Iggy was in his room, getting ready for class. He thought to himself, ‘I sure am glad that I can finally go to class by myself.’ He had just gotten out of the hospital, his wounds sufficiently healed from that climactic battle with Exar. Lemmy was less lucky than he was. Lemmy had suffered almost fatal burns and loss of blood. The loss of blood had not been from open wounds but from deep bruises. He was still in the hospital. He was probably well enough to leave, but Koopas took no chances.
Iggy’s teacher was Mr. Waltensmith, a Sledge Brother, and Iggy’s personal advisor. He had come to Iggy’s hospital room to teach, but it was uncomfortable to crane his neck up too see him. Iggy was feeling better, but there was still a vague pain in the pit of his stomach. “How are you today, Iggy?” Mr. Waltensmith asked as Iggy entered the room.
“Oh, I’m okay. I’m not perfect, but I’m better than I was.”
“I hope you don’t have another relapse.” Earlier that week, Iggy had been ready to leave the hospital, but his wound on his arm had gotten infected, sending him back to the hospital. The infection had been easily extinguished, but Iggy had to stay in the hospital for three more days.
The pain in Iggy’s stomach got more intense as the day went on. He assumed it was just from lack of exercise, but it just hurt worse and worse as the day went on. Two hours into the class, the pain suddenly intensified, and Iggy keeled over. Mr. Waltensmith ran Iggy straight to the emergency room.
Ludwig was there, taking a test class to see if he liked it. He noticed all the doctors around Iggy, talking. “I haven’t seen a case this bad before.” “Neither have I. What kind of bacteria do you think it is?” “I don’t know, but we’re sure to find a cure.”
Ludwig elbowed his way up to Iggy’s bed. He took one look and said, “Can you not see? This is not bacteria, but rather a poison.” The doctors trusted Ludwig’s judgment, but they wanted to know what kind of poison it was. “I am not sure, but give me more time and I shall find out.”
Ludwig came out of the room later. He looked grim. “What is it, Ludwig?”
“It is a poison I do not know how to cure and will prove fatal if not cured in four weeks.”
Later that night, at the family meeting, they were all in the hospital so that Iggy and Lemmy could attend. Bowser started the meeting. “Not all of you know why you were called here tonight. Ludwig, tell them.”
“Iggy has been injected with a poison by an unknown agent. This poison is designed to make life pure torture for the one injected with it. For two weeks, the poison takes hold. There is no sign the victim has been poisoned. For the next two weeks, the victim experiences acute gastritis. If not cured within two more weeks, the victim starts to bleed from the mouth and nose. The victim will become listless as brain tissue begins to break down. If not cured within the next two weeks, the victim is beyond all hope of recovery. I do not need to tell you what will happen. Let me just say, we will not even be able to recognize the body.”
Lemmy paused for about 20 seconds, “Ludwig says Iggy will die a horrible death if we do not get rid of the poison he has in his body within four weeks.”
“How did he get the poison in his body, though?”
“I have a theory,” Iggy gasped, struggling upright.
“Lay down, Iggy,” Bowser reprimanded him. “Now, tell us your theory.”
“After Lemmy and I defeated Exar, there was an explosion. My arm was cut by a piece of the gem he condensed into. Poison might have been on the inside.”
“How do we get it out?”
“If Iggy was poisoned by a shard of gemstone, maybe another one will cure him,” Lemmy volunteered.
“Who would go get it?”
“I would,” Lemmy said
.“No,” Bowser decided, “You just got out of the hospital. I don’t want you to come back wounded.”
“But Dad…” Lemmy started.
“The answer is no,” Bowser said, “And to make sure you don’t leave… Kamek!”
“Yes sir?”
“Post guards around the castle. Don’t let anyone out!”
“Yes sir.”
Lemmy was already forming a plan. The first thing he did was ask Larry for some special herbs. He then got Ludwig to give him one of his simpler inventions. Next, he got an old costume dress from Wendy, and a Mushroom hat from his own closet. Morton donated a copy of his latest speech, and Roy gave him a pair of sunglasses. He then stole a wet washcloth from the kitchen. He put them all in the invention, a backpack.
Lemmy immediately set out. Two Hammer Brothers blocked his path. He lit the herbs in a nearby lava pool, and, breathing through the wet washcloth, brought them upwind of the Hammer Brothers. They were soon knocked out by the stench. Lemmy passed by them, chuckling at the stupid smiles on their faces.
He soon came to the Mushroom Kingdom. Before he passed the gates, he shrunk his ball and put it in his backpack. He next hid behind a tree and changed into the dress and Mushroom hat. “This is so humiliating. Oh well, can’t be helped. With luck, they won’t notice me.”
