Genre: Action
Platform: Game Boy Color
Super Mario Bros Deluxe, as you might guess, is an expanded SMB game. It has the original Super Mario Bros game, but with slightly better graphics. It also includes The Lost Levels (known in this game as Super Mario Bros. for Super Players). It also has a Challenge mode in Super Mario Bros, which is the same as the normal game except your goal for each level is to find a hidden Yoshi egg (a hidden block contains it, find all five Red Coins, and reach each level's target score.
There are also extra things, such as the hidden You Vs. Boo mode, along with an Album, Toy Box, and even a Vs. Mode allowing you to play against other people. As always, this will be 0-5 stars.
Graphics: ***
The graphics are clearly not phenomenal. Although it's a little better, I'd prefer to see more improvement over the original. Maybe not to the extent of Super Mario All-Stars, but something extra.
Sound and Music: *****
Who could ever forget the classic music in this game, repeated in many other Mario games? The outside music is especially good, and the rest is great, too.
Difficulty: ****
This would have gotten only a 3 out of 5 stars, but The Lost Levels upped it. That game is so hard! I think I may have stumbled upon the hardest feat of video game history: Win The Lost Levels without losing one life, and without taking ANY shortcuts. That's technically possible, but I don't think anyone has ever done it...
Controls: **** 1/2
C'mon, they're so easy. There are only
two buttons (excluding the directional pad) that affect gameplay, and
they're easy to use! A: Jump. B: Run/throw
fireball.
Levels: ****
Hey, these are the original levels that made Mario so famous. They can't be half bad (and they're not... they're bad all the way through. Just kidding!). It's got the classic Mario feel, repeated in Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario Land, Super Mario Land 2, Super Mario World, and some other games.
Characters: **** 1/2
This has all of the classic Mario characters.
This WOULD have gotten a perfect score if there were just a few
more... but hey, it's still a great
score! Not that this category really makes that much of a difference.
Concept: ****
Yes, the princess-rescuing has been
tried time and time again. However, this was the first game it ever was
in,
which is why it got 4 stars. If this
was the original SMB and not a remake of it, it would've gotten at least
4 1/2 stars, but hey, it's still good! Wait, didn't I say that about the
previous category?
Story: *
There is no story, except for Bowser kidnapping the Princess and Mario rescuing her. The expansions don't add anything to the storyline.
Bosses: *
There is only one boss, Bowser! Okay, the first seven are just disguised minions, but you know what I mean. I added half a star just because Bowser doesn't attack the same way each time, and the setup is a little different.
Replayability: ****
Hey, this has plenty of games, and good ones at that. Sure, Super Mario Bros for Super Players/The Lost Levels is more frustrating than fun, but it will provide you with some replayability. Not to mention trying to get everything for your Album...
Secrets: ****
Lots of things in this game are secrets. You Vs. Boo, SMB for Super Players, and some of the things in the Toy Box are secrets. There are others, also. I'd tell you all of them, but then they wouldn't be secrets anymore!
Fun Factor!: **** 1/2
This game is just plain fun. It provides me with enjoyment. Remember people, if this game weren't as successful as it was, some of your favorite Mario games might never have been created! Wait, let me take that back... they WOULDN'T have been created, period!
OVERALL: **** 1/2
This is a great game! When Nintendo tried to make a remake this time, they succeeded in making a good one. For a Game Boy Color, this is surely a triumph! An almost must-have for GBC/GBA owners who like Mario games! Why only the "almost"? Because it's only a remake, but hey, it's a GOOD remake!
