I'll have more reason than the ghost gave me... The play's the thing where I'll catch the conscience of the king.
Chapter 6: The Madness of Love
Later that night, Morton was sleeping, only to be awaken by a knocking on his door.
"Yes... Who is this?"
"It's me... Your cousin."
"Susan? What do you want?"
"Oh, I have been so frightened!"
"By what?" asked Morton as he walked over to comfort Susan.
"I was... asleep, when all of a sudden Larry walked into my room! But... he looked different... His hair was a mess, and he looked so tired! And pale, too... And he looked as if he had been to the abyss and back. He rushed right up to me!"
"Mad for your love?"
"Oh, how should I know? Somehow... I fear of that possibility!" wailed Susan.
"Well... what did he say?"
"He grabbed me by the wrist... so hard! He just stared at me... as if he wanted to paint a portrait of me! Then... he shook my arm, and nodded his head! THREE times! Sighing so pitifully... as if his body had been shattered! Then... finally... he let go..."
Morton just chuckled. "Heh... Why, Susan, that is just the madness of love! It affects our desires, and turns them into desperate actions! Anyone's nature can be affected by this passion! I do apologize, but... Tell you what. Have you spoken harshly of him lately?"
"No, Morton... But I did as you said... I didn't reply to his letters, nor did I let him visit..."
"Aha!" cried Morton, running out of the room. "THAT has driven him mad! I do apologize, for I did not realize he really did care about you. I just figured it was just a passing fancy, and that he meant to ruin you! Come! We MUST tell the king!"
