Prologue:
"Come on, you slugs! Go faster!" Such was the tone in a training mission in the Royal Koopa Army. The Troopas were there crawling through rows of barbed wire, overseen by their respective captains. And the commander of all this was General Deveraux "Ironshell" Koopa, the highest ranking Koopa Troopa of the army. The red-shelled general stood beside the training grounds, observing his Troopas as they maneuvered themselves under the wire and then over some obstacles.
Somewhere in the masses of Troopas several officers were shouting commands to the troops. Deveraux watched as Troopas in the lead climbed over a wall and then jumped down into a tube. That was where the operation ended. He checked his watch and smiled, seeing as the Troopas were passing beyond his expectations. A few slower Koopas were beginning to finish; Deveraux couldn't help but look at his watch again. Looking up, he saw the last Troopas still finishing the course. The general grimaced and whistled, and ordered those Troopas off the course.
"Okay useless,"
he began, "give me one good reason not to discharge you all right now."
The Koopa Troopas looked at each other, then at him, and all remained silent.
"I see," said Deveraux. "Dismissed!" He turned smartly on his right heel
and marched away.
Soon after, Deveraux was summoned before Bowser. He kneeled before the King of the Koopas, and stated, "What is it that you need, Your Highness?"
"General," began Bowser, "I need you to recapture one of our forts from the Mushroom kingdom as soon as possible."
"Sir," said Deveraux cautiously, "with all due respect, such a military installation would require legions of Troopas to overwhelm and defeat. It could take months for a fort to surrender to a siege."
"Months?"
"But Daddy!" interrupted Wendy, who had been listening to the conversation. "I left one of my best bows there! I want it, I want it, I want it!"
"Then it must be done quickly. Send in all your men, General, and overrun that fort A-S-A-P!"
"What? Your Higness, surely you jest! Such an assault would kill off my troops!" Deveraux had a worried look on his face, but Bowser did not care at all.
"Go send in all
your Troopas at once and overrun that fort, or consider yourself discharged
from the army." Deveraux was disappointed by that and he looked at Wendy,
who had a satisfied smirk on her face. Deveraux turned around and got ready
to gather his Troopas.
General Deveraux was with his trusted officers in a barracks tent. He started off the discussion by saying, "Well men. Our assault will be taking place today at exactly 1800 hours. Get all of your men ready."
"What? You can't be serious, General! We'll take more casualties than it is worth!" said a colonel.
"We'll lose more than 85 percent of our men!" said another officer. After that several of the officers began talking at once until the general spoke up.
"I know it's a suicide mission but it's King Koopa's orders. I guess he'd rather take military advice from that bratty little Wendy than from me."
"Don't let your Troopas hear you say that, General. You'll get in a lot of trouble."
"I frankly don't care," said Deveraux. "They'll all be dead soon anyways..."
Eighteen hundred hours came, and the Troopas were ordered out. The assault took 20 minutes instead of the months it would have taken to surround and lay siege. The Koopas were victorious, but when the general saw the Troopas that came home, he was horrified. More than a quarter of them didn't return.
General Deveraux started to shake his head and suddenly he became filled with anger. Every single time, every attack, every single military operation ended in failure. He found himself blaming Bowser for all those failures. He was also blaming the Koopalings as well, all eight of them, who were probably accountable for many of the military disasters as well. Deveraux shifted his red beret and straightened it, and he walked back to his most loyal officers. Upon meeting them he came to see them criticizing Bowser as well. Instead of doing what he should have done, and discharged them, he simply joined them.
Soon enough the dissent grew worse, and a colonel asked Deveraux a question. "General?" he asked. "How would you feel about leading us in a coup d'état?"
Afterwards everyone became silent. Everyone looked at each other, and Deveraux replied with a swift, "Yes. If we are going to overthrow Bowser and his family, we are going to need to capture the old Magikoopa."
"Kamek? Why?"
"You'll see,"
said Deveraux. "It's all coming together now."
Chapter 1: Hookbill the Koopa
Early the next morning Bowser left Kastle Koopa to try and takeover the Mushroom Kingdom. "Aww, come on, Kind Dad!" exclaimed the Koopalings. "Can't we come with you?"
"No," replied Bowser. "You're going to stay here. Kamek will stay and keep an eye on you. Don't cause him any trouble, okay, or you'll be hearing from me."
"Yes, King Dad," replied the Koopalings in unison. They proceeded back inside the castle and into a large living room where they went to pass the time. Wendy was busy trying on makeup, Iggy was hiding from Roy, Roy was looking for Iggy, Ludwig was busy inventing something, Morton was talking to himself, Lemmy was looking for a ball, Bowser Jr. was painting, and Larry was spying on everyone else.
It wasn't long before the Koopa Kids became bored. Iggy tried to spark a conversation by asking, "Hey guys, when do you think Kamek will get here?"
