King Koopa's Item Chest

Mario Pinball Land

? Block: This yellow block holds an item. If you roll into it hard enough you'll receive that item, unless you already have an item, in which case only a coin will pop out. Although most things reset once you leave a panel, used up ? Blocks will continue to be empty until you get Game Over. Each individual ? Block always has the same item, so you might learn where the good items are stored.

! Block: This red block appears in place of red switches once you've cleared the red coin challenges. If you hit this while you have no item in your inventory, you'll get a Red Yoshi Egg.

1-Up Mushroom: In Mario's own words, "Extra ball!" This green shroom is found on the Giant ?'s roulette wheel and can be bought from Toads for 100 coins. There may be other ways to get them too...

Ancient Statue: These appear in Shifting Sands. If you hit one it will cause the pyramid to grow. Found by Green Yoshi.

Beehive: Found in Grassy Greens. Sometimes if you hit this bees come out. You can get inside it and play on a mini-table if Mario is mini. Found by Green Yoshi.

Blue Coin: Better than the standard coin, these are dropped if Mario kills more than one enemy before returning to the paddles. Like the yellow coin, these must be collected independantly of the kill as well. They're worth more points than the regular coin, although they're not as useful as far as getting items is concerned. Only the Toad in the circus world trades in these. If the blue coin icon appears on the Giant ?'s roulette wheel, blue coins will be gifted to you.

Blue Switch: Hitting this switch hard enough will usually cause something good to happen. Well, good for Mario, that is.

Boss Statue: Sculpted to the likeness of the four bosses and located in the foyer of my castle, each one plays host to a keyhole that's just the right size for the key dropped by the corresponding boss. Unlocking a statue will cause a red switch to appear in place of that boss. Unlocking all four statues will open the gate that leads to the next room of my castle.

Cannon: Mario can use these to get between the worlds. To use one, he must first hit it with enough force to open the cannon, then roll nearby enough so as to be dragged into the hole. If you don't want to use the cannon, press L or R while rolling in. In three of the worlds, Mario must defeat the boss to make this appear.

Coin: The standard Mario-variety yellow coin. Mario can earn these by defeating enemies. The coin will drop to the ground and Mario must roll into it to collect it. Coins can be used to buy items from Toads, and also add to your score. If the yellow coin icon comes up on the Giant ?'s roulette wheel, you'll be given more coins.

Freezie: This giant ice block will slide around if hit. Position it over the crack in the ice to open the way to a new panel.

Giant ?: These usually appear in place of Stars that have already been collected, a counterpart to the blue Stars and Shines from Mario 64 and Sunshine. If you collect one of these, you'll then play the roulette wheel with a chance to win coins, points, or an item.

Golden Yoshi Egg: This can be found atop the pillar that appears when you activate a Yoshi Pedestal. If you wittle down the pillar by hitting all the targets, the egg will fall to the floor and be obtainable. Hitting the egg will release the jackpot!

Green Yoshi Egg: Although Yoshi himself does not appear in this game, his egg does. In Mario's own words, "Multiball!" A Yoshi egg can do everything Mario can, such as defeat enemies and hit targets. If it falls through the paddles it is simply lost. If Mario falls through while there are Yoshi eggs in play, he will still be immediately sent back to the last panel or lose a life. Up to two Yoshi eggs can be in play at a time. There is also a rare Double Green Yoshi Egg.

Iceberg: An iceberg on the ice in the snow world. Push it onto the crack to open a hole underwater that takes Mario to the Pufferfish boss. Found by tufus74.

Key: Featuring a star-shaped handle, these appear when a boss is defeated. They need to be inserted into the boss statues in the foyer of my castle.

Lightning Bolt: When used, this damages all enemies on the screen. This even works on bosses. There is also a rare Double Lightning Bolt.

Magic Pillar: Found in the boss room of Shifting Sands. If Mario hits these he will become bigger for a short period of time. Found by Green Yoshi.

Mini Mushroom: This tiny pink shroom makes Mario small for a limited time. He'll move more quickly and it is harder to keep him in play, but he can access special areas Mario would otherwise be too large to enter.

Mushroom Bouncers: Found in the blue coin Bob-omb minigame, four Mushroom-shaped bouncers will send Mario and the multiballs bouncing all over the place when hit. Found by ghettobananachris.

Power Star: Earned for completing tasks such as defeating all the enemies on the screen, Mario must collect these in order to gain passage through Star Doors.

Red Coin: These appear when you hit a red switch, and as usual, come in sets of eight. If Mario can collect each coin, a Star will appear in place of the eighth coin. The coins don't appear in the same section of the world, though, so you might have to hunt around a bit. They're worth quite a few points as well, although they cannot be traded.

Red Switch: These appear in place of the defeated bosses when Mario inserts the keys he's earned into the boss statues in my castle. If he hits one of these switches, a red coin challenge will begin. If Mario can collect the eight red coins within the time limit, a Star will appear.

Red Yoshi Egg: This comes out of ! Blocks. In Mario's own words, "Special!". Hm... Not as descriptive as some of his other comments. When used, Mario will become large and invincible, as if he had used a Super Mushroom and Starman, a warp pipe will appear, and a giant Yoshi egg will enter play. The effects last longer than they would normally.

Star Door: These lead between panels within a world. Each one has a number on it. If Mario has that number of Stars or more, he can open the door by rolling into it. He can then access the new panel by rolling through the opening. If a panel has more than one Star Door leading out of it, opening each door will cause them all to close again, so getting through a door requires good aim - or luck.

Starman: Once activated, this special Star makes Mario invincible for a limited time. He can hurt an enemy without moving very fast, even if the enemy isn't vulnerable to normal Mario. Invincible Mario will also continue straight through an enemy without bouncing off. There is also a rare Double Starman item.

Stone Button: Found in the pyramid, striking these hard enough will make enemies appear, open a hole to the next panel, or awaken Tutankoopa for his battle.

Super Mushroom: This red shroom makes Mario larger for a limited time. He doesn't have to move as quickly to hit a target or damage an enemy, and it is easier to keep him in play. He gets hit with less force, though, so it is harder to hit him to the top of the screen. There is also a rare Double Super Mushroom item.

Thumbs Down: Found on the Giant ?'s roulette wheel, this adds 100 points to your score.

Thumbs Up: Found on the Giant ?'s roulette wheel, this adds 100,000 points to your score.

Treasure Chest: Found in the first water panel of what is predominantly the ice world, striking all three of these hard enough will open the passage through the sunken ship. They are also worth a few points and hold some coins.

Warp Pipe: You would expect this to transport Mario somewhere, but actually it only serves to fill the space between the paddles so that it is harder for Mario to fall through. This item comes in single and double form, and a warp pipe will often appear on its own. They will disappear after a short time.

Yoshi Pedestal: One of these is found in four of the five worlds. Hit a Yoshi egg into the hole to make a target-lined pillar appear with a Golden Yoshi Egg on top.
