Act 1: Luigi's Depression
It is a cold winter day and Luigi is in his room, sadly staring at the wall and sulking.
Peach: He's still in his room?
Mario: Yeah, he's still sad about failing that mystery.
Peach: It must've been tough seeing that Mushroomer die. At least he caught the murderer.
Mario: *sigh*
Luigi picks up a piece of paper out of his desk. The piece of paper is an article cut out of a newspaper. Luigi stares at the picture of him and Mario, which was taken after Luigi solved his first case, the Halloween murder. If only all his cases had gone so well, Luigi thinks, remembering the one he failed...
Luigi was inside an abandoned warehouse, wearing his detective outfit, a pink and purple Mushroomer girl standing at his side.
Luigi: Melody, are you sure you identified the correct person you saw do the shooting?
Melody: Yes, I'm sure.
Luigi: Hopefully, the killer got our message and will meet us here, not knowing we're the good guys. Good plan you had.
Melody: Thank you. I hope Mario doesn't forget about us. It's pretty cold outside and if he continues to hide out there, he might catch cold.
Luigi chuckled. Just then, a tall, buff, dark green Mushroom man wearing shades came through a broken down door. He stopped at the sight of Luigi and Melody, about ten feet from them. The Mushroomer lifted his shades to look at them.
Mushroomer: Yo, dawgs. I... uh, see yo're here already. Sorry for my bein' late.
Luigi: Oh, it's no trouble. No trouble at all.
Luigi leaned down towards Melody.
Luigi: (whispering) This the guy?
Melody: Yes...
Luigi stood straight again and took a few steps toward the Mushroom man, until he was about six feet from him. The Mushroomer looked Luigi over. The man was about Luigi's height.
Mushroomer: So... whazzup?
Luigi: Oh, you probably know. I hear there was a shooting at Mushroom-Mart. You hear about that?
The Mushroomer looked around in suspense.
Mushroomer: Um, yeah. Heard at least four people killed. Pretty bad.
Luigi: Anyone you know?
Mushroomer: ... Whatda'ya mean?
Luigi: Well, I heard that the person who did it looked like a punked-out guy.
Mushroomer: Oh, I get it. You callin' me punked? You callin' me punked, foo?!
Luigi: Now, now, calm down before someone gets hurt.
Mushroomer: Someone's already about to get hurt!
The Mushroomer man quickly pulled out a gun and shot a tiny bullet toward Luigi. Luigi leaped out of the way, landing on his belly. He then looked toward Melody. His heart sank as he saw Melody lieing on her back.
Luigi: No!!!
Luigi leaped toward the Mushroom man. The Mushroomer aimed his gun, but Luigi grabbed it and moved it out of the way, just as the gun went off. Luigi forced the man to the floor as Mario ran in. Mario grabbed a pair of handcuffs off his utility belt while running. He then ran over to the man, who was being held to the ground by Luigi, and quickly handcuffed him. Luigi then got the man to his feet, and Mario took the Mushroomer away. Luigi ran over to Melody and knelt beside her. She was breathing heavily.
Luigi: You okay?
Melody just stared at the ceiling for a second, then turned her head slowly to look at Luigi.
Luigi: C'mon, stay with us!
Melody: I... I can't thank you enough... for what you've done... to help me...
Luigi: ... No!
Melody let her head fall backwards. She died a second later. Luigi lookedaway, a tear falling from his left eye...
Luigi sighs again, as he tried to let the memory go. Meanwhile, Mario and Peach are still talking it all over. While Mario and Peach are talking about the incident, a pistol lowers through the window and a gunshot is heard. Mario and Peach rush in and see Luigi in a state of shock.
Later, Peach, E. Gadd, and Mario are standing on the balcony of Peach's Castle.
E. Gadd: Now this is strange. Why would someone try to kill Luigi?
Luigi: ...
Just then, from out of nowhere, a Boo with a detective hat floats in.
Mario: Woah! Who in the world are you?
Boo: I'm Detective Ghast. I'm a new detective in town, and I heard that someone tried to kill Luigi. I'm here to solve the mystery of this attempted murder.
Mario: That won't be necessary. Luigi has solved many cases.
Ghast: But you need professional help.
Mario: Luigi can take care of himself.
