Super Mario Brothers 1 Review

By Arim

The Mario 1 I'll be reviewing is from the Super Mario All-Stars game for the SNES because I don't have the original. Ah, I don't even have a working NES! X( Bah, it's bound to have some differences from the original, but it can't be THAT different. Can it?

The game will be reviewed on a 0 to 10 scale. Should I say 0 is horrendous and 10 is excellent?

Story: 4

Just the basic story. Bowser kidnaps Toadstool and Mario has to save her. Not much to add.

Graphics: 6

These graphics aren't completely bad, just not really good either. I don't have any real complaints about the graphics; everything is fine. Relatively.

Sound: 8

This surprisingly has really good sound. The sound effects are very well done and I like all the music. Sure there's not much variety in the music, but I sure love that Bowser battle theme. I never get to hear it that much since you have to beat Bowser fast, but I do get to listen to it in LL. :)

Characters: 8

All the good old original baddies are here, including those Hammer Bros we all know and hate. At least I do.
You can use both Mario and Luigi in 2-player mode. Oh, Bowser looks really good too.

Length: 2 1/2

Alright, this is another of those games that if you're really good at it, you can beat in a few hours. I guess the length was pretty good for the time of its release, but in this time, the length is mediocre.

Secrets: 6

This has some good secrets, like warp pipes to other worlds, hidden Mushrooms, and hidden 1-Ups. I don't know about the 1-Ups, but I could only find one. I THINK it was in world 7-3, but I'm not sure.

Difficulty: 9

Is it me, or were games back then MUCH harder than they are now? Yes, this game is incredibly hard. But
what really frustrates me is the fact that if you lose your five lives you have to start from the very beginning
of the world. That stupid start from beginning of the world thing is keeping me from beating world 8-4. X(

Controls: 9

Nice controls, sometimes jumping is a bit difficult, but that's it. As always, Mario is easy to control.

Replayability: This game is so much fun that you'll love to play it again. After the second time, you PROBABLY would want to play it again, and after that.

Fun Factor!: 9

Wow, I don't know why, but this is an incredibly fun game to play. I felt like plugging up my dust-filled SNES just to play this game again.

Overall: 7

Ok, from all the categories, the overall isn't so exaggeratedly good, but keep in mind that I'm (unfortunately) spoiled by new games these days. Nevertheless this game is one of the greats, a true classic. Really, this game is so good right now, imagine how good people might have seen it back then.

Recommendation: If you can find it, or Super Mario All-Stars (even better), and you enjoy side-scrolling
games, this is a great game to have. I mean it, it's a really good game. But hey, it's so good that I'm sure most of you already have it, or at least have played it.
