Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (GBC) Review

By Dane Petersen

Today, I’m doing a Review on the first (and only) Harry Potter game for Game Boy Color. It is an RPG, unlike the other HP games. My Review will again be on a 1 - 5 star scale.

Story: ***

The story is modeled after the book, with a few changes, such as some senes that weren’t in the book, llike Harry going back to Diagon Alley to complete an assignment. Unfortunatly, the game doesn’t mention all that stuff about Harry being the only person who survived an evil curse, the Dursleys, etc., because it assumes you have already read the book.

Graphics: ***

Just plain graphics. Nothing special.

Items: ****

There are a lot of items in this game. Some are useless, some are valable. You can collect Wizard Cards. You can also mix potions provided you have the proper cauldron and ingredients. Plus, you can equip Harry with stuff to make him stronger.

Control: *****

It’s really simple. A is check stuff, B has no use, Start is pause (duh), Control Pad is move (again, duh), and Select is to get an idea of where you are. But, in most RPGs, the character’s walking speed is slooooooow, and this game is no exception.

Faithfulness to the Book: ****

Very much of this game is like the book. Many of the lines of dialogue are the same, with a few touches. Unfortunately, most of the spells weren’t in the book, as are some of the scenarios like collect the potion ingredients for Snape, chase the owl on your broom, etc., but other than that it’s a lot like the book.

Quiddich: *

There ain’t no quiddich in this game! (Gasp!) All there is is a few broom-racing mini-games!

Mini-games: ***

There are seven mini-games in all. Wizard Card concentration, chase Malfoy on your broom, owl chase, learning the wingardium leviosa spell, catch Norbert, catch the key, and mix the potion. I would have given it a better score if the chase Malfoy, owl chase, and catch Norbert mini-games weren’t all the same except for different graphics.

Overall: ****

This game is a cool game. Unfortunately, it’s kinda easy. You should rent this game or, if you’re a really big Harry Potter fan, buy it.
