Luigi's Mansion Review

By Ludwig 222

Well, well, well. Here's my Review for Luigi's Mansion, the first Mario game to come out for the GameCube, and one that I've had ever since it came out. Nowadays I've decided to make a Review for it, and here it is! It's also on a scale of 0-4 stars, obviously.

Graphics: ****

Great graphics! Luigi looks good, the ghosts look 3D, and all the rooms look real. The graphics look even better than Super Mario Sunshine's. Very nice job here.

Sound/Music: ***1/2

The sound effects are great, with Luigi having a nice voice and the ghosts' and Boos' sound effects being nice also. The music in the game is above-average, with the regular hallway theme and the outside theme being pretty nice, and the boss battle theme being pretty good, too. I also like the "sucking up a ghost" theme and the one where you fight the Shy Guy Ghosts in the Ball Room. Why not give it four stars then? When you light up a room there is no music except for Luigi's whistling of the main theme song, which is pretty okay. Most of the dark rooms don't have much music either except ghosts humming in the background and Luigi scaredly humming the main theme song. But, overall, I like the music in the game.

Difficulty: *1/2

Not all that much of a difficult game, at least if your used to it. Sure, you might struggle a little in some harder rooms, a little bit more during the blackout part, and a tiny bit more on some of the portrait ghosts, but overall this game can be pretty easy.

Story: **1/2

The storyline is pretty decent, for a Mario game. Luigi goes to a mansion to find Mario, who isn't there, then finds Professor E. Gadd, who gives him a vacuum, a Gameboy Horror, and (later on) a Boo Radar. Then Luigi sets out to go through the mansion and find Mario. Again, it's pretty decent for a storyline, I must say.

Characters: 1/2

One thing this game is lacking: characters. Basically, there's Luigi, Mario, Toad, Professor E. Gadd, and all the ghosts and Boos and King Boo. That's not a lot, right? Right. A lot of these characters aren't common Mario characters, and there are only two common enemies of Mario (Shy Guy and Boo) in the game. At least, there are many different ghosts, but that doesn't help the score all that much.

Conrols: ***1/2

The controls are good enough. A is talk/open door/knock on something, B turns your flashlight on and off in dark rooms, Control Stick is move (uh, what else?), C-Stick turns Luigi around and controls the angle your vacuum is pointed (which may be a little hard to control, since the directions are reversed), R is vaccum, L is element (lightly press it for a little bit of the element, hold it down for a lot and maybe even to shoot a projectile of your element!), X shows view from your Gameboy Horror (press A on an object to show Luigi's comments for it), Y shows you the floor map, and Z shows your inventory (you can also read a little bit about the portrait ghosts you captured). It may look like a lot of controls, but they are all pretty easy to master.

Items: ****

The items in this game are all pretty fun. There's Luigi's vacuum and flashlight, the three element medals (use it on ghosts if you don't want to use your vacuum), the Gameboy Horror, all the different kinds of money, small, medium, and large Hearts (healing 10, 20, and 50 HP respectively), a Poison Mushroom (making Luigi small, unable to open doors and use his vacuum), and Mario's five lost items. These items are all pretty fun to use, so it gets a good rating.

Rooms: ****

There are a lot of rooms, with more than you can think of! The mansion has four floors and there's a lot to explore on each. There may not be something normal like a pool or TV, but that's too minor to take points off of.

Replayability: *

Really, after beating the game, there isn't much else to do other than the Hidden Mansion and trying to get a lot of money. In fact, you might not play it again (or at least for a while) after going through it 1-3 times.

Fun Factor!: ***1/2

This game is pretty fun when playing through it, trying to explore all the rooms. You will pretty much enjoy it when playing it.

Overall: ***1/2

A pretty good game, you might want to buy it if you haven't, or at least rent it if you only want to play through it once, as it is pretty short although not too short. A pretty good Mario game, in my opinion.
