This SMB3 game that I'll review is also from Super Mario All-Stars. I don't think it has that many differences from the NES version, except for those lame new names they gave to each land except Grass Land. I mean, The Sky? What kind of a name is that?! Down with the SNES names! Boo!
Anyway, the game will be reviewed on a 0 to 10 scale. Should I say 0 is atrocious and 10 is excellent?
Story: 5
Same old, same old. You still have to
save the princess from Bowser's clutches. I gave one point more here than
in SMB1 because SMB3 doesn't have that stupid "our princess is in another
castle" business. You have to save seven kings first from their awful fate
and AFTER you save the seventh king Toadstool gets
kidnapped.
Graphics: 9
Nice graphics there. Everything looks
so good for a NES game. You just gotta LOVE the way the Koopalings
look. I like the way Lemmy, Roy, and
Ludwig look. I have a small complaint that the backgrounds sometimes don't
go well with the levels. I mean, pyramids in Pipe Land? PLEASE.
Sound: 9 1/2
I really love the music in this game.
All the music is just so darn good, except maybe the Ice Land theme,
which after listening to it for more
than five minutes gets really annoying. All the sound effects are really
good, no complaints I can think of there.
Characters: 9
Whoa, this has some good characters,
Mario, Luigi, Bowser, and Peach- er, Toadstool. But the greatest
ones of all, the Koopalings, are there
too. All the enemies are really good too, from the Goombas to the Sledge
Brothers.
Length: 6
This game is huge, compared to other
NES games of course. Still, it's not that long nowadays. Probably
only take you a couple of hours to
beat. Maybe three, maybe five.
Secrets: 8
Let's see, there's those rocks that
you can bash with Hammers to gain access to secret Toad Houses, the
White Toad House, that cool coin ship,
hidden 1-Up blocks as well as hidden suits, yada yada. Anyway, this game
has its fair share of secrets. I'd say it has more than the other SMBs.
Items: 9
Ok, I've never included this in an action side-scrolling game, but it's just that this one has so many great items. I don't know why it wasn't carried on to SMW. Come on, who doesn't celebrate when they get a Hammer Brother suit? I took off one point because of those STUPID Warp Whistles that make you skip worlds.
Difficulty: 6
A very good amount of difficulty. Plus,
you can get a whole bunch of lives. Not one Koopaling defeated me,
except that dumb one Roy, who killed
me once. It's challenging but not horribly difficult. Of course, this is
only if you go through all the levels and not if you use those STUPID Warp
Whistles. Who invented those DUMB things anyway?
Controls: 9 1/2
Ah, the perfect controls. Everything
from the prequels is perfected. Mario's jumping is perfect this time, and
hey, my first perfect score. Wait... trying to think of something to complain
about... oh yeah, before you go to a level, sometimes you accidentally
use an item you don't want to use. Like me, I accidentally used a
STUPID Warp Whistle in Pipe Land, and
I had to reset the game and start over from the start of Pipe Land. So
there, I took off half a point. Hehe, I'm evil.
Bonus: 8
Ooh, there is that match the cards game
to get extra items and sometimes coins as well as lives and that
one, lining up the pictures to get
extra lives.
Replayability: 9
This game is so good, many will want
to play again and again, maybe to find the things that they missed, or
maybe just to see the Koopalings again.
Fun Factor!: 10
Alright, I knew this had to come sooner or later, and regrettably, I can't help but give it my first perfect score. This game is plainly just too much fun. It really deserves a 10. The real fun comes from beating every single level to see each of the Koopalings and never using Jugem's Cloud or that STUPID Warp Whistle. And although I want to be evil and take off half a point, I can't. :(
Overall: 8 1/2
This game has got to be the greatest
NES game of all time, it just has to. No NES game was ever this good
in every single category, and never
will be. What else can I say, It's great.
Recommendation: Buy this game if you
can find it! You'll be missing out on the best NES game ever if you
don't. I recommend buying Mario All-Stars
to play it because it's a bit easier to find. And if you find a version
that doesn't have the Warp Whistles, buy that one. (Alright, I know a version
like that doesn't exist.) Oh, and if you find any codes to nullify
the effects of the Warp Whistles use those. :)
