Super Mario Sunshine Review

By Misty Koopa

This game is rated on a 10-point scale.

Story: Mario, Princess Peach, and some Toads are headed to a tropical island in the southren sea. It looks great just from looking at the commercail! There are beautiful beachs, beautiful cliffs, rolling hills, a fishing harbor, and an amusement park. As they see the commerical again in the princess' private, pink plane, Mario begins to daydream about the food, and Toadsworth, Peach's butler, imagines himself in the roller coaster and sleeping under a tree. But while they're dreaming, Peach notices someone in the background. Even though it's a shadow, it resembles Mario carrying a stick. When they land, the plane skids to avoid paint-like goo on the runway, and the adventure begins. Mario has to clean up the island, stop the fake Shadow Mario, and recover the Shine Sprites, the island's source of power and light.

Levels: 7

This is the sequel to Super Mario 64, and that has 15 levels. This game only has 7. BUT, there's more to see and do in these levels. Plus, there are eight normal episodes, two hidden Shines (this game's Stars), and the 100-coin one. And I don't recall SM64 letting me ride a roller coaster, or go through a hotel, or relax in hot springs.

Graphics: 8

Mario isn't in as much detail as Super Smash Bros. Melee, but the surfaces shine at different angles, plus they're in great detail. The trees on the Piantas look very neat, and you can see the other levels in the background! Small islands near Delfino Plaza look like the background until you approach them.

Characters: 6

Mario, Peach, Toadsworth, other Toads, Piantas, Nokis, Yoshis, and that's all for good guys. The bad guys are Shadow Mario and some classic enemies, like Blooper and Piranha Plants. There are now new enemies under the bad guy catagory, like Petey Piranha and Gooper Blooper. I would've liked to see some of Mario's old friends return though...

Music: 7

*dances* Mario's old theme is remixed, and the levels have new, nifty tunes to fit the area. Fighting bad guys has good music, and a rare few enemies have different tunes. Plus in a level where you're chasing Shadow Mario, when you get far away the music fades and the normal tune returns, and when you get closer his music plays louder.

Difficulty: 4

It gets easy once you get the hang of it. FLUDD is hard to use when you start, and the camera angle makes me want to scream sometimes, but overall it's easy. You can pretty much access almost all the areas with, oh, 20-30 Shines or so. And you find out more about Shadow Mario with 10...

Size: 4 1/2

The levels have more to do, but they're short also. I wasn't happy with that. I wanted a nice, long, juicy game. It's actually shorter than Super Mario 64, and that's supposed to be 50 hours long.

Items: 2

There's fruit, and FLUDD, but that's pretty much it. Oh, and there's also Shadow Mario's stick thing. C'mon Nintendo, you can do better then that!

Replay Value: 9

You'll want to find everything in this game, like the ultra rare Blue Coins and the Shines, or just plain mess around with different quests. I like the Chain Chomp ones.

Fun Factor!: 9

Play in the amusement park, ride that roller coaster, run errands for Piantas, clean up Noki Bay, scare the living daylight outta people in the hotel... What this game lacks in some catagories, it makes up in this one. I mean, Mario has NEVER done stuff like this, except the errands in Paper Mario.

Overall: 7-8

Good game. Look over the few bad things, it's fun. There's a ton to do and see. I mean, it looks like you can even SWIM to the other levels.

Recommendation:

GET THIS!!! Or rent it or SOMETHING!!! Play it in a store if you must! While the game is short, it's good overall. Anyone who says this is a game for babies needs a smack in the face. While the title is misleading, I think deep inside you'll enjoy this.
