Mario Party 4 Review

By Arim

Mario Party 4 is the fourth installment in the Mario Party series (hence the name), which came out for the GCN. I'll stop introducing it now because I know all Mario fans already know about it.

I'll review on a scale of 1 to 10. 1 is the embodiment of evil and 10 is excellent. Oh, and I'll start using decimals since they're cool.

Graphics: 9.25

The graphics in this one are excellent, they're a great improvement over the other parties. That was expected since the game is on a more powerful system. However, the graphics are not quite as good as SMS.

Sound: 9.5

The sound was great, the classic cheerful music is here, and also the classic WAH!, I'm the winner!, I lost!, etc. are all here.

Characters: 4

What, no new characters?! Oh well, at least now you can play as Daisy and Waluigi in Story Mode.

Mini-Games: 7.5

The mini-games are better than in the other Parties, in my opinion. Some are more complicated than your simple button mashing ones. However, I really wish there were more mini-games. Mario Party 3 had 70 mini-games and this has only 50! Come on, the GCN has way more power than that, you lazy people!

Boards: 5.5

The boards are rather big and fun with many different paths. But, again, I wish there were more than six boards. And yet again, the GCN would have been capable of many, many more boards. One of the biggest problems I have with this game (and the other Parties) are the Fortune Spaces. More often than not, you'll end up giving up all your hard-earned Stars and coins to some loser. And sometimes, even lose the game because of it.

Game Modes: Next, I'll discuss the game modes.

Party Mode: 9

This is the heart of the game. Here you get to choose any board you want and compete against three other players (which are either human or computer-controlled) to get the most Stars and coins. Get together with three more people and ditch the COMs for the best party experience.

Story Mode: 6

This is the normal game only it's for one player and you earn a present each time you beat a board. This mode isn't bad, but without other people it just isn't as fun. It gets old quickly.

Mini-Game Mode: 9.5

In this mode you get to play against others and try to win the most mini-games. In my opinion it's slightly better than Party Mode since you get to play the mini-games (which are the good part of the normal mode) but without those pesky Fortune Spaces ruining your day.

Extra Room: The extra room is where you can play extra mini games that don't appear in the normal modes. The Extra Room is divided into three parts which I will review separately.

Thwomp's Backroom Ball is divided into three parts.

Mega Board Mayhem and Mini Board Mad Dash: 0

This mode is comprised of two lame boards that lack the mini-games. Now why would somebody want to play that?

Panel Panic: 1.5

This is a lame mini-game whose outcome is decided purely by luck, and since I don't like luck mini-games this one wasn't that great to me.

Challenge Booksquirm: 8.5

This is a variation of the mini-game Booksquirm, the difference is that you continue playing until you are squashed, not until the others lose. The pages fall faster and faster, making it more frantic. A very good game, except that it can get impossibly difficult.

Whomp's Basement Brouhaha: 8

This mode is comprised of several one-player mini-games that aren't available in the normal modes. Most
of them are pretty good, but it would have been better if they could be played with other people as well.

Ztar's Volly Folly:  8.5

This game is quite fun! It's a two against two game of beach volleyball. However, it only allows for two human players against two COMS. It would have been a good idea allow four human-controlled players.

Replayability: 9

The game has high replayability written all over it. Like all good multiplayer games, this one is high in the replayability area.

Fun Factor!: 9

Granted, this game is a lot of fun. with other people, mind you. The concept is getting old, but it's always fun.

Overall: 8.5

I recommend you get this game if you don't have the other Parties or if you like the others but don't want to use your N64 every time you feel like playing it. The game has its flaws, but it's a good multiplayer game nevertheless.
