Chapter 1
It was a day like any other day in the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario was at Lori Lake fishing while Luigi was cleaning his new home next to Mario’s.
In Diamond City, on the outskirts of the kingdom, Wario was looking at the strange markings of an old map he had stolen from a pawn shop. He was so confused and so filled with curiosity that he bumped into people while he read it.
Wario: This thing stinks! I don’t know if the lands it shows exist! What on earth is this map showing?!
Wario then stopped by a phonebooth. He dialed a few numbers until he heard a voice.
Receiver?: What is a-going on?!
Wario: Hey, ain’t this Waluigi?
Waluigi: Wario? Hey, long time, no see! Or hear, anyway…
Wario: Hey, can you come to my house in an hour?
Waluigi: Sure.
In a few minutes, Waluigi walked into Wario’s home. Waluigi sat on the sofa.
Waluigi: What’s going on, Wario? Is your cable messed up again?
Wario: Yeah, but that’s not why I called you. Here.
Wario handed Waluigi the map.
Waluigi: Check out this thing! It’s in a different language! What’s the catch?
Wario: It’s some kind of map. I have no clue whether this is real or what.
Waluigi: I know a guy who may help!
Meanwhile, Mario returned to his home with a bucket full of fish. After stuffing the fish into his personal freezer, Luigi ran inside.
Mario: Mamamia! What’s the problem?
Luigi: Mario! Wario and Waluigi are battling Bowser in Toad Town! They’re destroying everything!
Within a few seconds, Mario warped to the center of Toad Town and saw Wario, Waluigi, and Bowser fighting over the map.
Mario: STOP!!!
They all stood still.
Mario: What’s a-going on?!
They continued fighting, ignoring what Mario had said. Luigi had enough of this fighting and charged up a huge fireball. He shot it towards the brawlers, sending them flying.
Wario: That’s MY map...!
Wario’s voice softened as he was sent flying into the sky. Mario looked at the map that had been dropped. He was as confused as Wario had been.
Mario: What is this map?
Suddenly, Mario and Luigi turned into Fire Mario and Fire Luigi.
Luigi: What?! Why are we fiery now? We never touched a single Fire Flower!
Suddenly, a Toad with yellow spots on his Mushroom head and a suit popped out of nowhere.
??? : Hello, travelers. I am known simply as Toad. Nothing else- except the keeper of the map.
Mario: Huh?
Toad: When this map touches a person with a good heart, he or she must find the secret before evil does.
Luigi: What is it, then?
Toad: A treasure known as The Crystal of One-Thousand Mysteries. Anyone who gets their hands on it can have unlimited strength.
The Bros. were amazed to hear this.
Toad: A great evil will rise to get it. Mario, Luigi, you must find it before the evil does.
Mario: You can count on us!
Toad disappeared, leaving the Mario Bros. on a quest they’d never forget.
Mario looked at the map and noticed that he could now read the first part of the map. It read:
The treasure,
it is made
Into 10 sharp
keys that laid
Across many
lands, I say,
One is in
a land that rhymes with "Kay".
Mario: Very confusing.
Luigi: What land rhymes with Kay?
Mario: … Err… um… Something… Bay?
Luigi: The Toad Town Bay!
Mario: Let’s hurry!
Mario and Luigi found the bay and read the next clue:
If breathing
water is what you lack,
Why bother
riding the boat’s back?
The answer
lies in a call!
Speak up,
and don’t fall!
Luigi: What does THAT mean?
Mario: Hmm… I remember once that a whale came here and transported me to the next destination. But where he is I have yet to know.
Luigi: Hey, whale! Come here, boy!
Luigi tried to call it with a whistle but nothing worked. Suddenly, a huge whale floated up.
Mario: Hello?
Whale: Hi, Mario. Want to go to Yoshi Island?
Mario: Hang on.
The next clue
reads:
Not too far,
but not too close,
Because we
have a clue to pose!
The land is
not so far (duh)
Want some
Chuckola Cola?
Luigi: Oh, I get it! Duh, Cola! It rhymes!
Mario: No, Luigi.
We have to go to the Beanbean Kingdom. Chuckola Cola is only made there!
Chapter 2
Bowser woke up, feeling sand on his feet.
Bowser: GRR!!! I’ll get those puny plumbers for hitting me like that!
Bowser looked around and saw nothing but sand.
Bowser: Aw, crud! I’m in Dry, Dry Desert! GRA!!!
Bowser took out a little ball and crushed it. Suddenly, his clown float grew in size. Bowser leapt in.
Bowser: Good thing Kamek transformed my clown float into a portable! Now to get those Brothers!
Meanwhile, Mario and Luigi rode on the whale to the southern point of the Beanbean Kingdom. Mario looked at the map.
Mario: No new clues yet.
Luigi looked a little frightened. Mario asked him if he was okay.
Luigi: L-l-l-look! HURRICANE!
Mario was shocked to see a hurricane heading straight towards them!
Meanwhile...
In a far-off planet called Final Destination, a mysterious figure appeared out of nowhere.