While Mario and Ghast start arguing, but are interrupted by Luigi, who is wearing his detective outfit.
Luigi: As much as I appreciate your help, I'm afraid I must solve this mystery myself.
Mario: I'm not leaving my brother in danger!
Luigi: Fine, you can help, Mario.
Ghast looks a little angry. Luigi, however,
doesn't realize how much danger he is in.
Act 2: The Start of a New Case
Mario and Ghast are seen investigating the window where the shooting occured. Luigi is going around Mushroom City, asking the local Mushroomers about some things. He is talking to a purple Mushroomer at the moment.
Luigi: I hope you don't mind me questioning you.
Mushroomer: No problem.
Luigi pulls out a notepad and a pencil.
Luigi: Now did you see anyone acting suspicious in any kind of way today or maybe yesterday?
Mushroomer: Not really.
Luigi puts the notepad and pencil back in his pocket.
Luigi: Okay. Thanks for your cooperation.
Mushroomer: You mean that's it?
Luigi: Yeah, why?
Mushroom: No reason.
Luigi then walks off, leaving the Mushroomer standing there in thought.
Mushroomer: Woah! That was the shortest questioning I've ever been in. Duuude!
Luigi makes his way to a road he needs to cross. He looks both ways. There seems to be no one coming, so he goes out into the street, heading for a building on the other side. When he gets to the middle of the road, however, a car all of a sudden zooms around the corner and starts heading toward Luigi. The noise of the tires skidding on the road causes Luigi to look. By then, the car is only feet from hitting him.
Luigi: Ahh!
The car is at full speed. Luigi quickly throws his arms out in front of him, in order to keep from getting seriously hurt. He knows he can't move far enough in time. Just then, as the car is now about to hit him, Mario dives at Luigi, pushing himself and Luigi out of the way. The car then goes on. Ghast floats over to Mario and Luigi, who are both now getting up off the ground.
Ghast: Pretty close call. You okay, Luigi?
Luigi: Yeah. Thanks, Mario.
Mario: Anything for my little bro. *grin*
Ghast: I think it's about time we turn in. It's getting pretty late. I'll head back to my place.
Mario: Okay. C'mon, Luigi.
Mario and Luigi then leave, heading to their house that was newly rebuilt from Bowser destroying it once. Meanwhile, Ghast goes inside a creepy house. A Boo comes up to him.
Boo: I thought you said you'd let me try to kill Luigi.
Ghast: I know what I said. You would've had your chance, if Mario and I hadn't been in the same area. I just let Mario rescue him so I wouldn't look so guilty.
Boo: Yeah, maybe. But you promise that I'll be able to kill Luigi next time?
Ghast: Sorry, but I'm gonna have to fire you.
Boo: What?!
Ghast: Listen, I can't have someone
try to kill Luigi every two minutes. Suppose they find out that you're
a Boo. That'll make me a suspect and they'll probably find out my little
secret! So I can't keep you working for
me.
Boo: Fine!
The Boo floats angrily past Ghast. He goes out the door and vanishes into the night fog.
Ghast: (talking to himself in thought) So long, Detective Luigi...
Ghast throws back his head and cackles loudly.
How will Detective Luigi find out Ghast's
little secret of attempting to kill him? Read on, and find out.
Act 3: A Fake Culprit
It has been one hour since Mario and Luigi woke up and went back into town, looking for clues. They have yet to discover who caused the near murder. Luigi is in in downtown Mushroom City, still with no important clues.
Luigi: *sigh* This has been going nowhere.
Luigi, thinking about the mystery, doesn't notice the dagger slipping out of a strange person's pocket until it's too late.
Luigi: Wha-
Luckily, the dagger slightly misses Luigi's trenchcoat, putting a small tear in it. The culprit runs from the scene, with Luigi giving chase. The figure starts slamming garbage cans for obstacles and throwing items at Luigi, but somehow Luigi dodges them all. The green plumber jumps up, landing on the suspect.
Koopa Culprit: Ugh...
Luigi: What do you think you were doing!?
Koopa: Um... You'll never foil my plans, Luigi! I'll get you someday!
Luigi notices a strange grin in the shadows.
Luigi: Hmm...
