Shy

By Todd

There has always been a bit of confusion concerning the Shy Guys of the world. Why are they here? What are they hiding? Who is truly their leader? Many think that Wart is the original leader, then again Bowser and Kamek seem to have power over them. Perhaps it’s General Guy, the little fellow that Mario once defeated. No, it goes beyond that. But I am getting ahead of myself, let’s start at the beginning.

Many, many years ago, before society settled itself, Shy Guys were not as they are today. They did not wear masks or cloaks; they had no reason to. They were a race of creatures known as the Kai-Ten. The Kai-Ten weren’t the most beautiful of creatures, grotesque even, but they lived regular lives like many of the primitive creatures of the land. Society began to settle itself, both the Toads and Koopas began starting villages and systems of organization and a primitive form of currency. Of course, the Kai-Ten was growing in intelligence as the Toads and Koopas were. The Kai-Ten approached the village of Toads in order to build a bond, so they could grow together. The Toads, repulsed by how the Kai-Ten looked, rejected them almost immediately. They had a similar reaction from the Koopas, but Koopas are more of a meaner group, as we’ve seen today. As an insult one of the Koopa villagers created a primitive version of today’s Shy Guy mask and put it on one of the visiting Kai-Ten to hide its face, and began calling it Jajamija, which roughly translates from early Koopa language to “He who must be hidden”.

The Kai-Ten soon figured that the only way they could become acceptable was by hiding themselves behind masks and cloaks. From that point on, it became as if an unspoken law that the Kai-Ten must always remain hidden in cloaks and masks. They soon adopted the name “Shy Guy,” once a more modern language became more common; Jajamija was just too much of an insulting name.

After many years of this tradition continuing, many Shy Guys began to forget what had happened, and didn’t even know anymore why they remained hidden. Though there were the few who still knew. Those who knew in this modern day don’t hold any contempt for what happened to their ancestors, many actually enjoy their hidden lives.

20 years ago, in a small village in Sub-con, an Anti Guy heard the story of the troubled past of Shy Guys. From the moment he heard it, he discontinued wearing his mask. He gathered forces and began an attack on the world. He did terrible things, killing the innocent, destroying villages. He was known the world over as Rexnor, the Anti Guy who wasn’t. Rexnor took his name because he didn’t want the oppressing name of “Anti Guy.” He made it all the way through the Sub-con and Yoshi’s Island. He came to the Yoshi-Doughnut Bridge when a band of Yoshis managed to stop him.

Rexnor escaped with only a few Shy Guys and his life. Ever since that day, he’s never been heard from again. Some think he’s given up and is remaining hidden, others think he’s still out there, planning, growing and creating an immense army…

Years later in Sub-con, a Shy Guy in yellow walked along a trail, coming to a group of other Shy Guys who had gathered. He recognized most of them and ran up to another Shy Guy in red. “What’s going on?” it asked. The red Shy Guy turned to him.

“Didn’t you remember? Today’s the day,” he whispered. The yellow Shy Guy gasped when he released what the other Shy Guy was saying. More arrived before a very recognizable tank drove up. General Guy popped out of its lid.

“That’s all there are from this sector? Ah well, everybody in,” General Guy said, opening a hatch in the side of the tank. The Shy Guys that had gathered, entered, the last one closing the hatch.

The tank took them far away, away to a hidden location. There was a large stage, surrounding by a huge group of different types of Shy Guys, sorted by groups. A hush fell over the crowd when a Shy Guy wearing a bowtie walked out onstage to a microphone.

“Ladies and gentleguys! It is I, Game Guy, and though I am quite the impressive fellow, we all know why we’re here, right?” he called out. The entire audience cheered loudly until Game Guy quieted them.

“Now, it brings me great pleasure to introduce, Rexnor!” he yelled. The audience cheered more as a figure that was twice the size of a normal Shy Guy walked out. He wore a long, black cloak with no belt or mask; all that could be seen out the hood was a pair of glowing, red eyes. Game Guy stepped back as Rexnor approached the microphone.

