River City Ransom Review

By Misty Koopa

System: Good ol' NES!

Relese Date: 1990, I think...

Story: "I hold your city captive, and Ryan's girlfriend hostage. With my gangs of students and evil bosses, nobody can stop me now. Meet my demands - or else!... P.S. Alex and Ryan if you interfere, you'll be in for the fight of your lifes! ...Slick"

Yup, the evil "Slick" has taken over River City! And as you might have guessed, it's up to Alex and Ryan to save the day!

Controls: 9

Let's see... A is Punch, B is Kick, A or B lets you pick up a weapon, A has you use the weapon, B has you throw it, A+B has you jump. Move the control pad around to move. Tap left or right on the pad twice to run in that direction, and do a REALLY big jump with A+B after more then eight steps. Select lets you see the amount of money you have (press Select again to display health again), and Start pauses the game. Yeah, you're probably thinking "Oh my gosh, I have to learn all THAT?! O.O" but it's a sinch! It's very basic, and easy to get the hang of, trust me.

Graphics: 10

Dude, this may be a NES game but these are awesome graphics! This is Mario 3 graphics in a 3D environment.

Items: 8

Items in fight (yeah, it's an RPG): Stick (yes, a stick), Crate, Old Tire, Trash Can, Rock, Brass Nuckles, Lead Pipe.

Don't give me those looks, this is a street fighting game, what do you expect? Oh yeah, the 8 rating: I ain't going to list all the items! There's burgers, shoes, books, meat, CDs, toys... And mind you I am being VAGUE!

Size: 9

Big game. Yeah I can beat it in a little over an hour. So what? It's still a big game. Streets, malls, a playground, a tunnel, old buildings, a river (ha ha, River City, a river! Yeah...), and of course River City High. Yes, I am being vague again.

Music: 7

Ok, so there isn't much variety. Bleah. There's a kinda creepy theme for the abandoned buildings, a funky theme for the playground, bosses, bosses inside RCH, the second to last boss, and the final boss, of course. RCH has its own theme too. So do the inside of stores. And on the streets is the famous Street Theme, as I call it. It's a very catchy tune. I often find myself humming it as I beat up gang members.

Characters: 7

There's a bunch of gang members, and various bosses, and of course the people inside the stores, and OF COURSE Alex and Ryan and "Slick" and Ryan's girlfriend (her name is Cyndi, by the way). You are probably thinking "O.O WHAT?! HOW CAN YOU GIVE SUCH A HIGH RATING FOR THOSE CHARACTERS?!" Well, the gang members are all different. Very different. Some are athletes, others are exchange students, some are couch potatoes. Now do you see my point? I hope so!

Difficulty: 7

It may not seem hard at first, but trust me, it'll get harder. Especially by the time you start to fight the Zombies. They're really tough bosses. And Randy and Andy'll have you tearing your hair out. Seriously...

Overall: 10

Great game! I love it! You probably will too!

Recommendation: If you have a working NES, and you can actually find this game (very difficult to do), get it. If you can't get it, and your computer will let you use emulators, download it. It's a great game that at least deserves a try.