Back in the Mario Brothers' house, Mario and Ghast are arguing as usual.
Mario: Luigi didn't need any help at all!
Ghast: Yeah, right! Like, he didn't need any help from me, is what you're trying to say. Don't worry, Luigi, we got your culprit.
Luigi: Hmm... I'm not really sure about that.
Ghast: Wha? What are you talking about?
Luigi: There were no clues that he made the other two attempts.
Ghast: Impossible! I'm an expert at this stuff, and I know when I see a murderer!
Luigi: That doesn't mean that he did all of them. I think there must have been someone who used him to hide his tracks.
Ghast: *silent gulp* Don't think about stuff like that. It's getting late. Why don't you guys go get some sleep?
Luigi: I guess so.
As Luigi and soon Mario walk away, Ghast floats around, talking to himself.
Ghast: It's time I do this personally.
Ghast pulls a 9-inch knife out of his
outfit, and floats silently to Luigi's room...
Act 4: A Mysterious Shadow
Ghast waits outside the window, waiting
for Luigi to get in bed and fall asleep. After minutes of waiting unnoticed,
Ghast floats inside Luigi's room. Ghast goes to strike a sleeping Luigi
in the side. He lifts the
knife above Luigi's head, and starts
to quickly lower the knife. Before he can get within four feet of striking
Luigi, however, Ghast hears footsteps. The ghost quickly floats out the
window. He gets out just as Mario opens the door and walks in.
Mario: Luigi?
Luigi wakes up.
Luigi: Yeah?
Mario: We're supposed to go to Peach's Castle tonight and have dinner together, remember?
Luigi: Oh, yeah. I'll be right there.
Ghast, up against the wall next to Luigi's window, watches Luigi get out of bed, put his hat on, and close the door as he walks out. Ghast goes to float away so the Bros. won't see him, when his small cape attached to his small outfit catches on a drain pipe. Ghast sees it in time, and carefully and slowly takes it off, leaving nothing left for a clue. Ghast floats out of sight just as Mario and Luigi go out the door and toward Peach's Castle. Ghast floats back to his creepy house. Once he gets to his chamber, he pushes a button mounted on the wall. An orange-shelled Koopa Troopa then comes up behind him.
Koopa: Yes, Master Ghast?
Ghast: (talking slowly) Go to the Marios' house, and burn it down.
Koopa: Burn down their house?
Ghast: Yes. Get to it.
Koopa: Yes, Master Ghast...
Ghast gives a haunting, evil grin as
the orange-shelled Koopa Troopa walks out.
Act 5: An Arsonist
Later, after eating dinner and visiting with the the princesses, Luigi walks to the window to get a glimpse of the full moon. Before he gets a chance to see it, however, he notices a mysterious figure standing next to his house. Luigi squints his eyes to see better, and notices the figure is a Koopa Troopa. He also sees that the Koopa is holding a small tank of gasoline. The figure starts to pour gasoline all around the side of the house. Then, still watching the whole time, Luigi sees the Koopa strike a match and throw it in the gasoline. The side of the house is quickly filled with flames. At the sight of this, Luigi quickly turns to Mario.
Luigi: Mario! We need to get to the house, someone just set it on fire!
Mario quickly rushes out of the castle along with Luigi. Peach and Daisy rush to the window and watch. The Koopa runs from the act just as Mario and Luigi arrive.
Luigi: But what about him?
Mario: Let him go! We'll get him later.
Luigi then rushes to the hose. He turns
it on and starts to spray the house. After Mario and Luigi get the fire
out and turn the hose off, they hear a gunshot. The Bros. look toward the
castle, and see Ghast with a gun
in his hand, and the orange-shelled
Koopa laying on the ground in front of him. Luigi tosses the hose back
where it was, and he and Mario run to Ghast.
Mario: You floating idiot! You could've just taken him to the police!
Ghast: That's what I planned on doing, but when he saw me, he pulled out a laser gun. I had no choice but to fire my gun.
The Bros. look at the Koopa's body.
There's a black laser gun in his hand. Luigi then looks to Peach and Daisy,
who are still in the window.
Act 6: Luigi's Suspicion
Luigi and Mario are now doing an autopsy on the Koopa's body, which is lieing on a table.
