Mario and Wario Review

By Simon

Scoring Bote: The usual scoring system of 1-10, 1 being rubbish, 10 being brilliant.

Story: 7

I'm not really sure of the story, although I'll try to explain what happens the best I can. Before you start a level you select a character (Mario, Yoshi, or Peach) and then select the world you wish to go to. Before you start, Wario flies over on his plane and drops a bucket (or something else) on your character's head. Due to the blindness, the character can't see and must be guided towards Luigi, who can remove the bucket, by Wanda the fairy. You control Wanda with a SNES mouse and must use her to zap away baddies, zap in blocks, and turn your character around.

Graphics: 6

I thought Wario and his plane looked okay, but everything else looked rather bad. Mario and Luigi looked like the Mario Kart graphics, Peach looked weird, and so did Yoshi.

Music: 5

To say the least, the music of this game stinks. The background music sounds too wierd and every level just seems to sound the same. It has a decent variation (each world has a different track, and there's a bonus stage at the  end of each world which has it's own track), saving it from getting a 1.

Characters: 6.5

There are three playable characters and Wanda, which give around 5 of that mark. There's also Luigi and Wario, and some bad guys. This time Pidgit's the "Goomba" and can be defeated with a single zap. There's bats which attack in large groups, fireballs which you can only make smaller, and cannons which you can only turn around. The number of minions lowers the score.

Wanda: While there are three different playable characters, you really control Wanda, who guides your chosen character around and zaps away baddies.

Peach: The best character for beginners, Peach is slow, which means she'll have a hard time falling into spikes and gives you time to zap in lots of blocks, but in later levels you'll be worrying about the time.

Mario: Mario, as usual, gets the average grade. He's not too fast and he's not too slow.

Yoshi: As you've probably guessed, Yoshi is the fastest character, making him an excellent choice for experts.

Luigi: The neglected plumber waits at the end of every level to remove the bucket from you character's head.

Wario: The strange relative of Mario and Luigi drops a bucket (or something else) on Mario, Yoshi, or Peach's head. In the bonus stage you get to hit him lots of times on the head to rack up points.

Items: 4

There are hardly any items in the game, but here's what they are:

Mushroom: Increases the time remaining.

1-Up: Gives you an extra life (duh).

Starman: Four of these are found in every level bar but the ones in the first world. Find all four for an extra life.

Coins: 100 of these gives you an extra life.

Gameplay: 8

The game can be fun to play at times. You control Wanda (with your mouse) and use her to guide your character to the end of the level. It's quite simple, but fun nevertheless.

Lifespan: 9

There are eighth worlds to start with, each with ten levels; a ninth world appears after that, and a tenth one after that. After that, the extra world appears (which I have not done yet as world extra-10 is hard). I assume that the game is done after this. The annoying thing is, unless you're playing this thing on an emulator, you'll have to do all this in one day. Why? Because there's no save system!

Replayability: 3

I have not seen anything to come back too once you've done the extra world (although something may be unlocked).

Frustration Factor: 9

Do you get angry easily? Then don't play this! If you get gameover it's back to the start of the world; while understandable, it's VERY annoying. There's also no save system, so when you get to world extra-10 and have to go to bed, you have to do it all over again. How fun!

Fun Factor!: 7

While the frustration factor is greater than the fun factor, the game is still fun to play.

My Recommendation: Don't get this unless you're a big Mario fan, or if you want to try something original.
