The Koopalings in Super Mario World

By Mary Beyer

It had been a few years since the Koopas had tried to take over the Mushroom Kingdom. One day all the Koopalings were gathering outside Bowser’s throne room. Then they all ran in and started complaining about having nothing to do. They had been standing outside the throne room for an hour, planning only the best ways to get their dad to let them do something.

“Hey, King Dad!” they all cried as one. “Give us all another shot at beating Mario!”

“Fine. Okay, okay, okay. Hey wait… STOP TALKING!” Bowser yelled. All of the Koopalings clammed up.

“We’ll take over Dinosaur Land this time. Now, Kooky? You know those Yoshis?” Kooky nodded. “Fine. Build a machine that will trap them in eggs. Give me ‘til tomorrow to give you each a world in which to build your own castle and conquer.” All the Koopalings walked out of the room. They all went to bed trying to guess which world they would have.

That morning…

“Okay, WAKE UP!” Bowser yelled. Soon they were all lined up at the door. “Hop has Yoshi's Island, Big Mouth has Donut Plains, Hip has Vanilla Dome, Kooky has the Twin Bridges, Bully has the Forest of Illusions, Kootie Pie has Chocolate Island, and Cheatsy is in the Valley of Bowser with me.”

“Yaaaaaaayyyyyy!” the Koopalings cheered as they went through pipe lines to their worlds. They all had an easy time conquering the worlds, since no one was prepared for them.

It wasn’t long before Mario and Luigi had heard about the Yoshis and Dinosaur Land. They ventured towards Yoshi’s house. After rescuing Yoshi, they pushed the yellow switch in the Yellow Switch Palace. Mario and Luigi jumped on sinking rafts in one level, and in another, they traveled through the mountains. Mario almost fell but he landed on a lot of yellow blocks. Then they reached Hop’s castle. As Mario jumped on to a screen, Luigi knocked off Koopa Troopas. Having defeated all the Troopas, they fell onto a floating island in the middle of a lava sea.

“Hop,” Mario said, “you’re fired!”

“Ha!” Hop said. “I’ll show YOU who’s fired!” Mario, Luigi and Hop battled on the island. Luigi pushed Hop off, but he made a warp pipe back to Bowser’s Castle right before he hit the lava. The plumbers didn’t see him warp. They rescued the captured-in-an-egg Yoshi and presumed Hop defeated. They ran towards Donut Plains.

The first level was really easy, but when the Brothers went to an underground cave, they discovered that the walls moved. Luigi almost fell into a deep hole, but Mario grabbed him. Mario and Luigi had a really hard time going through the Donut Ghost House. Little white ghosts made faces at them if they stared at the ghosts for 30 seconds. Then when Mario used a cape, he flew up and onto a ledge that led to another exit. Luigi followed. The exit led to a very secret grove filled with Mushrooms, Fire Flowers, Feathers, and Yoshi! Also, after another ghost house, was a peculiar star. Mario and Luigi jumped on it and were warped to the magical place of Star Road, later to play an important role in Legend of the Seven Stars. The Bros. discovered that the Star Road led to many other places like Vanilla Dome, the Forest of Illusions, the middle of a sea, and the Valley of Bowser, but they were all blocked off by the Koopalings. Mario and Luigi decided to come back to the Star Road later. They warped back to Donut Plains, but not before rescuing a blue Yoshi. They easily got through the remaining two levels with the Yoshi’s help. As they reached Big Mouth’s castle, the Yoshi said that he would wait for them at the opposite end of the castle. After hopping through Thwomps and Dry Bones and barely escaping through smashing walls, they came to Big Mouth.

“Hahaha!” Big Mouth laughed. “This time it’s curtains for you creeps, you’ve had it, you’re history, it’s allllll over, revenge is mine, the fat lady has sung, so, the Super Mario Brothers are no more!!!”

“ENOUGH ALREADY!!!” Mario and Luigi yelled together. Then Big Mouth ran up the wall and planned to fall on them and smash them, but the Bros. jumped on him three times and he was history, or so they thought. He transported back to the Keep. They rescued another Yoshi in an egg and moved towards Vanilla Dome.