Lemmy walked through the streets, avoiding the crowded areas. Several times he tripped on the dress. “How on Plit does Wendy walk in these things?” he muttered. Lemmy made it through the Kingdom without any problems. However, there was one waiting for him outside. After putting the dress and cap back in his backpack and getting on his ball, he ran straight into Mario and Luigi.
“Hey! What’s-a Lemmy doing here?”
Lemmy thought fast.“Who is this Lemmy you speak of? My name is Melon Man! My job is to protect Plit from all villainy! With the power of the Honeydew, Cantaloupe, and Watermelon, all that stand before me will be defeated!
Mario looked at Luigi in confusion.
“Dost thou not believe Melon Man?”
An idea then managed to ram itself into Mario’s head. “If he’s Melon Man, then let’s give him to the Yoshis!” Without warning, they suddenly jumped on him. Lemmy could have stood just one, but they both jumped on him, and they had just eaten a huge pasta meal. Lemmy was knocked out cold.
Meanwhile, in New Castle Koopa, Ludwig was working hard on a new invention. It was designed to identify poison and discover it’s weakness, but he was having a few problems. First, Ludwig assumed the poison was in Iggy’s blood, but it was not. It had already gotten soaked into Iggy’s muscle tissue. Ludwig had to find some way to get a drop of it into a test tube for his machine to analyze. He had not slept in two days. He had sworn to himself that he would not rest until Iggy was better, or he collapsed from sheer exhaustion, which he soon did. Unfortunately, Ludwig was holding a vial of a very explosive chemical in his hand when he collapsed. Ludwig was blown sky-high, but New Castle Koopa had a very strong foundation, so the only damage was the blackening of the lab’s walls.
Mario and Luigi were dragging Lemmy to the sea shore. There was a whistling sound, and a blackened Ludwig dropped out of the sky, right in front of them. They decided to get two birds with one stone, and let Ludwig share Lemmy’s fate.
Lemmy awoke with a splitting headache. He was blindfolded, gagged, and tied down. There was a nearby groan. He could tell it was Ludwig. There was a sound like a door opening, and he could feel his bonds being cut. “Get up,” a hard voice said, “Time for your trial.”
Lemmy and Ludwig were dragged up stairs and across floors until they came outside. Their blindfolds were taken off, and they could see again. They were on a huge ship piloted by Mushroomers. They were thrown roughly to the deck. “Case 147, Ludwig and Lemmy Koopa vs. the Mushroom Kingdom.”The trial passed in a blur. All Lemmy remembered was Ludwig trying to defend them, but it was no use. “Foreman, have you reached a verdict?”
“We have, your honor. On the charges of helping kidnap Princess Toadstool, taking over several lands, and many more, we find Ludwig and Lemmy Koopa… guilty.”
“Wait! I want an appeal!” Lemmy shouted.
“Um, okay,” the judge said.
Lemmy whipped out the copy of Morton’s speech and began to read it. “Four score and seven years ago which is a long time because a score is twenty and four score means twenty times four which is eighty so it’s eighty years plus seven which is eighty-seven years or six hundred fourteen and one-half weeks or thirty-one thousand seven hundred fifty-five days or…”
“Aaaah! Stop! Stop! STOP!” The entire crew threw themselves overboard. Lemmy kneeled to the deck and gasped for air, since he had read the speech without breathing.
Ludwig helped Lemmy up, “Nice job, Lemmy. I never thought one of Morton’s speeches could actually be good for something.”
Suddenly, Lemmy realized something, “Hey Ludwig, do you know how to pilot a water ship?”
“No, why?”
“Well, we’re on one, and headed straight for Yoshi’s Island! There it is!”
Ludwig found the tiller. For the next two hours he tried to steer the ship, but he only practically turned the ship upside down. He managed to not smash into a boulder, but he ran aground on the beach.
“Congratulations Ludwig,” Lemmy muttered from the railing, his voice still queasy, “You managed to not kill us.”
They thought they were free, but they were wrong. As they looked out over the railing, they saw a crowd of Yoshis congregating on the beach.“Hey, what are Lemmy and Ludwig doing here?” “They’re probably here to take over again!” “GET THEM!”
Lemmy began to read Morton’s speech again. “Four sco-“
He got no further. A Yoshi, noticing the papers, snatched them out of his hands with its tongue and swallowed them. Lemmy and Ludwig gasped in surprise as ten Yoshis jumped up onto the ship. They caught Lemmy and Ludwig with their tongues, and they were dragged to a dungeon.“Don’t try to escape,” the guard said, “or else!”
Ludwig lifted himself off the ground where the guard had thrown him. “It seems they have made an error. They left the door unlocked.”
“Yes, they have,” Lemmy said, heaving himself up, “So let’s escape!”
They ran down the hallway, Lemmy in the lead. He turned a corner and came across five guards holding bows and arrows. One of them aimed an arrow straight for his heart. “We told you not to try to escape,” the guard snarled, “Now you must be punished!”He shot the arrow.
