Scoring Note: All scores are marked out of 10.
Story: 8
The story's the same as it was in Super Mario Bros. 2. Mario finds himself walking up a staircase and a voice tells him about a strange world called "Sub-con", the world of dreams, and how it has been taken over by the evil Wart, who really hates vegetables. Mario wakes up and finds out it was a dream. The next day Mario and his friends are having a picnic and Mario spots a door that looks just like the one in his dream. He and his friends enter it and find themselves in the troubled land of Sub-con. Well it's more intresting than a normal Mario story.
Graphics: 7
The graphics are an improvement over the SNES, but now other GBA games like Golden Sun make this game's graphics look bad. However, I still like how it looks and I think it looks better than Super Mario Advance 2.
Music: 4
I gave a 4 because there's a pretty good overworld theme. Unfortunately everything else,to say the least, stinks. I nominate the underworld and boss theme for being worst ever underworld and boss themes (and probably the underworld one is the worst song ever).
Characters: 9
There are four playable characters, which is always good, and a whole horde of enemies. Here is a list of the main characters:
Mario: Mario is (as usual) the average Joe (although it gives him four stars for everything, it's exaggerated). Mario has decent speed and jumping power although these will decrease if he is holding something.
Luigi: Luigi is the best jumper in the game, although he's a little slow and his speed and jumping power will decrease more than Mario's if Luigi is holding something.
Toad: Toad is the fastest character in the game and is also the worst jumper in the game, but these stats will not decrease at all even if Toad is holding a Giant Veggie.
Peach: While Peach's stats are marked very low she is probably the best character in the game due to her floating abbility.
Wart: The evil frog who hates vegetables has taken over Sub-con. Can you stop him?
Items: 8
While there isn't as many items as in Super Mario bros. 3, there's still quite a lot of items. From vegetables to Koopa Shells, from Pow Blocks to Hearts, there's quite a lot, and probably more than in Super Mario World.
Gameplay: 7
The game plays differently from most Mario games, as this time by jumping on enemies you just stand on their head so you must throw vegetables or other enemies at them. I think the game plays reasonably well and was a good idea.
Lifespan: 8
It takes quite a while to get to Wart and after that there's still the Yoshi Egg Challenge, and completing this isn't easy.
Replayability: 6
Like I said, once you've finished there's still the Yoshi Egg Challenge and after that there's the 2 player mode. I just wish you could team up with only one cartridge.
Frustration Factor: 3
It's nice how you can save at the end of every level. In fact, the only real frustrating thing in the game is the music.
Fun Factor!: 7
The game is fun to play, although I like normal Mario action better.
Changes: 7
Compared to Super Mario Advance 2, this has quite a lot of changes. There are two new enemies, a new boss, characters speak, and Hearts are more plentiful but you start the level with only one.
Mario Bros.: 7
I thought that Mario Bros. was quite a good game. While 1-player mode can get a little boring, the two 2-player modes should keep you occupied.
Overall: 8
This is definately a good game and is Super Mario Bros. 2 at its best.
My Recommendation: While I wouldn't put it at the top of my list, this is definately a game worth looking at. If you've got any spare money then buy it.
