Dreams Can Be Reality

By Teela Yoshi

Thunder boomed through the night sky as the moonlight barely made it through the dirty windows of Kastle Koopa; they obviously haven't been tended to in a long time. Karma Koopa stood in front of one, wanting to punch it for being so dirty, though she didn't understand why she'd been so angry lately. Every chance she'd been given, she'd been fighting with Ludwig and grouching off at his siblings, and she wasn't being a very pleasant... creature... to be around. But it was their fault she was trapped here.

Karma sighed... knowing she had seen brighter times in her life. She didn't want to be alive anymore, didn't want her life... She thought and wondered... how it could get worse. To be trapped, in a way, at Kastle Koopa, to be imprisoned, not even in control of your own life... that wasn't any life at all. Karma longed for someone who could be there for her, someone to talk to when she was lonely... someone who actually cared about her and what happened to her. Karma grunted, heading off to her room, ready to throw the family cat out the window if it gave her any backtalk about her owning the room.

I want a different life. Either that, or... someone... who could make it better. I want a way out of my reality... I want... a... friend, yes, a friend to share my thoughts with, someone who would be my friend forever, someone who would care about me, someone... who would be kind, caring, and also wants... only a friend in the world. Someone... like me, I guess...

Karma thought some more, about how she'd meet her friend... what they would be like... She hoped someday she'd meet someone that matched her hopes, someone who would care for her, like her for who she is, and not be hateful to her every chance they'd get. Karma wanted... a friend, something she really never had...

To wonder what it's like to have a friend... sounds crazy to some people... It would... I wish... I had a friend. Someone who would care! Someone who would accept me... Someone... anyone... who would be kind to me, treat me as I deserve to be treated, treat me as an equal... Not like I'm an outsider, different... someone... who would... be my friend. A true friend. I want... a true friend. I wish... I had a true friend.

Karma then stopped, realizing she'd come to her door. This was her horrible reality, something she couldn't change. Sometimes, she wished her dreams were her reality; she didn't want to be at Kastle Koopa. She wanted to be in a field of flowers, tulips preferably, and with a lot of butterflies, and even possibly, with a few friends with butterfly nets. She knew... they'd never hurt the butterflies... Karma believed it was a silly thought, but it was at least peaceful... But something... she figured... she'd never have.

Karma lay in her bed, the cat gone - thankfully she hadn't had to put up with it - and thought of everything... how bad it was... She drifted off to sleep, the sweet, mellow melody of longing in her mind...

_

" KARMA!! GET UP! COME ON... Don't leave me like this..." An urging, yet still gentle voice called as Karma opened her eyes, wondering who on Plit was in her room, as she didn't recognize the voice. She stared into two green eyes. Behind them was a blurry figure, sort of light bluish... Karma saw as she sat up... the image suddenly fading.

_

" Hey!" Karma sat up in the dark... seeing... a cat in front of her. It walked all over the bed as she pushed it off, not even wanting to turn on the pet translator. She didn't care what this mean thing had to say. Nothing nice, that was for sure, Karma knew.

Karma got up and picked the cat up with one claw, holding it away form herself, trying not to get scratched. She opened her door and placed it outside, walking to her window and shutting it, making sure there was no way that pesky creature would wake her up again.

"You're not getting back in here..." And with that, Karma grunted as she got in her bed and pulled the covers over herself tiredsomely. She drifted... drifted away as her eyes shut.

_

"Catch!" The figure again... Something threw her a butterfly net... Karma couldn't see, it was so blurry, and the sun was so shiny, so bright, that the figure was even more blurred. She couldn't see who or what it was... It had a big nose... two green eyes... but that was all Karma could see. "Come on, Karma! Have some fun!"

"Where's Ludwig?" Karma asked as she looked around. There were flowers forever, as far as the eye could see, and the sun was bright, so sunny, and it stretched over the horizon, seeming as if the entire ground had been set ablaze. The wind whispered gentle tunes in the air, carrying a sweet melody that made everyone want to have a little fun and chase after it.

"Hm? Who's Ludwig, Karma?" the figure asked curiously. Karma knew she - it was a she, the voice was obvious - was smiling, a bright and pretty smile that made Karma want to smile. "Don't worry. If you have to leave, I won't be upset, don't worry! Do you... want to leave?" The figure's smile wasn't as bright, Karma could tell... blurry slightly... but she was still happy, somehow.

"Uh... no... I'm not leaving. I could stay. What are you doing?" Karma asked as the figure nodded her head towards butterflies that hovered over the flowers, moving up and down as if waiting, saying, "Catch me, if you can, that is!!!" Karma glanced at the net in her hands.

"I thought you said to meet you here today? Wow, what next, you forget your own name?" The figure giggled kindly as Karma watched her run towards the butterflies. Karma then decided to go ahead and do that too. Besides, what could be the harm?

After a while, the figure stopped as she held her net facing the ground.

"Now, I'm going to see which butterflies will make it out on their own," the figure spoke as Karma stopped from running around. Karma thought for a moment, figuring that'd be interesting.

"What are you going to do with the ones that don't make it out?" Karma really didn't know what answer to expect, and she didn't even know the figure's name.

"Let them go so they can fly freely, together, like friends should." The figure smiled as she held up her hand, waiting for Karma to give her a high-paw-claw. The figure had a paw... Karma felt it was soft, warm, and gentle as she high fived, or rather, high foured the creature. Karma didn't even know who it was, but she acted as if she'd known Karma all her life. The figure then turned, staring at the sun, watching it glisten. The figure was still not too clear to Karma.

