Dr. Thomas Light, along with the help
of his partner Dr. Albert Wily, invents eight robots, Rock, Roll (get it),
Cut Man, Elec Man, Ice Man, Fire Man, Bomb Man, and Guts Man. All
is well until six of the robots (the ones which end in "Man") start causing
havoc throughout the world. Dr. Light quickly realizes that Dr. Wily is
behind this and converts Rock into a super strong robot; the great Mega
Man is born! Not the most original idea ever, but at least there isn't
any princess getting captured.
Graphics: 5
Nothing super at all, although it isn't
too bad for NES.
Music: 8
Some pretty decent tracks, both boss
tunes were good and so was Cut Man's stage. The rest wasn't too bad.
Characters: 8
Quite a lot of characters, but not as
many as in later games in the series. Here is a list of the characters:
Mega Man (Rock): Once Dr. Light's lab
assistant, when trouble arises, Rock (which explains why he's known as
Rock Man in Japan) volunteers to be modified into a more powerful robot
and from that day onward he's been known as Mega Man and stopped Wily nine
times. He uses his arm cannon for attacking.
Roll: Mega Man's sister who plays little
if any role in the game, she just appears in the ending.
Dr. Light: The inventor of the industrial
robots, Dr. Light also only appears in the ending.
Dr. Wily: Once Dr. Light's collegue,
Dr. Wily soon got jealous of Dr. Light's work, stole six of the robots,
and attempted to take over the world. He is the last boss, he usually hangs
out in his UFO. He attacks in a very large machine.
Cut Man: My favorite robot master in
this game (second all time next to Dust Man), he attacks with a boomerang
weapon which you gain from beating him.
Elec Man: Attacks with a weapon that
shoots three jolts of electricity, each going in different directions.
He is weak against the cutter weapon.
Ice Man: Has the second most annoying
stage in the game. Ice Man fires an ice block at you and is weak against
Elec Man's weapon (not Fire Man's supprisingly).
Fire Man: Strangely enough, this guys
weak against ice. He shoots a fireball which goes through several enemies
then disappears.
Bomb Man: As his name kind of suggests
this guy uses bombs for his weapons. He is weak agianst fire.
Guts Man: This big guy has the most
annoying stage in the game and is also the hardest robot master in the
game. He uses brute strength by picking up rocks and throwing them. He
doesn't like bombs.
Cyclops: The boss of Dr. Wily's fortress
stage 1, a famous face throughout the series appearing in MM 1, 3, 8, X5,
and Rock Man and Forte. He can dissolve into many blocks and move across
the screen.
Mega Man Clone: I like this guy! He
uses the same weapon MM's equiped with and is rather lethal with them.
Items: 7
I suppose the guns are SORT of like
items, although there aren't many pick-ups.
Lifespan: 5
Six robot masters make this probably
the shortest MM game, it doesn't take long to complete.
Replayability: 3
There is one secret gun in the game,
and you need it to complete the game, how stupid? There is no reason at
all to come back to this.
Gameplay: 9
I LOVE the way MM games play. For those
not familiar I shall explain. At the start you choose a level (represented
by a robot master's face) and you must work your way through the level
and defeat the robot master. Once all six are beaten you can go to Dr.
Wily's fortress, which is made up of four levels.
Frustration Factor: 6
What makes the game most frustrating
is that there is no save system or passwords. Fortunately the game is short
so completing it in one sitting shouldn't be TOO taxing.
Fun Factor!: 8
The game is, like all MM games, very
fun. While some things do get annoying the fun overweighs the frustration.
Overall: 8
While the lifespan and replay abiltiy
bring the game down, the gameplay makes up for this.
My Recommendation: Hmm, a REALLY hard
game to find, however should you happen to own a NES and come across the
game, add it to your collection, you won't regret it. Alternatively, if
you own a Genesis you could buy "Mega Man- the Wily Wars", which features
the blue bomber's first three games on one cartridge. I don't know if it
was released outside of Japan though.
