Mario Kart 64
Balloon: Used only in battle mode, characters starts with three of these, and lose one each time they get hit. When all three are gone, the character is eliminated, though they can hang around as a Bob-omb Kart if at least two other players are still in the contest. Found by Choccy Koopa.
Banana: When hit, a racer spins out (possibly off the road). The effect can be avoided if the break is applied. These can be dropped or thrown.
Banana Bunch: This is five bananas. Each can be dropped or thrown, but all fall off at once if another racer hits the chain as it trails from the back of the kart.
Boo: When this is used, the racer that used it becomes invisible, and incincible to all but a Star. Boo will then steal an item and give it to the racer that used him, if any other racer has an item.
Boulder: Found in Choco Mountain. They will squish you! Found by Mario64.
Bounce Balls: Not an item that a character can use, but in DK's Jungle Parkway, if you go off the road, the animals hiding out in the trees throw these at you to bump you back onto the road. These won't affect you while you're invincible. Found by Yoshata.
Enormous Yoshi Egg: Found near the end of Yoshi's race track, this giant egg can flatten you as it rolls around in a circle. Found by Choccy Koopa.
Fake Item: These look like regular item pick-up spots, but they have an explosive nature. They can be dropped behind in a clever place.
Fishing Pole: When a racer uses this, they might catch some dinner. Actually, Lakitu uses this to help stranded racers.
Go-Kart: Racers drive these.
Green Shell: These can be fired forward or backward. A racer that is hit by this will be hindered.
Item: When a racer passes through one of these, they receive an item at random.
Jungle Boat: This boat is found in DK's Jungle Parkway. If Mario can touch it, he will fly in the air before he falls in the water! Found by Mario64.
Lightning Bolt: All racers spin out and then become smaller and slower for a limited time, except for the racer that used it.
Mario: A loser.
Mini-Bomb Kart: If the first or second player loses all their balloons in 3- or 4-player battle modes then they become a Mini-Bomb Kart. They can't win but can collide with other players, kind of like a human-controlled Red Shell. Found by Ludwig 222,
Mushroom: Yields a burst of speed.
Red Shell: When fired, this homes in on the racer one position higher than its owner, and then hits that racer. It can only be shot forward, and requires some space before it can lock on.
Spiny Shell: This locks on to the racer in the lead and then will hit that driver and any others in its path. It requires a runway to lock on.
Star: A racer that uses this will become invincible and much faster for a short time.
Super Mushroom: When a racer uses this, they can boost their speed many times. This item lasts for a few seconds after it is first used, so the number of speed boosts yielded can not be controlled by the driver.
Traffic Light: Lakitu uses this to start the race. Apparently he can't talk.
Triple Green Shells: Three green shells spin around as a shield. They can only be shot forward.
Triple Mushrooms: Three Mushrooms can be used at any time, each giving a burst of speed.
Triple Red Shells: Three red shells spin around as a shield. They can only be shot forward.
