What is it I'm talking about? Nintendo
remade remakes. That's right, Game & Watch Gallery 4 is part-remake,
not just of the original Game &
Watch games but of other Game & Watch Galleries! There are at least
five or
six of the total of eleven games that
were in other Game & Watch Galleries, maybe more. This game has a couple
of new games in it, while the others are games that were in the other Game
& Watch Galleries, just thrown into this Game Boy Advance game.
I know I don't have to say this, but this game is reviewed on a 0-4 star scale. I feel embarrassed writing this Review, knowing that this game was part-remake when I bought it and that I just wanted to spend my remaining money... but on to the Review we go!
Graphics: *
Yippee! This game blows me away with its excellent graphics! Okay, so you know I'm being sarcastic. I'll be honest: the graphics stink. They don't matter, they don't play any part in this game, but they stink. That's the fact.
Sound: *
Any game with any type of good music
will get at least one song stuck in the back of my head that I'll never
forget. Some games have an entire library
of songs I can hum. I can remember one single song from G&W
Gallery 4, and that's it (DK Jr.'s
first level). I'd rather listen to Flat Zone's theme song (which I think
is underrated) in Super Smash Bros. Melee. The songs are flat-out boring.
Difficulty: *laughing*
I'm sorry... I don't want to turn this Review into a joke, but the fact of the matter is, both Boxing and Donkey Kong 3 can be beaten (i.e., getting five stars) half-asleep, as I've done it with both. I'll seriously be dozing off, just tapping the B button in Boxing or the left and right buttons in Donkey Kong 3. Other games can be quite a challenge, however. Due to this, I cannot give this game a real difficulty rating, because some games are just plain jokes, while others actually are real.
Characters: ***1/2
This category is becoming less and less important as time goes on, especially since this game has a good selection of characters but they mean nothing to the gameplay. Donkey Kong is here, Mario is likewise, Peach, Yoshi, Toad, Luigi, Waluigi, and even Wiggler make appearances. Of course Mr. Game & Watch is here, too, but that goes without saying.
Controls: ****
The controls, as always, are excellent for a Game & Watch Gallery game. So excellent, in fact, that you don't even have to look at the screen to control your characters in certain games. Of course, maybe that has less to do with the controls and more with the gameplay.
Gameplay: Of course I once again refuse
to be short and not give you a real feel of the gameplay of this game by
shoving it all into one little package. I'll split the gameplay ratings
up, game by game. (Note: I have left the hidden games out, in order to
keep them secret, though you can probably figure them out easily by
now.)
Donkey Kong 3:
Modern: *
Classic: no stars
After a minute or so, you can memorize
the timing of the Classic mode, which you can then easily beat
without even being fully awake. As
for the Modern mode, at least you have to be awake in order to win.
Boxing:
Modern: *
Classic: no stars
See Donkey Kong 3. The same description goes for this, word for word.
Rain Shower:
Modern: **
Classic: *
For a few moments, I was actually enjoying
the Modern mode of Rain Shower. It's a little better than some
other games because it requires a little
bit of thinking. Classic mode is way too confusing, however.
Fire:
Modern: ***
Classic: **1/2
The Modern mode of this game actually
gives you a challenge, and a fun little game. The Classic mode is
easier in some ways, as all the people
fall and rise at the same speed, but it is also harder in other ways, as
more people appear than in the Modern mode.
Mario's Cement Factory:
Modern: ***
Classic: **
The Modern mode of this game is one
of the better ones in this game, as it actually can be quite fun after
a
while. As for the Classic mode, it
isn't bad, but maybe a little too hard with the elevators.
Donkey Kong Jr.:
Modern: ***1/2
Classic: no stars
Was this the best Modern mode in G&W Gallery 3, too? Maybe it was, and it certainly is in this game. It's as fun as it will get in this game (and the first level's music is all right, the only song I like in this game). As for Classic, it's so boring, annoying, and confusing. It's hard to get past the first level. It's no fun at all.
Before I forget, I must mention that
Mario Bros. is in this game, as one of the secrets. Try to hold in your
excitement. I know it's difficult.
Replayability: 1/2
Put it this way: I don't think I've played this game since Christmas vacation ended. That pretty much sums it up all right there.
Fun Factor!: 1/2
When I can be nodding off, starting
to dream about next college football season, and then wake up and see
that yes, I am still in the game, on
Round 25 in Boxing, I don't think the game I am playing is very fun.
OVERALL: 1/2
I'm still upset that Nintendo insulted our intelligence by remaking remakes. I have nothing against remaking the old Game & Watch games, but just importing five or six of them to the GBA while adding a couple of sleepers? That's what I call a poor game. It's pretty safe to say that if you own at least one of the original Game & Watch Galleries, this one's not worth buying. The only way I'd considering buying this one is if you don't own any of the original Game & Watch Galleries and have never played any of them even in stores before (that way, you can still get your five minutes of fun out of Boxing and DK3). Otherwise, there are lots of better ways of spending $30... I'd even rather spend it on tickets to a game of my least favorite college football team, Pitt... and that's the ultimate insult to Game & Watch Gallery 4.
