Platform: Game Boy Advance
Genre: Strategy
I believe that this game came out for at least one other system... but I'm not quite sure. I saw a commercial and remembered that the graphics were better, but that's it. In any case, I'll only be reviewing the GBC version.
Storyline: Evil Ogel has created some machine that brainwashes people into becoming his slaves. You have to guide the Alpha Team members through the levels in order to thwart his plan.
There are some directional pads to help you; if an Alpha Team member walks into one they'll change course to the direction that the pad is pointing to. There are also things like stairs that allow you to make them move to higher platforms. Basically the goal of each level is to somehow trigger a door-opening mechanism (though there are sometimes more than one), so you can progress to the next level.
This will be out of 5 stars.
Graphics: ** 1/2
Woah boy! Where did all of the good graphics go? Game Boy Colors are capable of pretty good graphics... why didn't they USE them? You can barely tell the difference between the different team members! I mean, it's not crucial, but I'd like to see some more variation. You can easily tell what's what, but I'd prefer if they made it look better.
Music and Sound: ** 1/2
Where's the good music? Where's the interesting sounds? They're gone, just like the graphics. I like some of the music, but it gets repetitive.
Difficulty: ****
Very difficult. I'm stuck on a level... and I can't figure out how to get past it! You have to look over the entire level to figure out how to set it up, and then you'll have to try it over and over... did I mention that there's a time limit?
Controls: **** 1/2
This game doesn't require quick reflexes, so I wouldn't worry too much about the controls. Now, what DOES cause a problem is...
Gameplay: * 1/2
This thing is too confusing! What does what? Do you hook those things up like that? You have to redo the whole Tutorial to find out! Why do they have to make this thing so darn complicated? WHY?!
Fun Factor!: ***
Well, I have to admit this game is pretty fun. But not especially fun, mind you. There really isn't too much originality in the levels, and they should've made it easier.
Replayability: ** 1/2
Since I haven't really won the game, I can't say for sure on the replayability factor. However, I'm pretty sure there isn't much else to do after you win. Of course, I haven't won, so it might have opened up some new game option, which is why I increased the score SLIGHTLY. You know what that means. Uh oh.
Overall: **
Sorry LEGO, but you really blundered this one up. If you decreased the difficulty and upped the graphics and music and made it easier to understand, I would've increased the grade of this. It was a good idea, but a bad execution. Hey, isn't this exactly what Crazy Packers Fan said in his Lego Racers Review? Looks like LEGO didn't learn its lesson!
Don't get this unless you're a big fan of both strategy games along with being a fan of LEGOs. This really isn't a great game, and it would be worth only maybe $10 or less. This is a good game to skip, so get something else.