“Fellow Shy Guys! It brings me great pleasure that our attack on all other species of the world will begin tomorrow! Let’s show the world just how ‘shy’ we are!” he said as the audience continued to cheer.

“Now, I’m sure you all are wondering how we’re going to do it this time. Since last time we tried, we were much smaller and were stopped by a bunch of Yoshis,” he said. The audience booed.

“This time, we will be attacking the world in parts, each sector led by one of the generals,” he said. On cue, the first to walk onstage was General Guy. Following him were Shy Guys of other types dressed much like him.

“With my leadership, their tactical genius, and all of your fighting skills, we will take over the planet and all will respect the Kai-Ten, until they die, of course,” he laughed.

“Tonight, I will meet with the generals, then they will lead you on your way to take over the world,” Rexnor yelled. He turned away and walked offstage, the generals following him. Game Guy came back to the microphone and instructed all the Shy Guys where they would stay. Tomorrow would begin the great revolution of the Shy Guys…

A shrill cry rang through the air as a young Goomba girl began to weep. Surrounding her was a punk-gang of Koopas who had managed to corner her in an ally.

“Don’t think that crying will make us feel sorry for you,” one of the Koopas said, kicking dirt into the Goomba girl’s face. The girl continued to cry as the Koopas snickered amongst themselves and started walking closer to her.

“Don’t you dare take another step,” a voice called from behind them. The Koopas turned around and saw shadows of five different figures standing against the sun.

“Oh? Who’s going to stop us?” A Koopa asked.

“Heh, I believe that would be us,” a female voice laughed. Before the Koopas could react, one of the shadows jumped up and dug into the ground while another took off into the air with a sound of rotating blades. It propelled to the Koopas and body slammed one into another, knocking them on their backs. The other four Koopas watched as their two fallen comrades were pulled into the ground. While they were distracted one of them was hit with a bone and was also knocked to the ground and pulled under. The remaining three Koopas didn’t want to take their chances and ran to attack those attacking them.

They ran right at the tallest figure still at the entrance, but no sooner had they jumped them did they simply fall to pieces, and the attacking Koopa fell on the ground, being pulled under like the others. The last two looked at each other with worried looks on their faces. They tried to run away, but something shot under their legs, tripping them. The last two were pulled underground. The Goomba girl sighed in relief. The flying figure came closer to her, and coming into better light, revealed himself to be a Fly Guy.

“Are you ok?” asked the Fly Guy, reaching out a hand to help her up.

“Well, I-I…” the Goomba girl stammered. She was still shaken up by the incident. The taller figure at the entrance, who seemed to reappear out of nowhere, walked to the girl; it reviled itself to be a Dry Bones with a bow and pink hair.

“Oh, the poor dear is frightened to death,” she said, coming up to the Goomba. Of course, a live skeleton running up to her didn’t help the Goomba feel any better.

“Dianne, you’re a Dry Bones, I don’t think you’ll help her feel any better,” a voice called from the various holes in the ground. A Monty Mole popped its head out of the ground; Dianne looked at it apathetically.

“Well, I don’t suppose you’d do any better, Monty,” she said to the mole, turning back to the girl. Monty just grunted and turned to the other three.

“You guys want to help me here? Six Koopas aren’t the lightest things in the world.” A Spike Top with a blue shell and wild hair, and a cowardly-looking Cheep Cheep came forward and grabbed hold of the rope Monty had.

“Who-who are you people?” the Goomba asked. The Fly Guy turned back to her,

“I’m Terry, the Fly Guy.” The Dry Bones looked to the Goomba sweetly

“You can call me Dianne, deary.” The other three finished pulling up the Koopas, who were now tied up with rope.

“Not like you need to know, but I’m Monty,” the mole said, turning away.

“Ich bin die Spike Top, mien name bin Andrew,” said the Spike Top in a rough, to-the-point voice.

