Star Wars: Episode I: Racer Review

By Lord Seth

Genre: Racing
Platform: GBC

I can't quite remember how I came into possession of this game, but I got it anyway. Basically, you race with those "Pods" or whatever they're supposed to be, like in Star Wars Episode I. You start out with only one Pod, but if you beat someone you get theirs. I don't know if it's like the N64 game of the same name, or if they're even related.

This, as always, is 0-5 stars.

Graphics: *

The graphics are plain not good! Not even the graphics when it shows the racers themselves are good! Yes, it's good enough to tell what's going on, but just not great.

Sound and Music: *** 1/2

I really liked the music! The sound wasn't bad, either. Unfortunately, there isn't music during the racing itself. This is where the game really excels. Now, THAT can't be good...

Difficulty: **** 1/2

Trust me, this is no Mario Kart game. It's tough, REALLY tough. The selection of different pod racers doesn't help you at all, especially because it's hard to just get them. Actually, the first pod you have is probably the best, making the rest of them seem pointless. Besides, it's hard to just race through it.

Controls: **** 1/2

I'll concede one thing, and that's that this game is pretty darn easy to control, even if it's hard to play. Then again, there are not too many buttons on a Game Boy Advance...

Levels: no stars

The levels are pretty much exactly the same, but with different turns. No variations, none whatsoever, unless you count that some are on different planets. They simply are neither original or different.

Concept: * 1/2

It would be nicer if it was a bit original. There is simply nothing that makes it unique. Sure, getting your opponent's pod racers is nice,  but why can't you take them apart and change things with YOUR pod racer
to customize it? Also, why does it have to be one-on-one? Why not multiple racers? The only reason it got such a high score in this category is because of the rumble feature, which you don't see too much.

Story: 1/2

There is no story, at least as far as I can tell. Since this is based on a movie with a storyline, I added 1/2 a star, though that really isn't much and it doesn't follow the movie.

Bosses: N/A

Technically there are no bosses, though someone COULD argue that EVERYONE's a boss. But if that's true, it still isn't applicable here because bosses are simply harder forms of normal enemies.

Replayability: *

Since it's so tough and boring that people might give up on it quickly, there wouldn't be many opportunities for replayability. As far as I know, there is really no replayability whatsoever, but just to give this game the benefit of the doubt, I increased the score a bit.

Secrets: no stars

As far as I know, there are no secrets. Maybe there are some levels that can be accessed after beating certain things, I don't really know.

Gameplay: 1/2

While the controls themselves are easy to use, the gameplay itself is frustrating. Suppose you try to turn. You'll CONTINUE moving in that direction, which is frustrating as you have to put it back to where you
want to be facing. In Mario Kart: Super Circuit, if you try to go in a certain direction for a short while, it'll make you go back to the direction you were going, but not in this one. It's very difficult to do it correctly. Add that to the fact it's pretty tough to stay on the track, and you've got bad gameplay.

Fun Factor!: 1/2

This may be fun at first, until you learn that the levels are practically all repeats. Also, it's too hard to be fun. It simply provides no satisfaction.

OVERALL: *

Possibly the worst game I have, I completely forgot about it until I glimpsed it again when searching through my games to see one I didn't like to review. It's a total, complete, utter waste of money. Don't buy it, PERIOD. It's worse than Pokémon Pinball. Am I making my point across? I'll repeat, do NOT get this game. It doesn't even follow the storyline of Star Wars, and is a bad game besides! The ONLY way I'd ever reccomend it is if you're both a big fan of Star Wars AND racing, and even then I wouldn't. Trust me, this is one game to pass on. It's boring, repetitive, and just plain bad.
