Mario Kart 64 Review

Scoring Note: This game will be graded on scale of 9, the number of points awarded for first place in a race.

Graphics: 8

The 3D graphics in this game look really good, but some things look a little polygonal. Nintendo did a great job but I can't give a perfect score.

Sound: 6

Although the music is fine, too many courses have the same music. I think the game is small enough so that each course can have its own special music. The sound effects are well done.

Story: 0

There is no story, which makes the game sort of seem useless since there is no goal except to win the race for yourself. It also leaves gamers to figure out why Mario and friends are racing with Bowser. Maybe that's a good thing...

Control: 9

I would hope that this is the case, as it would be difficult to play a racing game if you can't steer properly (hmm, maybe a good idea for a really tough game). Some of the heavyweights don't turn well, but that is part of their abilities, or in this case, their disabilities.

Terrain: 8

All of the courses are spread out over interesting areas. I don't think anything important is left out, but in order to get a perfect score Nintendo would have to lay off tracks like Luigi Raceway, which has no particular theme. It's just a road with Luigi's name by it.

Items: 8

Another almost perfect score here. The items are terrific, and it is fun to come from behind and win by using an item (it's also fun to win without an item). However, most of the items are from this game's predecessor. There should have been more completely new items.

Characters: 7

I can't complain about who is there, except maybe DK- since when does he get to be in all of Mario's extra games? But so many good characters didn't get in. I'm sure this game could have handled having more than eight racers, even if it means that not everyone races at the same time.

Gameplay: 8

It's fun to race the tracks. Nothing much to say here, except that I want the other racers to show their despair when you pass them.

Difficulty: 9

Nintendo did a good job in this category. The four cups are of increasing difficulty, and there are four speeds you can race in (one you have to earn), so practically all gamers will be able to find a level that is challenging but possible for them.

Replay Value: 9

Like most racing games, this is one that you'll want to play many times as long as you liked it the first time.

And finally…

Fun Factor!: 7

It's a very good game, and one that I never mind playing. But it can't stand up to many of Nintendo's other games, which are a joy to play the entire way through. This can get old.

Recommendation:

If you liked Super Mario Kart, this game is a must have. Most people who like racing games in general will also enjoy this game, but not those who want a good serious race. I suggest you get this game if you have some time you don't mind killing through simple pleasures, but if your time is precious or if you'd rather play a more serious or moving game, lay off this one.