Toad: I gave them the orders to keep the map, Master.
???: Good work. Those fools think they’ve seen the last of me after what happened last time. They’ll lead us to the crystal, and I’ll finally be whole again! Ha-ha-ha-ha!
Do Mario and Luigi
have a chance to survive the hurricane? Who is Toad working for, and who
is the mysterious being? To be continued in Chapter 3!
Last time, Mario and Luigi obtained a map that turned them Fiery Mario and Luigi. A Toad had told them that they needed to find a rare treasure before a great evil does. Little do they know that they have been deceived by a mysterious figure.
Chapter 3
Mario tried to tell the whale to change course, but the heavy rain that pounded on them blocked off all sound and sight. Mario felt that he was somehow swooped up, and later found out he was getting sucked away by the wind!
Luigi grabbed Mario and pulled with all his might, but he was sucked up into the sky with his brother. They were sent flying for what seemed miles.
Meanwhile, Wario and Waluigi woke up in a small forest. Wario stood up.
Wario: Where are we?
Waluigi: Hmm…
He looked around.
Waluigi: We are in the forest surrounding Goomba Village.
Wario: I need that map back!
Waluigi: Hey, we couldn’t be any luckier!
Wario: Huh?
Waluigi: Since the Mario Bros. have the map, they might be going to Prof. Kolorado…
Wario: Who?
Waluigi: The guy that I said would help. I’ve told you that fifty times already!
Wario: Oh…
Waluigi: We couldn’t read the map, so they can’t read it either. Get it?
Wario: Oh, so they have to find Kolorado because he can translate the language! Where is he?
Waluigi: He’s been on a trip to Hoohoo Village for a month now. I’ll bet Mario and Luigi will try to find him, too. All we have to do is continue going this way!
He pointed in a direction.
Waluigi: Since Goomba Village is the closest place to the Beanbean Kingdom, we’ll beat them there much easier!
Wario: Let’s go!
Mario woke up and found himself and Luigi on a shoreline. They were not Fire Mario or Luigi anymore.
Mario: Wow. Wait! Where’s the map?!
Luckily, the map was in Mario’s back pocket, completely unharmed.
Mario: Hmm…
A new riddle appeared:
Next up is
a tough spot!
Be careful,
because you may get hot!
Two heated
enemies awaite your arrival
So wake your
bro and beat your rival!
Mario noticed that Luigi was still knocked out. Suddenly, two Spike Goombas appeared from nowhere. One charged toward Mario. Luckily, Mario sidestepped away from its attack. The Goomba hit Luigi, causing him to wake up.
Luigi: Yee-ow! My head!
Mario kicked the other Goomba into the other, and both were rolled away into the water.
Mario: Are you okay?
Luigi: Yes- ow. Hey, what a-happened?
Mario: A couple of Spike Goombas attacked us. The map apparently can alert us to enemies.
Luigi: Where are we, anyway? This doesn’t look like the Beanbean Kingdom.
Mario: Hmm…
The next clue reads:
Up on a hill,
down a fall,
You have to
go into a hall.
If you’re
lucky, maybe you’ll find
What you may
have missed behind!
Luigi: I still don’t know where we are.
Mario: Well, it may be better if we keep on moving.
Luigi: Agreed.
Chapter 4
Meanwhile, back in the Mushroom Kingdom, Peach was filled with worry over the news. She was reading the Kingdom Courier that had the headline “All-out Fight! Property Damage Due to a Brawl in Toad Town!”
Toadsworth came in with a letter.
Toadsworth: We found a letter outside Mario’s home.
She unfolded it and read it:
We are not
home right now. We have to do something urgent. We’ll be back soon, paisano!
-Mario
P.S. Do not
take our tomato sauce while we’re out.
-Luigi
Peach: I wonder where they went.
Toadsworth: Someone told me that they would be gone for a while.
A gold Toad walked through the lobby and into the princess’ throne room. It appeared to be Toad, the keeper of the map.
Toad: Are you Princess Peach?
Peach: Yes, why must you ask?
Toad: I am willing to buy your land.
Peach: What? What part?
Toad: All of it.
Peach: I’d never sell my whole kingdom. Do you need a place to stay?
Toad: I want your kingdom and that’s that. If I have to, I’ll take it by force.
He grabbed a remote from his pocket and pressed a button. A giant robot that had thousands of single-colored purple polygons leapt from the sky and crashed onto the castle. It then broke into smaller polygons and flew right toward the princess. It formed a cage around her.
Toad: It seems you have no choice. Sign over the kingdom before I have to trash it. I do not want to ruin it.
Peach: No!
Toad: Take her away.
The polygons flew into the sky, taking Peach with them.
Toadsworth: Princess!
Toad: I was hoping this would be more of a challenge. Polygon fighters- assemble!
Ten human-shaped figures formed out of nowhere, covered with purple polygons. They grabbed hold of Toadsworth and the polygons broke and formed a ball around him.
Toad: One down, two to go.
What is Toad’s plan? What did he mean by "two to go"? And where does the next riddle lead? Find out in Chapter 5!
