Metroid Prime Review

By Misty Koopa

System: GameCube
Release Date: ... Uh, lemme think... Oh yeah,  November 18, 2002!
Rating: T for Teen (I'll explain more under Realism)

Story: The bird-like race of the Chozo have been successfully living without technology for many years on a planet called Tallon IV. It was a peaceful planet with no worries. And that's when it happened. 20 years ago, a meteor from outer space crashed into Tallon IV. It wouldn't have been so bad, except for one MAJOR problem: the moment it crashed it released Phazon, a deadly, cancerous poison. Most lifeforms died from the Phazon right away; others got the dreaded Phazon Madness, which makes the person with it horribly ill and in pain with a twisted mind until death. However, some did not die from the Phazon but mutated and grew stronger. Evil.

The Chozo slowly began to die. As a last attempt, they contained the source of the Phazon and sealed away the majority of the impact site. It is unknown if the last of the Chozo died or not, maybe the remaining of the healthiest Chozo left for a new planet to live. But one thing is for certain: there are no living Chozo on Tallon IV anymore.

20 years later, Samus Aran defeated the Space Pirates at Zebes. What was left of the ruthless Pirates split into two parties and tried to reform. They began to search for a great power and evil to help them regain strength. It wasn't long until they found Tallon IV and its Phazon. They set up two bases on Tallon IV, began to mine the stuff, and fused it to make stronger Pirates and Metroids. Unfortunitly for them, Samus has tracked them down. And that's when the game begins!

This game is rated on a scale of 10.

Controls: 10

It's a snap to learn them. A fires a weapon, B lets you jump, R lets you lock on, the control pad lets you switch visors, and the C Stick lets you switch Beams. It sounds confusing, but when you get the hang of it they're perfect. You don't think about controls, just blasting the enemy to pieces.

Graphics: 10

Luigi's Mansion, the show of graphics, is NOTHING next to this! They're GORGEOUS! The majority of the levels are beautiful. When you're not blasting everyone to bits, look at the pretty graphics. I did. I spent most of my time in Phendrana Drifts in awe. That place is beautiful...

Realism: 10

Wow, another perfect score, and with good reason. When I play this game, I FEEL like Samus, not a Koopa who is sitting on her butt doing nothing. (Ah, but I AM doing something!) And this is where the T rating comes in. Lessee now, you can set enemies on fire, make enemies scream in pain, run through a tunnel and get lizard guts all on your visor... Yeah, I think I made my point. But it still is realistic without that stuff. Jump out of the water or lava and you'll see it drip off the visor. Go through steam or under a waterfall and the visor'll fog up. Yeah, basically the graphics and realism are perfect.

Music: 10

Ok, too many perfect scores here. But the music in this game, it sets up such an atmoshpere. You'll walk into a room and hear the music and decide what the room'll be like. A boss battle, mini-boss battle, dangerous, ect. Plus the other music is beatiful, like the Chozo Temple hovering over the impact crater. And Phendrana Drifts... Phendrana Drifts is the Nimbus Land of the Metroid series. I'm not sure which is prettier, even.

Loading Time: 7

Oh my gosh, a flaw! Yeah, it's a flaw alright. Some rooms take a long time to load. Usually it takes a second for the door to open when you hit it with the required beam. Some rooms can take a minute or more to load. Plus, when the game loads it takes a few minutes too. But it's worth it.

Storyline: 8

Meh, it lost two points thanks to how it is set up. The story is in a lot of pieces. What you see under the Story part of this Review is basically what is in the booklet. You learn the rest of the story and other important info as you go along. You'll definitely have to reread and go through everything more then once to piece everything together fully.

Characters: 10

You get the Metroids, Samus, the old favorite- Ridley, and Space Pirates. But there are a lot of new bosses and such too. On that, my lips are sealed!

Difficulty: 10

Hard game. You don't fight any difficult bosses right away, but the puzzles and stuff are confusing. The final bosses ARE hard. This one really hard Pirate, Ridley himself, and the- wait... Me shut up now! No spoilers from this Koopa! It's long too. Finally, a game I didn't beat in a week. Mom and Dad are happy about that! :D

Overall: 10

Great game. Except for those flaws, it's PERFECT!

Recommendation: What are you waiting for? Get this game! It's great! A must have for Metroid fans! And if you already have it, well, what are doing reading this? Go play it already!
