SpongeBob SquarePants: SuperSponge Review

By Misty Koopa

There are three versions of this game, PlayStation, computer, and GBA. I have the GBA versions and all I know about the others is that PS has better graphics and may be slightly longer. The GBA version of this game is scored on a scale of 10.

It's Patrick's birthday in Bikini Bottom and SpongeBob is thinking of the perfect gift, an autograph from their favorite superheroes, Mermaid Man and Barnicle Boy (yup, them old peoples). When he arrives, though, they want him to prove his superhero potential by having him run some errands. But... how far will SpongeBob go for his friend?

Graphics: 6

They're pretty much NES style, SNES maybe, but they're not a whole lot to look at, and it's a bit hard to see. They are pretty true to the show, though, like the backgrounds. In the game perspective, everything is normal sized, just smaller on the screen. What I don't get is why all the goal items and healing items are as big, or bigger, than SpongeBob.

Music: 7

Pretty true to the show again, I think. Some of the music repeats twice though, but all the bosses have different music. I liked the Fish Hooks Park music. Lava Fields had good tunes too, but Rock Bottom wasn't too spooky... I wanted it to be spookier but it didn't even look spooky until the last level.

Difficulty: 2

All I have to say is this game is easy. The bosses and a few levels are a bit annoying, but that's all. I think a really little kid could beat this easy. THINK.

Length: 2

Only two hours long, three the first time. Very short. Plus the ending is dumb. There really isn't a point in not giving it away. The only thing that happens is SpongeBob gets the autograph and it shows some characters looking all happy in SpongeBob's living room saying "happy birthday" to Patrick, who isn't there. And why is Plankton there, looking all happy and huge? He's a bad guy!

Items: 3

Golden Spatula', Underwear, Krabby Patties, Salty Fries, Salty Shakes, and level items. Items that help you through are Jelly Fishing Net, Jelly Launcher, Jelly Fish, Jelly, Glove World Balloon, Bubble Wand, Bubbles, and Coral Blower. All of them true to the show? Of course!

Characters: 4

Sandy, Patrick, Mermaid Man, Barnicle Boy, Squidward, and Mr. Krabbs are the ones who appear and talk a little for tips and help during the beginning of some levels. Plankton and Gary appear a couple of times but don't actually speak. As for the bosses... true to the game except for the boss of the second and last levels. Bosses from the show are the worm (sorta), Jelly Fish Queen, and the Flying Dutchman.

True to the Show: 7

It's true to the show except for a few things. Barnicle Boy says you can only get a Kelp Bar in Bikini Bottom. If so, then WHY did SpongeBob go to Rock Bottom? And it says he uses Plankton's Time Machine. Only one is in the show and Squidward used it so it's his.

Controls: 3

Control pad moves you, A jumps, B uses Karate Jump or a item if one is held by SpongeBob, and R uses certain items like catching Jelly Fish, using the Bubble Wand...

Size: 3

Five worlds, four levels in each of them. They're not that long and have infinite time. Like I said, it only takes like two hours to beat this.

Secrets: 0

This gets nothing. Why? NO SECRETS!!! It makes me kinda upset because I wanted hidden levels and mini-games. I suppose there are some for PlayStation, but not on GBA.

Replay Value: 1

The only reason to replay this is if you're bored. Otherwise no reason the least bit.

Overall: 7 1/2

It's good, but it's short and the lack of characters, items, difficulty make this dull.

Recommendation: Unless you're REALLY bored, don't believe me, or a die-hard fan of SpongeBob, don't get this. Waste of money.
