Yoshi's Safari Review

By Blue Boo

Intro: Yoshi's Safari is a peculiar game. Instead of puzzles or basic platforming, this game combines adventure with first person shooter. This game will be seven star-rated, with one being the lowest and seven the highest. Duh.

Story: ***

Okay, the game is fun, but Nintendo obviously didn't think too much about the purpose. You start out in the Mushroom Kingdom. Peach tells you about a land called Jewelry Land, and that Bowser has taken it over. There are twelve jewels that keep the land powered or something, and Bowser has taken them. You have to save the king and the prince, and get all the jewels. Mario rides Yoshi around the land with a bazooka. Probably Toad's from SMRPG. It makes you wonder if Nintendo actually made it. It's almost as bad as Microsoft's storylines.

Graphics: *******

This game is for the SNES, but the graphics are outstanding. Though they slightly resemble Mario Kart's graphics, it also shows 3D motion. An example is the two-way path with the gate blocking one side. To choose the side, you have to shoot at it or not. But seeing it move is a sight to behold, as the SNES shows some real movement.

Control: *****

This game is very easy to control, seeing as how you only have to use your Super Scope, or mouse if you're using emulation. The only problem is the lack of control. The Super Scope is ALL you get to use unless you play two player. Although you can't control much, it's still pretty simple, but easier is not always best.

Fun Factor!: *****

Very fun game, but it's easy to grow tired of it, and because of that I removed a couple of points. Despite the fact stated, and even though the levels are simple, there's just something that makes you want to play again. Maybe it's the thought of shooting things and seeing the koopalings. Maybe Nintendo put some hypnotic voodoo in the game. Who knows?

Replay Value: ******

I've pretty much covered this in the Fun Factor section. Something just makes you want to keep playing.

Difficulty: **

Plain and simple. This game is way too easy. When you play the first level, you may expect a challenge, but after shooting a few things and fighting a Hammer Brother, you get to Lemmy. When you get there, you just shoot at the head until it's gone. Whoopty doo. Then you shoot Lemmy when he pops up until you defeat him. This rule applies for a few of the other Koopalings, and those who don't use this strategy are easy to beat. Why?
A: The weak points are easy to hit.
B: One shot at the things they shoot at you will destroy them.
C: They don't take much to defeat.
D: Your HP takes a long time to bring down.
E: You can easily get a Mushroom which gives you health if it somehow gets low.
Bowser is the only boss who is slightly hard, but he's still easy because you get a Mushroom.

Overall: ******

Despite the low difficulty and the bad story, this game is a must-play. It is hard to get, because you have to get the Super Scope and all the stuff. If you want to play this, get the rom if you can manage to find it. With it, your emulator should be able to make your mouse a Super Scope. I've heard that the scope is heavy, unfortunately, and I had to remove a star. That plus the story and difficulty.