Lemmy prepared to die, but what he got was much worse than death. The arrow passed right through him, but the Yoshis suddenly disappeared. As he turned to look for them, he heard a noise above him. The ceiling was collapsing! A large piece fell on Lemmy, pinning him to the floor. The rest of the ceiling fell, and Lemmy was trapped in a pocket of air, while the rest of the rubble around him sank down, beginning to slowly crush him. Nobody knew this, but Lemmy was deathly scared of enclosed spaces. He tried not to scream, but then he saw, through a hole in the rubble, a wall of fire coming straight towards him. Lemmy screamed in terror, felt the fire engulf his body…
Back in New Castle Koopa, Iggy was lying in the hospital bed. He had lost all track of time. His stomach was in intense pain. He was forced to go on a crash diet, as anything that entered his stomach was immediately vomited out again. He was only kept from starvation by having the nutrients continually pumped into his body systems. It was a very uncomfortable process, as the only way to inject them was through long needles. He hoped Lemmy would return soon with a cure. As he thought, he coughed. As his hand came away from his mouth, it shone with green blood.
Ludwig turned the corner, and saw the five guards watching Lemmy. He was on the floor, screaming. He barreled through the guards and snatched up Lemmy. As the guards gave chase, Ludwig dove through a hole in the floor. He sped along a long chute and surfaced up outside. Ludwig looked around. He saw a huge waste land. It was all sand, with a few bubbling pools with green slime at the top. It was not hot as dark clouds obscured the sky. It was however, humid, and the most hideous scent ran abound in the air.
Lemmy began to slowly regain his senses. “Lemmy, are you okay?” Ludwig asked breathlessly, “You seemed like you were in pain.”
Lemmy looked around, alarmed, “Where are we?”
“Outside the castle,” Ludwig explained.
Lemmy sighed. “Good, I never want to go in there again.”
“What did they do to you?”
“Those arrows create terror,” Lemmy responded, “When one of them hit me, I would have done anything they wanted, just to make it stop.” He shuddered at the thought.
“Well, you’re free now. Unfortunately, I have no idea where we are.”
“Maybe we can find a map, I’ve heard sentient beings live everywhere on this planet.”
Five days later…
“I can’t stand it anymore! I’m so thirsty!”
“I am too, Lemmy, but we can’t drink from that!”
“Yes, we can! I’ll make it good! I’ll do the water dance of Koopailathia!” Lemmy laughed crazily as he ran in circles.
Ludwig saw he had no choice. “Sorry, Lemmy,” he said, “but I have to do this.” He reeled back and punched Lemmy in the jaw. Lemmy dropped to the ground like a ton of bricks. Ludwig hefted Lemmy on his shoulder. He started to trudge onward, but a glint caught his eye. Looking towards it, he saw an oasis of pure water. Turning on his heel, he stumbled towards it. Lemmy awoke to water being poured on his head. Opening his eyes, he saw Ludwig leaning over him. “Good, you’re up. I thought I’d lost you for a second there.”
“You’ll be sure soon!” a mysterious voice cut through the air.
Looking around, they saw strange things around them. They looked like Hammer Brothers, but instead of hammers they wielded ugly looking pieces of metal. “Lemmy,” Ludwig whispered hurriedly, “Do you have your wand?”
“Yes,” Lemmy whispered back. The Hammer Brothers threw their metal things towards them. Lemmy and Ludwig raised their wands up in the air. The metal things bounced off an invisible force field.
“The One!” the leader gasped, “Which one of you is the One?”
“Me,” Ludwig said.
“You are an imposter!” the leader shouted. “You are the One!” he said, pointing at Lemmy.
“Me? I can’t be!”
“You are, for the prophecy states that the One will deny he is the One. The One shall come with an imposter, claiming to be the One.” He pointed at Ludwig. “Troops, destroy that imposter!”
“No!” Lemmy yelled, “You can’t!”
“It is fulfilled,” the leader murmured, “The One shall not let His people destroy the imposter.”
“Okay, but call me Lemmy.”
“Yes, On-Lemmy.”
“By the way, what’s your name?”
“You may call me Talis.”
That night, Lemmy had just related their entire story to the tribe, “…and now we are trying to find a cure for my brother. We think it is a white gem.”
After conferring for a few minutes with the tribe elders, Talis stood. “We have decided to help you. The tribe of Calan is at your service.”
Back in New Castle Koopa, Bowser sat on his throne. He could feel a sense of impending doom. Iggy was getting worse by the second. He had to assume Lemmy and Ludwig were gone. That made three out of seven Koopalings dead. He knew Lemmy was probably not dead, but he was used to expecting the worst. He decided to visit Iggy. He couldn’t talk to him, but he could offer moral support. Right now, Lemmy was Iggy’s only hope.