“Eh, he’s Andrew and I’m Kenny,” said the Cheep Cheep nervously. Terry flew around dramatically.

“And we are… we are… Did we ever decide on a name?” he asked turning to the group.

“Whatever would we need a name for?” Monty asked as he started pulling the Koopas out of the ally.

“Namenshilfe leute definieren uns wie, wer wir sind,” said Andrew.

Before the argument could be continued further, a police Toad walked past the ally. He took a double-take and exclaimed. “What’s all this then?” The Goomba girl ran up to the Police Toad.

“Oh Officer, I was going to be beat up by those Koopas when these people saved me,” she said, almost crying again. The officer looked at the girl, then to the tied-up Koopas and then to the heroes.

“Well, I suppose I should thank you then. I’ll need everybody back at the office though to fill out a report,” the Toad said, scratching his head.

“Keine weise! Ich arbeite nicht mit der polizei!” Andrew exclaimed. Dianne picked him up.

“Oh, you fool, we’re only filling out a report, it happens in this line of work,” she told Andrew, whose feet were flailing in the air as he tried to escape, yet failed. The group followed the Toad to the police station; Monty was dragging the Koopas along the ground behind them.

Part One

As the group reached the police station, the area seemed oddly quiet. Inside they found many other police Toads and some other swarthy-looking characters. Two other Toads came and took the Koopas away from Monty, while the Toad that found them led them into an office. Once everybody was seated, the Toad turned to the Goombagirl.

“Now, please tell me what happened in the ally back there,” he told her. The girl told what the group had done, word for word and action for action. Once she finished, the Toad leaned back in his chair and mumbled to himself. The other five, sitting rather close together, looked back and forth to each other.

“Well, the story is pretty odd, rather farfetched, but you’re the only witness we have. I must say, congratulations on your apprehension of that gang,” the Toad complimented. Terry perked up.

“Of course, sir! Glad we could help make the world a better place.” They all signed some papers and left the station. They all, accept for Monty and Andrew, seemed pretty excited over their victory.

“Now see, I told you this was a good idea! Our first day and we’ve already helped somebody,” Terry exclaimed.

“Meh, was expecting something of a reward,” Monty commented, looking away. Dianne threw a bone at his head.

“You oaf, it’s not about the prize, we’re trying to help people, that’s why we’re doing this,” she yelled at Monty. Monty was about to respond when they heard a small rumbling sound. They turned to the direction it was coming from and found a whole group of Shy Guys running down the street past them.

“Freunde von ihrem?” Andrew asked Terry. Terry gave him an apathetic look, then turned with the others to see where they were running. Turning just in time to see, the Shy Guys ran into the police station.

“Must be some kind of emergency, perhaps we should see if we can help,” Terry said hopefully.

“D-do we h-have to?” Kenny asked.

“Solch ein baby nicht sein, lassen sie uns gehen sehen,” Andrew said, rushing past them to the police station. The rest followed… willingly or not. They came back to the station to find a good part of it seemingly under attack, the officer from before lying on the ground outside, looking beat.

“Oh my goodness gracious! Are you all right, deary?” Dianne cried, running up to the Toad.

“The-the Shy Guys. They’re attacking the station. Please... Help,” he said weakly. They looked up to see the group of Shy Guys ransacking the station, tearing it apart.

“Team, quickly! Save the station!” Terry shouted, being the first to fly in. The Shy Guy he flew to first didn’t seem to mind his presence until he kicked him in the head. The rest followed him in, except for Kenny, who kept near the entrance, avoiding the action. The attacking Shy Guys turned from whatever they were after to face the group. One jumped to kick over Andrew, but instead hit his spike and fell back. Andrew retracted into his shell and flew about the floor, knocking him aside.