Mario: Well, it seems Ghast was telling the truth. We saw a laser gun in the Koopa's hand, so I guess it was actually self-defense, like Ghast said.
Luigi: But there's just something haunting me, almost like... someone's setting us up, waiting to strike. There's just something that's totally wrong.
Mario: Hmm.
Luigi: ... Mario, remember how the Koopa was lieing on the ground in front of Ghast, with a gun in his hand?
Mario: Yeah, it happened five hours ago.
Luigi: Well the Koopa was holding the laser gun in his hand, although he was dead.
Mario: So?
Luigi: Normally, whenever a person dies with something in their hand, they're in so much pain that they feel as though they don't have enough strength to keep on holding it. Know what I mean?
Mario: ... Yeah... So that means that the Koopa would've dropped the gun, instead of keeping it in his hand.
Luigi: Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
Mario nods.
Act 7: The Mystery Unfolds
It is now late at night. The floating murderer is sneaking to his hideout.
Ghast: That Luigi's really starting to annoy me.
Ghast looks around for danger and floats through the wall.
Ghast: Don't worry, I'll keep you safe for all eternity...
???: Oh, Ghast...
Ghast: I need to get something, okay?
Ghast floats into his room and grabs an axe.
Ghast: So, you've been spying on me the whole time.
Someone then comes out of the shadows.
Luigi: You're a pretty good actor, Ghast.
Ghast: Heh, well too bad I have to kill you.
He holds the axe high.
Ghast: For Melody!
Act 8: Ghast vs Luigi
Immediatly, Ghast starts swiping his axe, trying to hit Luigi. Luckily, Luigi dodges the first strike, but is injured by the second.
Luigi: Ow...
Ghast Tired already? Aww, c'mon! I was just having fun! *evil laugh*
Luigi Grr!
Luigi runs out into the hall. Ghast
chases him. Luigi takes a turn to his right, which takes him in a dark
room. Luigi feels around in order to find his way. Luigi runs into a wall
and then decides to move around some
more, looking for the door. Luigi makes
it to the middle of the room and stops to catch his breath. However, sneaking
around in the shadows is Ghast. Ghast, unnoticed, floats closer behind
Luigi, lifts his axe above his head, and starts to swing. Thankfully, Luigi
hears a little noise from Ghast. He looks behind him just at the right
time. Ghast swings his axe with all his might. Luigi leaps out of the way,
just in time. Ghast hits the
floor so hard that whe can't pull the
axe back out of the floor. Instead, he then decides to float through the
walls again. Luigi runs out of the room and meets Ghast in the hall.
Ghast: Getting scared of the dark?
Luigi: Grrrah!
Luigi slams Ghast into the wall, not knowing it was breakable. They go right through it and end up on the side of the wall outside.
Luigi: NO!!!
Ghast: Too bad you're not a ghost!
Luigi grabs a rope from his pocket and uses it to grab on to a window.
Luigi: (to himself) Dang, I was gonna use that to capture Ghast.
Luigi pulls himself inside and notices an item.
Luigi: Huh?
Meanwhile, a triumphant Ghast is floating through the hall.
Ghast: So, Luigi is finally killed. I can't wait to tell her...
Then, someone holds up a familiar vacuum and presses the ON button.
Ghast: Wha- Nooooooooooo!
Luigi: And that's a wrap.
Act 9: Melody
Later, Luigi is walking down the streets of Mushroom City with Mario at his side.
Mario: Uh, sorry I couldn't help you out with Ghast. I knew he wasn't to be trusted!
Luigi: Yeah, well you had to do something important, right?
Mario: Um... right.
As the Brothers continue walking down the street, a pink Boo appears in front of them.
Mario: Ahh! Oh, it's another Boo.
Pink Boo: P-please free Ghast.
Luigi: And what relationship do you have with him?
Pink Boo: *tear* I'm his girlfriend.
Mario: (Oh no, this is the sad part of the soap opera...)
Luigi: Well, he attempted murder several times and-
Pink Boo: I told him to do it!
Luigi: Wha?!
Pink Boo: My name is Melody, *sniff* and I'm the girl Mushroomer who died in your last case.
Mario: Impossible!
Luigi: You're that girl...
