Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island

Yet another Review with a 0-4 star rating scale.

Graphics: ****

This game's graphic's are great. The graphics are colorful, and the backgrounds aren't half bad. Nice job here.

Sound/Music: ***1/2

The music of the game is nice, and the sounds are also okay, but both of them seem to have been tweaked down a little. Some sounds are also missing, but still, the music is above average. The castle music is stirring, and the cave music isn't bad, either.

Gameplay: ***

The GBA version of Yoshi's Island is somewhat slower than the SNES version, that's for sure. Morphing into a vehicle takes longer than you think. On the other hand, those logs you use to cross lava rivers (in 2-4 or 6-4) seem to go a lot faster, but the moving stone blocks in the same levels move slower. But anyway, other than that, the gameplay is okay. Getting 100% on a level can be harder for some levels, and easier for others. There are a lot of secrets in each level, too. Nice gameplay overall.

Diffuculty: **1/2

This game isn't too hard at all, really. Getting 100% in EVERY level in the game will take you a while, but the levels themselves aren't too hard. Even some secrets or extras can be easier than usual. There are many ways to earn 1-Ups, and you can possibly have 400+ lives when you get to World 6.

Controls: ****

The controls are simple to learn, really. A is jump (hold it do do a flutter jump), B is eat, R shoots an egg (there are two ways to shoot eggs, too), down in midair executes the Ground Pound, and Select shows you the Item/Stats screen.

Levels: ****

This game has 60 levels. It doesn't sound like much compared to games like SMB3 and SMW, but the levels are pretty large and there's a lot to explore. This includes 12 hidden level; six of them are brand new, and weren't in the SNES version. There are many different kinds of levels, too.

Mini-Games: ***

There are two kinds of mini-games: the ones where you challenge Bandit, and the "bonus challenge" ones. The Bandit ones are mainly based on skills. In this game, you can play them again and again. The bonus challenge mini-games are based all on luck usually and you'll usually earn an item or 1-Up if you win. Sometimes both!

Mario Bros.: no stars (obviously)

Hmm, this mode looks familiar. It looks like the same mode from Super Mario Advance 1 and 2!

Fun Factor!: ***1/2

This game is really fun! There are fun secrets, and don't forget the six new secret levels!

Overall: ****

If you've played the original Yoshi's Island and/or like Mario games, you'll like this game. It's a great game, one of the best Mario games around.