"Aw, Karma, the butterflies say the sun will start to be going down soon," the creature spoke. Karma had a puzzled look on her face.

"Say?" Karma asked as the figure turned back towards her, smiling a little tiredsomely.

"Hm, what? Yeah, they said the sun would be going down soon. Don't you have to get home?" And with that, Karma remembered she would.

"Oh... your parents need you?" Karma asked as the figure looked to the sky.

"Dunno, Karma." The figure looked to the ground as the sun started to go farther down, the moon starting to become visible. "I just know you've got to go soon."

"You don't know, huh? Whatdya mean?" The figure shrugged and smiled again.

"It's getting late, isn't it? You've got somewhere to be." Karma thought a little more.

"Don't you?" she asked curiously as the figure looked at her with a little tinge of sorrow, though she could see the figure smile weakly.

"No." The figure stopped as Karma started to watch her fade.

"HEY! WHERE ARE YOU GOING?! I DON'T EVEN KNOW YOUR NAME!" Karma yelled as the sky suddenly darkened a little more and the figure faded a little more.

"Karma, go, now. I've got to go, and so do you. Goodbye!"

"But will I ever see you again?" Karma asked. The figure shrugged. "What's your name?"

"Te-" Before she could finish, a lightning bolt hit the ground, Karma screaming as the figure got hit. The figure fell as Karma shrieked.

"KARMA! SSSSSTTTTTTOooooooppppp ITTTtttttttt!!!" A dark voice was heard as Karma looked from left to right in fear, her heart pounding, a scream echoing through the flowers that suddenly wilted into a field of dead flowers.

The voice wasn't from the figure, who had been swept away when Karma had screamed. It was.... everywhere. She looked back to hopefully see the figure she had been with... but there was nothing but sparks flying, a blood red sky, and lightning in the clouds that were blackened even more than they were when there was a huge storm. Everything... seemed evil, forlorn, and like a horrid.... nightmare!

Karma turned to run... runnning away... she kept running. "YOU CAN RUN ALLL YYYOOOUUU Wwaaannnnt..." And that was the last thing she heard as she faded quickly too...

_

Karma sat up abruptly, looking around her room as she got up and flipped a switch. The light came on; though it was dim, it was still enough to light up the room. The sun was rising, the morning twilight having a dimmed orange twist to it. Karma knew that if she weren't in Dark Land at the time, she'd be able to see it. It would be bright and blazing, stretching over the horizon. Maybe, Karma pictured, that girl is looking at it too.

Karma leaned against her wall, looking down at the pencil and papers on her desk. She then sat down and began to draw... a blurred figure with a big nose, and Karma imagined long hair for the figure, as it seemed to fit her eyes. She sketched it lightly, knowing she'd go back in and color the eyes later. She just started to sketch the rest of it, imagining it, giving it a little more shape. In the end... it looked pretty much just like the figure she had seen. Karma stared at it a little more as she realized... it sort of looked like a Yoshi... had some of the features. Karma then looked at it... could be a Birdo, but the eyes were kind of too big and so was the nose, plus, Karma thought, the girl's nose was round, like her own. In the end, Karma definately decided... it was a Yoshi.

Above the figure in the picture, Karma wrote two letters: "TE", and that was it. Karma remembered how the figure had disappeared... She had screamed, Karma had seen it, but there was no noise. Just... light... and that dark voice's words was all Karma had heard.

"Why couldn't I... Why couldn't I have saved her?" Karma asked no one as she pulled out another piece of paper from the pile and decided she'd do a solid picture of the figure, not just a sketch. She'd only colored parts of it, and gave it a Yoshi figure. Karma was curious, and wondered who the figure was. She sat there for at least five minutes, erasing here and there, and finally finished it. Karma then smiled, feeling satisfied, though she hadn't colored the whole thing. "I wonder if I'll ever meet her again..."

Karma hung the picture up on her wall, knowing it was a nice picture; she hung it up high so the cat couldn't get to it. She stared at it a few more moments before returning to her bed, somewhat hesitant to return to sleep. What if she dreamt that again? What if she saw that Yoshi girl get her head torn off? What if she saw herself getting shot at? Karma shuddered... But then an image of the Yoshi girl's smiling face persisted through her head. It seemed to make her troubles die.

"I wish I knew someone like her," Karma muttered, figuring that was just a dream. The Yoshi girl was, Karma then decided, and so was the voice: just a dream. Just figures of her imagination... seemingly the only friends she had. Karma drifted back off to sleep, leaving all her thoughts to sort themselves...

The day would wander on, dragging Karma with it. Who should say that the mind, or should one say the imagination, wasn't created to ease the lonliness that the soul goes through? When two are separated, friends, parents, whoever the two shall be, it seems that every time one turns the corner, they see that person. That person enters the other's dreams. When one is that lonely, it seems that the imagination is born, or gets more power; it takes hold and eases the pain, it always finds a way. And sooner or later... they say that everything takes a turn for the better. It seems that the pain, sooner or later, becomes happiness. It will transform, but it takes time...

When told "Time Heals All", who can say that statement wasn't born out of loneliness? Wonderful things are born from loneliness, lessons of life, and it makes people appreciate things more when they are lonely and have been separated from what they so dearly care for. The phrase "You don't know what you've got until it's gone" is so very true.

The imagination is a dream, a wonderful dream, that could have been made to ease the loneliness of reality. But sooner or later, dreams can be... our reality...

The End
