Donkey Kong Country Review

By Lord Seth

Note: This refers to the Game Boy Color version, not the Super Nintendo version of Donkey Kong Country.

Nintendo remade Donkey Kong Country for Game Boy Color a while ago. Now, I've  ever played the original Donkey Kong Country for Nintendo myself, so I can't really say which is better. The only thing I know for sure is that the graphics on DKC were much better. I WILL compare this sometimes to  DKC2. Remember, I am NOT comparing the original DKC to DKC2, I'm comparing this remake to Donkey Kong Country 2. Okay, let's go to the Review. This is out of 5 stars.

Graphics: *** 1/2

The graphics aren't as good as the original, but they're pretty good for a Game Boy Color.

Sound and Music: ** 1/2

Sometimes the music gets pretty tedious and repetitive. I really liked the music on King K. Rool, but he's the final boss so it's not heard much at all. The music at the start's not bad either. However,
some of it is pretty bad, giving this only two-and-a-half stars. If they would have made the sounds more interesting, I would have given it a better score.

Difficulty: **** 1/2

A VERY difficult game, or at least this version. DKC2 is pretty hard, but this one takes the cake. On the plus side, it saves your game after each level, and in DKC2 you have to get two tokens, then go to Kong Kollege (if you've opened either it or Funky's Flights II on the world you're on) and save it. This time it's simple and easy, at least. Another thing. In this one, Cranky keeps criticizing the game if you visit him, but will give you some tips. However, they're not much. In DKC2, the criticisms are funnier and shorter, and you can choose which level he'll give you a hint on (though unfortunately he'll sometimes charge you). This game's too hard, in my opinion. Like I said, at least it saves it immediately after each level. If you lose all your lives on DKC2, it reverts to where you saved your game last. On the Gloomy Gulch world of Donkey Kong Country 2 I got Game Overs over and over again until I finally managed to beat three really tough levels and save my game.

Replayability: ***

Well, you might want to go through the levels again to get 100%, and there are some bonus games included. Still, it's not too much, but better than a bunch of games.

Controls: ****

The controls are easy. Hold down B to run or roll into enemies. Press A to jump. Trouble is, timing is everything. If only they had had some more interesting moves, other than the simple run-jump-roll.

Fun Factor!: *** 1/2

Even if it's hard, it's still fun. The gameplay's not bad, but it has too much emphasis on perfect timing, especially in the Chimp Caverns world.

Overall: ***

I haven't played the original, so I can't say anything on that. If I had, I would give this a more exact score. If only they had remade DKC2! Hopefully they'll do that for Game Boy Advance... but I'd prefer an all new Donkey Kong game. And if they do remake it, let it save your game easier!

Reccomendation: If you have the original Donkey Kong Country, you'll probably want to pass on this. If you're one of those people who has a perfect record and hasn't gotten a Game Over once, get something else. If you want an challenging game, you want this. I don't think that  it's worth the full $30... it's more like a $25 thing. I wish Nintendo would charge $25 for all Game Boy games instead of $30... I know it would make me buy more.
