Chapter 4: Moonlight Mist

Shinsoh was lying in his bed, resting quietly. It was about three-o-clock in the morning and everything was very quiet. Suddenly Shinsoh sat upright.

"This is so tiring waiting for everyone to wake up and start the day all over again," Shinsoh said to himself with a sigh.

Suddenly, he heard a sound. The sound seemed very familiar. Shinsoh rolled his eyes and walked slowly to the door and opened it. Nothing appeared to be there. and yet something could be felt. Shinsoh saw a shadow. Shinsoh knew that shadows were made only by living things. If a shadow was in the cold air of the castle, something had to be alive and breathing the cold night air.

Shinsoh took his cape and put it on. It blew in the light breeze, cooling his face. The air, to most creatures, would be cold. For Shinsoh, who was warm-blooded, the cold air hit his face but he wouldn't shiver, not even once. When Shinsoh stared into the hall everything was different than it was in his room. His room seemed dark and lifeless. But when he looked into the long dark hallway... Shinsoh shivered, not from the cold, but from all the darkness around him. In the day everything was light and free. But at night... Now that was a different story. It seemed like something was hunting him or the castle was on lockdown and he was left inside. His eyes made the hall a bit brighter, just enough to see in the dark hallway.

Shinsoh began to walk down the hall, walking past many Koopatrols. None of them stopped him, he just walked right past them. It was as if they were blinded by the darkness that circled them like sparklers. Soon enough Shinsoh walked into the dungeon. Ludwig and Karma were asleep on the floor. Shinsoh crept over to the jail cell and sat there. He saw Ludwig lying on Karma's lap. Shinsoh sat there, wondering what it felt like to be loved. He wondered if it felt warm, or cold. Did it make you scared? This would be something Shinsoh would never know... Or would he? He had never felt love for someone... not even as a kid. Shinsoh remembered how as a child love was something important. But not now, at least not to him.

"Shinsoh! I don't want it later!" said a small girl's voice.

"No, not right now, Nockey!" A younger Shinsoh sat in the corner of a room with a yellow Yoshi with reddish brown hair and orange dragon wings. She sat on a bed with her eyes closed tight as she kicked at the bed impatiently.

"Oh come on, Shinsoh! If it's that important then show it to me now!" the Yoshi girl said with anger.

"Nockey, be still, I'll finish! Just give me a second," the younger Shinsoh said. He held a book in his hand, it seemed to be a small diary. Shinsoh held the book close to her face.

"Ok, open it now!' Shinsoh pushed the diary into her hands.

The Yoshi girl gasped. "Oh Shinsoh, it's beautiful! It's what I always wanted!" The Yoshi girl grabbed it from his hands. "I can't wait to write in it, Shinsoh. I wish I had something for you... oh! Wait right here." Nockey ran out of the room.

The younger Shinsoh sat at the window, looking at all the snow on the ground. It was Christmas and Shinsoh's parents said they would be there. Shinsoh's eyes looked dark and dreary as he turned his head to watch the girl run back into the room.

"Ok, Shinsoh, close you eyes," she said with excitement.

Shinsoh closed his eyes.

"Now open them!" Nockey was holding two red bracelets.

"Oh Nockey... Really-" Shinsoh's eyes looked at the girl in pain.

"No, really, take them! They match your eyes and Mom says that's when they look the most beautiful!" said Nockey.

Nockey was about the age of three and Shinsoh was five.

"Thank you, Nockey. You don't know how much this means to me," replied Shinsoh with gratitude.

The girl smiled.

Shinsoh stopped thinking right there. He didn't want to remember any of his young life. It was behind him, wasn't it? He looked around the jail cell that Karma and Ludwig slept in. From the corner of his eye he saw something shine, but he glanced past it. Then he turned his head back towards it... it glittered and shone so bright. Shinsoh had to close his eyes. Shinsoh reached through the bars and grabbed the shining object. Looking at it closely he could see it was in the shape of a key. Shinsoh walked to the door into the hallway. Before he opened the door, he looked to Karma and Ludwig and smiled. Yes, he had felt love, but now to him, love and hate were the same thing.

Karma tossed and turned in her sleep. Her eyes closed tightly and she thrashed her hand out in the air. In her dream Ludwig was motionless on the ground and Karma held his hand, crying. She dreamt that she had put her head on his chest. Karma could see around her. She noticed that Shinsoh held a tight grip on a sword, and was running straight at a Koopa with red messy hair and a scar over his right eye. Over to one side was Shanelle, who was throwing a teenage Yoshi, with green fur and a shy guy mask, onto the ground. A Yoshi girl with light yellow fur and orange dragon wings stood back to back with a gold-haired girl that wore a blue dress and an emerald necklace. The Yoshi girl shot arrows at some of Shanelle's guards and the gold-haired girl sat wide-eyed. A black-haired Koopa with red bangs kicked at some of the guards. Her hands where tied behind her back and she had tape over her mouth. The black-haired girl got hit with the green Yoshi as he was flown through the air. The green Yoshi sat on top of the Koopa, motionless, and she tried to push him off.

The Yoshi girl turned around to help the others, and got shot in the arm with an arrow. She fell to her knees and grabbed her arm. Shanelle walked over to the Yoshi girl and took her by the arm. Her fingers somehow went right through her skin. The Yoshi girl screamed.

Karma quickly awoke and wiped the sweat from her face. She sighed as she leaned back on the wall. "It was just a dream," Karma said as she whiped tears from her eyes. "But it felt so real.." Karma slid down the wall. Her eyes stung like she had been crying for a very long time. Karma closed her eyes. It just seemed so real, like it had happened but then time had rewound. She rubbed her eyes and drifted to sleep.