In the camps of the Calan tribe, Lemmy was having nightmares. The main ones were nightmares where Exar had been revived and was taking revenge, and where Lemmy was forced to watch Iggy decay and die slowly. He sat up in bed. Ludwig was sleeping peacefully beside him. Lemmy decided he would formulate a plan during the night.
The journey started at dawn. The tribe packed up the camp into several large bags hoisted onto their shoulders. “We must be careful,” Talis told Lemmy, “There are many enemy tribes around here.”
“Don’t worry,” Lemmy responded, “We can handle them.”
The next seven days passed uneventfully. They passed out of the badlands and into a lush forest. As they were walking, a knife whistled by Lemmy’s head and sunk into a tree next to him. “Stay still!” a voice shouted, “Put your claws on your head!”
“Oh, great,” Lemmy muttered as he put his claws on his head. More Hammer Brother-like creatures stepped out from behind trees. These ones wielded knives. Lemmy reached behind his head. His claw closed on his wand. He couldn’t use it, as a knife was near his throat.
The leader of that tribe stepped forward. “You have a lot of nerve, venturing so far into our territory,” he sneered, “but you will go no further. Kill them.”
Lemmy, knowing that what the leader said was true, acted quickly. He grabbed the knife that was pointed at his throat, trying to keep it away. His other hand waved the wand. Suddenly, all the enemies were thrown deep into the woods by a magic blast.
“Phew, that was close,” Ludwig told Lemmy, “Good job on driving them away.”
“Come, we must hurry,” Talis said, “They will soon be back, and in greater numbers too.”
That night they reached a cave. “That cave is where the stone is. Only the One, that’s you Lemmy, may go inside.”
“I’ll see you soon,” Lemmy said as he went inside.
Back in New Castle Koopa, Bowser was desperate. Iggy had just passed the four-week mark. There was no way for him to recover on his own. His only hope was Lemmy now. He just hoped that Lemmy would get back before Iggy died.
In the cave, Lemmy had spent two days searching. He was beginning to doubt that there was a gem inside. It was then that he turned a corner and saw it. The gem was on a pedestal covered with violet linen. Lemmy stepped towards it, but as he did, he heard a violent hissing. A huge serpent slithered out of a crack in the wall. Lemmy dove to the side. A bat behind him locked gazes with it and fell dead to the floor.’This must be a basilisk! The king of serpents!’ thought Lemmy Its gaze was death, and its breath was toxic.
Lemmy hid behind the corner and came up with a plan. He reached into his backpack and came up with Roy’s sunglasses. He put them on and turned the corner, his wand at the ready. The basilisk was waiting for him. It glared him in the eye. Lemmy slammed his eyes shut. There was a loud crack and a thump. Lemmy opened his eyes. The basilisk lay dead at his feet. The surface of the super-reflective sunglasses had reflected its gaze right back at it. It had naturally suffered the consequences. The sunglasses, unable to take the full force of the gaze, had shattered. Lemmy dashed up to the pedestal and snatched up the gem.
Lemmy spent another day finding his way out. He came out to a gruesome scene. Many of the Calan tribe, including Talis, lay dead at his feet. Ludwig limped up; his right leg and left arm slashed to the bone. “Ludwig! What happened?” Lemmy gasped, shocked.
“That knife wielding tribe came back. We fought them off, but not without great losses,” Ludwig responded, gesturing towards the dead, “Did you get the gem?”
“Yes, I did,” Lemmy replied, holding up the gem. It was glowing brighter. All the dead and injured were glowing too. Their wounds healed, and the dead came to life.
“Wow…” was all Ludwig had to say.
Lemmy took charge. “Okay! Let’s get back to the castle!”
They were back at the castle in eleven days. The first words out of Lemmy’s mouth were, “Where’s Iggy?”
Bowser led them to him. They were astonished at the scene they saw. Iggy was covered with green blood. His flesh was deteriorating rapidly, and they might as well not bothered about the shell. Iggy feebly lifted a claw, “Lemmy, you’re back.” Then he went limp.
“NOOOOOOO!” Ludwig screamed, “After all that, we came here only to find that we were three seconds late!”
“No, it’s not over,” Lemmy said softly. He went over and placed the gem on Iggy’s mangled corpse. He then covered it with both hands. The stone burned like fire. A blinding light came from the stone. Iggy was glowing too. When the light subsided, Iggy was on the bed, asleep, good as new, and the gemstone had dulled to a white rock.
“Come on, he needs his sleep.” Bowser whispered.
Iggy has now completely recovered. All the Koopas are leading their normal lives again. They will all sleep easier now, as that Exar’s legacy, his last hope of revenge against the Koopas, is now over.