Melody: Yes. I told Ghast to kill you. I-I just couldn't believe that I died. I was so angry, I wanted to kill someone. It's not his fault.
Luigi: ... He has to go.
Melody: *sniff* I understand.
Act 10: A Revealing Day
After all that had happened a couple days back, Luigi and Mario decided to start a party, celebrating the capture of Ghast, who is now in the Mushroom Kingdom Prison. However, Luigi seems a bit confused and troubled. Mario comes in his room after a while.
Mario: What's wrong, Luigi?
Luigi: I dunno... I'm just puzzled. I'm not sure what to do. Melody wanted me dead, but Ghast was the one who did it for her... I'm not sure if I'm supposed to send her to prison along with Ghast or just let her go.
Mario: That's a tough decision. But I think you ought to let her go.
Luigi: Why?
Mario: Well, maybe she told Ghast she wanted just a random person dead. And he ended up picking you.
Luigi: Yeah, but to me it seems that no matter what, she still would have been responsible, along with Ghast, for the murder. I just don't know what to do.
Mario: I have an idea...
Later...
Luigi is talking to Melody on a sidewalk in Mushroom City.
Luigi: I know you might think I'm angry, but... I'm not. I understand how you would've felt after you died.
Melody: *nods slowly* I'm sorry about Ghast trying to kill you.
Luigi: Why did you do it?
Melody: Well, like I said a day ago, I was so angry that someone had killed me. I just wanted to kill somebody... but I wasn't using my head and didn't realize what I was doing until I heard Ghast was going to kill you.
Luigi: Well, why did you pick me?
Melody: Actually, picking you was an accident. What I did was let Ghast write some people's names from Mushroom City and then put their names in a hat. Ghast shook the hat up and reached in, picking up a tag with your name on it. Ghast told me it was you. When I realized that, I told him to reconsider and that I had changed my mind. But Ghast wouldn't listen. He insisted on doing it all for my sake. *sniff* He was a good guy. He had a good heart... *tear* If you knew him, you would agree with me. He'd do anything for anyone.
Luigi hangs his head and looks down at his shoes. Then he looks back up at Melody.
Luigi: (not really knowing what to say) ... I-I'm sorry...
Melody: I understand.
Luigi: But he did murder one of his
helpers. I'm really sorry, but we have to keep him in jail...
Act 11: Flashbacks
Later that day, Luigi goes into his room and lies down on his bed, thinking and staring at the ceiling.
Luigi: God, help me... Give me some answer...
Just then, with a flash of light, everything goes black for Luigi. Luigi, seemingly hypnotized, leans up and sits on the side of his bed. A flashback then appears right in front of him. Luigi sees everything that happened one day during spring...
He and Mario had been saving the Mushroom Kingdom from one of Bowser's horrible attacks. Mario had defeated the Koopalings and Bowser was heading toward Luigi, who was standing in front of Peach's Castle. Bowser blasted a laser ball toward Luigi. Luigi ran out of the way, hoping the ball would hit the ground. But when Luigi started to run a little more, he realized that the laser ball was homing in on him. No matter where Luigi ran, the laser ball was right behind him, getting closer by the second. Then, after running for a couple minutes, Luigi made a high and long jump over a hole in the ground created by Bowser. Everything went into slow motion as Luigi flew through the air. The laser ball was inches behind him. Then when Luigi was almost to the other side of the large hole, the laser ball, at full speed, hit Luigi, throwing him to the side of the hole. Luigi landed on the ground with burn marks all over him and bolts of electricity around his body. Luigi was in so much pain he couldn't get to his feet.
Bowser: (in the most hideous tone ever) Mwahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!
Mario: Luigi!!
Mario started to run toward Luigi when he was hit by a glob of goop by Bowser Jr.
Junior: HA!
Bowser then used another laser ball to hit Mario and Luigi's old house, near Peach's Castle. The ball hit it, causing large chunks of the house to blast into the air. One large part flew right above Luigi. Luigi knew he was about to be crushed, but couldn't move in time. He raised his arm as a shield, all the while knowing it was helpless. Then, just as the wood was feet from Luigi, a Boo, coming out of nowhere, floated over faster that a bullet and got under the large part of the house. The Boo stopped the wood while still in the air. Luigi lowered his arm and saw the Boo throwing the wood out of the way. Bowser growled and blasted another laser ball at the Boo. The Boo allows the laser ball to go right through him, causing the ball to rebound back toward Bowser.