As the Bros. walked into the first stage, bats called Swoopers flew at them. There were two exits to this one. One exit, they discovered, led to the Star Road, two more levels, and a fortress with Reznor in it. This path led on towards the Butter Bridge area. Luigi went this way and Mario stayed in the Dome. He worked his way through treacherous lakes in which Cheep Cheeps swam up and down, blocking his path, a haunted ghost house, a deep underground cavern with lots of Blarggs, and finally Hip’s castle. Magikoopas flew around and zapped transforming magic at Mario but after a while, he reached Hip.

“Oh, so the little plumber is here!” Hip said mockingly. “How ‘bout cleaning these pipes?” He disappeared into a large orange pipe.

“I’d clean a Koopa’s pipes any day!” Mario shouted back. Then he saw Hip coming back up.

“HEEE-YAAHH!” Mario yelled, and stomped on him. Then he heard Hip laughing.

“Ha! So the dummy bags one of my dummies!” Hip said.

“Whaa?” Mario looked down. It was a dummy remarkably similar to Hip. This took a while, but Mario got the hang of it and sent Hip into a warp pipe he had created over the lava just in case. Mario ran to catch up with Luigi.

Luigi had found his way through the two Butter bridges and to Kooky’s castle. He waited at the entrance for Mario. From inside, Kooky was watching him from a monitor.

“Let both of them in?” he asked no one. “Not likely.” He pushed a button and Luigi fell in a trap door. He ended up in Kooky’s battle room.

“Aww! So weak without Mario?” Kookie teased.

“No!” Luigi said quickly. “Gimme your best shot!”

“You asked for it,” Kooky said.

Outside, Mario was running frantically through the Cheese Bridge area, not stopping to look at Soda Lake. He scrambled through Cookie Mountain and ran to Kooky’s castle. He zoomed through the corridors and made it to the battle room doors, but they were locked.

Inside, Kooky was rolling back and forth in his shell,  jumping out only to spit fireballs at Luigi. Luigi stomped him three times and he followed the same escape routine as Big Mouth. Luigi walked out of the battle room and saw Mario sitting down.

“Hey, bro, I found another Yoshi. Let’s go!” Luigi said.

“That makes four. I think the Forest of Illusion is next. Wonder who we have to battle this time?” Mario said.

In the Forest of Illusion, there was a Blue Switch Palace, a ghost house, and a Star Road beyond the fortress, and at the end of it all, Bully’s castle. They rode though it, on moving blocks. Then they came to a new enemy, a silver Bowser statue. It sat there and spit fireballs. Mario and Luigi easily dodged it. Then they got to Bully’s room. His game plan was the same as Big Mouth’s, except every time he ran over the walls and fell, they would close in. Mario and Luigi jumped on him one, two, three, and he was done. He warped back to the Keep like the others before him.

“Chocolate Island is next I think. Yoshi showed us those maps,” Luigi remembered.

He was right. As they hopped through Chocolate Island, they came to a ghost house. It was really nothing special. Then after two more levels, they came to a fortress. This fortress had big blocks of wood that would crash on you if you came at the wrong time. As always, Reznor was the master of the fortress. After the fortress, Mario and Luigi traveled underground. Sliding islands in the sky inhabited this cavern. Then they went to a level where there was so many coins that the Bros. could get three 1-Ups. There was a secret level too. There the Bros. got a little taste of the Valley of Bowser.

Then they found Kootie Pie’s castle. She had the same plan as Hip did. She was not happy to find he used this method too.

“IT WAS MY IDEA! MINE! MINE! MINE! MINE! MINE! THAT LITTLE… OOOHH!” Kootie Pie yelled. Mario stomped on her three times and she disappeared yelling into a warp pipe.

“Mario, we got nowhere to go! This was the last place on la…” Luigi said, staring at the waters of the sea. A ship had crashed there. The two brothers looked at each other, then dove in. They passed the ship with flying colors. Then a huge rock formation exploded from the sea. It was in the shape of Bowser. They walked through it and into the Valley of Bowser. After two levels, they came to a fork. Mario took the fortress and Luigi took the ghost house. Luigi went to Cheatsy’s castle after he was done. Then he went to the Front Door of Bowser’s castle and worked his way through the castle. Then the Bros. met up at the roof top after Mario took a shortcut through the Back Door. Bowser was waiting there, and then they battled. After a while, Toadstool appeared and gave them Mushrooms. Then they defeated Bowser and their adventure was finally over.