Of course, there was no immediate reply, but soon Morton said, "That's a very good question, Iggy. Kamek should have been here by now. He's got this magic broom that he can fly on so I'm pretty sure he can get here quickly, and not only that but I think he can teleport wherever he wants to go to. And-“
"We get the picture!" interrupted Ludwig.
Morton looked around at his siblings and then there was a knock on the door. He walked to the entrance and asked, "Who's there?" He opened the door and there stood Kamek. Without saying a word, the old Magikoopa stepped inside as the Koopalings stood still, watching him.
Kamek looked at
them and said, "Good morning, children. I'm really tired today and I have
a headache so please just try to stay a little bit quiet." He then walked
to a couch and seated himself. The rest of the Koopalings stood in a semi-circle
around him and then dispersed after a few moments of silence. As everyone
went to resume their normal activities, Kamek slumped into the couch, closing
his eyes and trying to filter out any noise.
Meanwhile in the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario and Co. were picnicking on the front lawn of the castle. Mario reached into the basket and helped himself to a grilled cheese sandwich. Luigi then said, "Wow, this is nice, being able to picnic and all without having to worry about anything." He looked around and saw the peacefulness of the kingdom.
"Well," spoke Peach, "I guess we can only wonder what Bowser and his kids are up to."
"What?" said Mario. "You should really lighten up, Princess. This could be one of the only days we don’t have to worry about the Koopas."<br>
"I still think they're up to something." replied Peach.
She took out a
sub sandwich and opened it up to see its contents. Luigi saw it and quickly
proclaimed, "That's mine, Princess!" She handed him the sandwich and continued
searching through the basket. Several Toads stepped outside the castle
doors and handed out dishes of food.
"Where is he?!" General Deveraux furiously looked throughout Kamek's home, overturning furniture and knocking down doors. His Troopas could not find him, and they had stormed every single room in the building. "This is my luck! How can he be gone?!" Deveraux stomped to a small couch and flipped it over, then opened several cabinets full of magic potions and ingredients needed to create them.
"Well well well," said Deveraux, "Come look what we have here. These could come in handy." He continued searching thourgh Kamek's house. He came across a book hidden under the mattress. Curious, he opened it, and inside was a record of every spell Kamek had ever used. And inside it, something caught Deveraux's attention.
The page was titled "Hookbill the Koopa", and below it was a description of the potion used. The page described the effects of the potion, first used during an operation to stop Yoshi from reuniting the Marios when they were newborn infants, and the second to stop Yoshi from reaching Bowser when he was busy casting a spell that would cause the world to flood. Both times resulted in "an oversized Koopa, with limited capabilities of speech. The creature was capable of speech but it stuttered nearly every word and many times it would just give up speaking in the middle of a sentence. The Koopa was unrealistically large, taller than King Koopa himself, but it was incredibly dimwitted and listening obediently to every order he gave it. The creature had a horrific problem with its eyes, worse than Lemmy Koopa, and it could not set its eyes on an object for more than a few seconds. It always was looking in two random directions at once. The Koopa was also incredibly strong, being resistant to every one of Yoshi's attacks, except from a ground pound to the stomach, which I discovered was not affected by the potion when I poured it on the Koopa. In the second trial the potion worked fine and the Koopa was nearly invincible, although it hardly was a match for the blasted Yoshi in a game of Tetris. For that effect the Koopa had to drink the potion instead of the potion being dropped on it from above..."
Deveraux set the book down with an idea at hand. He ran to the cabinets and looked for the potion. He found it and nearly dropped it from excitement. "You there!" he called. "Come here, now soldier. I need you to drink this!"
"Me?" asked a Troopa.
"Yes, you, drink this!" Deveraux could hardly contain his excitement as he handed the potion over to the Koopa. The innocent Troopa merely shrugged his shoulders and drank the liquid to the last drop. He grimaced at the taste of the potion and started to spit on the ground. Deveraux waited patiently for a few minutes, but became disappointed as nothing seemed to happen. He turned around, and as soon as he took a step he heard a hiccup.
Alerted, the general turned back around and gazed at the Koopa, who was now changing colors. He took a step backwards, and watched as the shell of the Koopa Troopa began to grow. Soon enough the little Koopa fell into its large shell, which rolled onto its bottom. Suspense filled the air as Deveraux and his troops watched uneasily as a huge hand reached out of the massive, red shell. Another hand reached out, and then came its legs. The Koopa stuck out his head, with its eyes looking around in every direction, and stood up slowly in a dramatic fashion. Fully erect, the massive Hookbill Koopa stood nearly perfectly still with his massive arms held up in front of him.
General Deveruax gave Hookbill his first order, "Jump," and Hookbill leapt off the floor and punched his head through the ceiling. As the ceiling couldn't bear Hookbill's, weight he plummeted back to the ground, falling knee-deep into the floor. Hookbill stepped out of his footprints and walked up to Deveraux.
"Perfect," muttered Deveraux as he watched his creation stand obediently like a dog in front of him. "Let's move out." He turned smartly on his right heel and walked out the home, with Hookbill and the Troopas following close behind him.
