This game was one of the PS2's early
games back in late 2000, although hardly anyone got a PS2 until 2001
anyway. It's a mix of racing and tricks
over vast landscapes on ATVs, which in case you don't know, are almost
like motorcycles on four wheels. I received it at Christmas of 2001, but
now its price has fallen to $20 as it is a Greatest Hit on the PS2.
Yet again, the Review is on a 0-4 star scale, but you knew it would be, so why am I telling you this?
Graphics: ***1/2
This game is visually stunning. It's always nice to have a game that actually looks like it's for real. The landscapes are crisp and clear, and there isn't anything that I can see that is really bad. It's very nice, although not perfect.
Sound: **1/2
Well, if you enjoy the music to this
game, then maybe you could give it a higher rating. The sounds of the
ATV's engine are really nice. It makes
this game really sound real. So for once, the sound effects are good but
the music isn't.
Difficulty: ***1/2
All right, what's the point of contests being about tricks if you only land one out of every ten tricks you try? The trouble is, they try to make the game TOO real, and it makes it not fun and frustrating instead. Plus, you get the enjoyment of falling off your ATV any time you even bump into something, and then take about five to seven seconds to get back on. So they've made this game real, but a little TOO real, and it hurts for people who just want to have fun with the game.
Controls: *1/2
The controls are too confusing for me to remember. Why can't there be just one reverse button instead of having to push gas and brake at the same time? And the rest of the controls aren't hard, but I just don't remember them. I just know X is gas and O is brake. Or is it Square?
Tricks: 1/2
The tricks are pretty cool to watch, but since they are so hard to land, they really become pointless to pull off, but you still have to pull them off to win certain contests. Plus, the tricks require combinations of buttons, which again, I can't remember in mid-air. It upsets me, to say the least, because they could be fun, like in Tony Hawk 3.
Tracks: *
Sure, the tracks are huge, but they lack interactive environments. The trains are the only thing I can think of. A bunch of trees that knock you off your ATV if you brush by them don't make the "tracks" any better. So they're massive, but don't hold much substance to them.
Racing: *1/2
This is what the game should be about: racing. But racing takes a back seat to the tricks, although they're hard to pull off. A problem is the small Checkpoints you've got to get through, because even if you barely miss, you're going to have to turn around and surely lose the race. Annoying. Still, racing is better than the tricks competition.
Stability: no stars
When I stay stability, I mean staying on your ATV. And you don't. You constantly fall off, just by brushing by a building or tree, or even just trying to climb a ramp or stairs. Sure, it may be real, but if it's no fun for a video game, then what good is it being real?
Concept: ***
I like the concept of an ATV game. It's a nice, refreshing sport compared to a lot of other racing games. It's too bad the execution isn't very good. Unfortunately, you don't get as good of an experience as hoped.
Replayability: *
The lack of many tracks makes the replayability poor, although the "tracks" are big enough to explore several times before they wear out their welcome. Still, they're pretty boring, because of lack of interactivity.
Fun Factor!: 1/2
Again, lack of interactivity, falling off the ATV too much, and inability to land tricks makes this game annoying, frustrating, and definitely not that fun. In fact, hardly any fun at all.
OVERALL: *
Nice concept, but poor execution. Good
reality, but so real that it ruins any fun. Big tracks, but lack of
interactive environments. I've said
these things before, and now I say them again. It's not worth buying, although
a $20 price is tempting. I'd only recommend it for a one-night rent for
$5 or less, and that's it. Otherwise, skip it!