Bowser: NO!
Junior: *growl*
The laser ball headed right toward Bowser's doomship. The ball sliced the doomship right in half. However, the rockets were still activated. Bowser then used the rockets to blast away toward Kastle Koopa. Mario got his feet, brushing off the last bit of goop on his arm, and ran to Luigi, who was already being helped to his feet by the Boo.
Mario: Luigi, are you okay?
Luigi: Yeah, I'm okay... thanks to this boo. (to the Boo) You saved my life. Thanks...
Boo: Just remember, always watch where you fall. *chuckle*
Mario: Well, it looks as though we're gonna have to rebuild our house.
Luigi looked toward Mario. When he looked back, the Boo was nowhere in sight...
It's all clear now. Luigi just remembers
that a Boo saved his life. Then, Luigi remembers the Boo's voice. Luigi
is shocked. The Boo's voice is identical to Ghast's. Ghast saved Luigi's
life. Coming out of the flashack, Luigi finds himself back in his room.
Luigi leaps out of bed and heads for the kitchen.
Act 12: A Day for Xelebration
Luigi is seen sitting at the table. Mario is seated across from Luigi.
Luigi: Mario, I just remembered something. Remember about two years ago when Bowser attacked Peach's Castle? And when that one boo saved me from being crushed?
Mario: Yeah.
Luigi: Well, I just realized that the Boo's voice was identical to Ghast's voice. Ghast saved my life...
Mario: But... that doesn't make sense. Why would he save you and then, two years later, try to kill you?
Luigi: Well, earlier, I talked to Melody, like you suggested, and I asked her why she picked me to be killed by Ghast. She said that picking me was actually accidental. She went on to say that once she found out that I was picked, she changed her mind and didn't want to kill anyone. But she said that Ghast wouldn't listen and wanted to do anything for her.
Mario: So?
Luigi: So that explains it. "Ghast would do anything for anyone," Melody said. He just wanted to help cheer Melody up. He wanted to do anything for her. Get me now?
Mario: Yeah, sorta.
Luigi: Follow me.
The Brothers head out to Mushroom City. Later, they are seen talking with Melody.
Luigi: ...So, that's how I found all this out.
Melody: *nods* I understand know. But I also understand that you have to keep him in prison.
Luigi pauses a minute.
Luigi: Tell you what, since we know that Ghast was a good guy but tried to kill me because he wanted to see you happy again, we're gonna let him go, instead of giving him a life sentence.
Melody: Seriously?
Luigi: Yep. *grin*
Melody: Oh, thank you! Thank you so much!
Later, Mario, Luigi, and Melody are outside Ghast's cell in the Mushroom City jail. Luigi grabs a key off the wall and opens the cell door.
Luigi: C'mon, Ghast.
Ghast floats slowly out the door. He
looks over towards Luigi before getting a
chance to see Melody. Ghast looks at
Luigi, trying to hold his anger. He starts to float with slight anger toward
Luigi, when Melody floats over to Ghast.
Ghast: (surprised) Melody...
Melody: Don't worry... I'm all right. I told Detective Luigi everything.
Ghast: But-
Melody: Please, Ghast. I want you to stop trying to kill Luigi.
Ghast: But... you said you-
Melody: I know what I said. And I was a fool to want to kill someone in my anger. Please reconsider, and give up trying. Luigi set you free, so the least you could do is thank him and forgive him...
Ghast looks down to the ground in thought. Ghast then, taking a while to do so, looks back up at Melody. She smiles at him. He gives her a half grin, then he turns to Luigi. Luigi has his hands in his pockets. Ghast looks at Luigi for a second before giving a short "thank you" nod. Luigi nods back with a grin. Ghast then looks back at Melody. Mario chuckles silently and puts his hand on Luigi's shoulder.
Mario: Goob job, Detective Luigi.
Later that day, everyone that Mario and Luigi invited over for a party arrives. Peach, Daisy, Yoshi, Birdo, Toad, Toadette, DK, and Diddy Kong are all glad to find out that Luigi has solved yet another mystery.
