Run for it!” Iggy yelled, grabbing Lemmy off his ball and running away.

“Hey, my ball! We have to get it before-“ Lemmy said just before Dragon popped it. “Oh never mind,” he finished.

Matt walked up to the spring and examined it. “The water is the exactly the same as what was in the fountain... I guess the rumers were wrong...” he said calmly.

“Well that’s not the last time we’ll see the two of them. Let's go,” Dark said.

“You guys go on ahead, I’ll see if there isn’t anything here we might be able to use,” Dragon said calmly. “Don’t worry I’ll meet you at the inn.”

The others nodded and left. Soon Dragon started looking around for supplies that might have been hidden around. Then Ludwig entered the room through the same way Lemmy and Iggy had left. Dragon turned around and sees him, the two of them recognizing each other from three years ago.

“So you’re the one Kamek spoke about… the one who would dethrone the Koopa family,” Ludwig said. “Well I won’t let you,” he said calmly.

“You’re the one who ruined my life, you and your family… I’ll kill all of you,” Dragon said, rushing at Ludwig with flames around him as he kicked and punched at Ludwig.

Ludwig simply dodged the punches and jumped the kicks, attacking back with his own fire punches and kicks. “See? I can do that too,” Ludwig said, hitting Dragon with a punch that threw him into a wall.

Dragon got up and continued to attack Ludwig, who kept dodging the attacks. Ludwig finally got hit by Dragon's fire kick and tripped. Ludwig quickly jumped back up but Dragon kicked him in the chest, punching him back to the ground. Dragon jumped and punched downward, aiming for Ludwig. Ludwig rolled over just as Dragon hit the ground but was thrown back by the wave of fire sent from Dragon’s impact.

Ludwig got up slowly. “So I see you’re stronger than you look,” he said.

“You’re stronger than I thought as well, but not strong enough to beat me,” Dragon said, rushing Ludwig, who caught him at the last minute, picking him up and throwing him to the wall.

“You foolish Koopa. Don’t you know you cannot compete with me? I was merely toying with you so I could learn your moves and prevent them. And now that I can predict your moves I can defeat you,” Ludwig said, jumping up and punching the floor hard, causing a huge crater to form in the floor of the room.

The whole area shook violently as the roof caved in. Dragon ran out before the cave-in, his body bruised from the battle with Ludwig. He walked to the inn and met with the others. He told them of his battle with Ludwig and what had happened.

However, during that time Ludwig had crawled out of the rubble and headed back to the castle.

Subchapter: Metal Madness

Three weeks earlier...

In Bowser's new castle, a group of Koopas carried an injured Koopatrol to Bowser. The Koopatrol was damaged severely, his right leg torn off and his left arm seemed bitten off. Half his face was scarred badly.

“Lord Bowser, Brajer was hurt badly. We found him in the Piranha Pit,” one of the Koopas said to Bowser.

Bowser looked at the Koopa as if the Koopa had done something wrong when in fact the Koopa was unaware of what he'd done.

“Then take him to the medical room NOW!” Bowser ordered, sounding as if that was the thing the Koopas should have done.

The Koopas took the Koopatrol to the medical room. There scientists and doctors of Bowser’s empire worked their magic to save the injured Koopatrol from a doomed fate. They had to replace his lost limbs with metal ones and the scarred parts of his face with thin sheets of metal.  His left eye was replaced by a golden-colored eye that functioned almost exactly like a normal eye, or so it seemed. The Koopa scientists spoke to each other and Bowser of the eye's enhanced ability to aim and see heat. Bowser was impressed with this but did not show it. His concern for the Koopatrol called Brajer was greater than his interest in the new robotic enhancements.

“Just make sure he survives,” Bowser said, watching the whole thing. Many think it strange how Bowser could care for such a Koopatrol when he shows less care for even his own children. However, this Koopatrol was different. He was an elite general in Bowser’s army and among the strongest of the Koopa race. He had also been Bowser's most loyal general. The Koopatrol, Brajer, was the strongest in Bowser's army, willing to go to any measures to get his job done unless Bowser told him otherwise. He was Bowser's most trusted assistant.

Hours after that event, the new Brajer awoke with a partially metal form.

“So Brajer, you have awoken. Do you like the modifications I have selected for you?” Bowser said, taking credit for the others' work.

“Thank you, Lord Bowser, though I know it was not just you who chose these enhancements,” Brajer said in a sub-mechanized voice. “And Brajer is no longer alive.”

“Really? Then who are you?” Bowser said, understanding what Brajer meant.

“I am Metal Madness,” he said, chuckling, Bowser following afterwards...

Present...

Metal was walking through Dry Dry Desert with a black Boo. The Boo had red and green marks across his body and silver eyes. “Tell me again, Metal, why we are out here,” the Boo said, yawning. “It's so boring here...”

“Because Lord Bowser has sent us here to stop the resistance group trying to take out the clear gem mines,” Metal said calmly.

“Whatever. As long as I don’t die of thirst…” the Boo said.

“Aren’t you already dead, though?” Metal stated.

“Aren’t you?” the Boo replied.

Metal stopped for a second and closed his eyes. “Hmm... Mmy death and yours are two different things,” Metal said, chuckling.

“Whatever,” the Boo said, calmly smirking.