Dianne had already pulled out a few bones and was directing them at a single Shy Guy. He didn’t fall over, but wasn’t able to do anything. Monty jumped up and dove into the ground. He dug to the other side of the room and popped halfway out of the ground and began throwing clods of dirt at random Shy Guys. Terry was still beating the same Shy Guy he’d flown to. The Shy Guys that hadn’t been attacked yet ran after various members of the group. Just as they were ready to dive, the front wall of the station was suddenly blown open. Everybody in the room stopped moving and watched. Once the dust cleared, a military-dressed Koopa stepped forward.

“Troops!” he cried as many more Koopas stepped forward, “Capture all the Shy Guys here!”

The small army of Koopas ran in, beating down the Shy Guys, shoving the others aside. One ran to Terry and pulled him out of the air, but was stopped before arresting him. “No, not the Fly Guy, he’s innocent,” called the leading Koopa. The Koopa dropped Terry and moved to the Shy Guy he was beating on.

The large army easily subdued the Shy Guys and took them, as well as the injured police, out of the now destroyed station. All that remained was the group and the leading Koopa.

“So, you all thought you could take on the Shy Guys, eh?” he asked.

“Bah! We could’ve taken them if you hadn’t showed up,” Monty said, pulling himself out of the ground. The Koopa general grinned.

“Exactly,” he said. They all turned to him, surprised.

“Was bedeutest du, Koopa-junge?” asked Andrew.

“What I mean, Mister Spikey, is that this army alone cannot take on this threat alone,” he explained.

“Wait, wait. What threat are you talking about, deary?” Dianne asked.

“Oh my, I forgot you don’t know what’s going on. Well take a seat and I’ll tell you,” he said, pulling up a piece of a desk.

“Lately, the world over, we have been attacked by various Shy Guys. It’s a large revolt, you could say, of the entire species,” he explained. Though nothing was said, a lot of tension was directed to Terry. The general sensed this and raised his arms.

“No, no, see. Not all Shy Guys are part of it. Obviously, your friend here isn’t part of this revolution. But as I’ve said, we need a team that can handle things where the army cannot, and it seems,” the general said, holding up a piece of torn paper; it was the report they had just filled out, “that you all are just right for the job.”

“W-why us?” Kenny asked, just now coming in the building.

“Oh, you aren’t alone, we’ll have more teams roaming around for the same purpose as you, so you don’t have the pressure of the world on your shoulders,” he said. Kenny sighed, half in relief.

“I still don’t see why we’re so special,” Monty said, turning away.

“Why, as you said yourself, my moley friend, you can take them on without help,” the general smirked. Monty grunted at having his words thrown back in his face.

“Well, what do you all say?” he asked. They came together and began discussing it.

“Come now, team, we wanted to prove ourselves, here’s the biggest chance we’ll ever get,” Terry said.

“Bah, let the army and those other teams take care of it,” Monty commented.

“Monty, I’m not going to stand by and let these Shy Guys take over the world, I say we do it,” Dianne said strongly.

“Tot-mädchen und fliegenjunge haben Recht, sage ich, daß wir es tun!” Andrew shouted. Kenny didn’t say anything, but it was obvious that he was unsure. Terry turned back to the general.

“On a vote of three to two, we’re going to do it,” Terry shouted. The Koopa general laughed heartily,

“So be it. I have many more groups to meet with, and more Shy Guys to stop, we’ll go ahead and send you on your first mission. There has been an onslaught of attacks of Pyro Guys on Delfino Island,” he said, standing up again.

“Wait, you're sending us off already?” Dianne asked.

“Why yes, we have to stop this as soon as possible. Do you have a problem with that?” the Koopa asked.

“Well, I kind of thought we’d have more time to prepare, to tell some people we’re leaving,” she explained.

“Bah, who do you have to say goodbye to? You’re dead,” Monty said. Dianne threw another bone at his head.

“Though I know you wish to do this, I must say that this is very important,” the Koopa started. The sound of helicopter blades could be heard from above.

“This helicopter will take you to Delfino Isle, but be careful. Like I said, you’ll be dealing with Pyro Guys, lotss of fire,” he explained as the helicopter set on the ground.

“My good Koopa… we were born ready,” Terry shouted.
