Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures Review

By Ludwig 222

Here's a Review for a Super Nintendo game called Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures, one that I bought for only $3 a couple of weeks ago. Unlike the arcade versions, you don't go through a maze and try to eat all the dots in it. Instead, you go on "missions" to get a particular item which will be somewhere, then you must return back home. You actually control a slingshot at the bottom of the screen (Pac-Man moves automatically). In each area, you can shoot things to interact with them. Some things in areas can be dangerous, and if you get hit by them, you'll have to start the area over. That's the basic information about this forgotten SNES game. The story varies depending on the mission, but basically a certain item is lost and you need to retrieve it, so onto the Review we go! And with a 0-4 star scale!

Graphics: ***

The graphics aren't too bad for a SNES game... In fact, the levels were designed pretty nicely. Okay, they aren't the best graphics for a SNES game, but they are okay.

Sound/Music: **

The sound/music here is pretty average. Pac-Man sounds pretty messed up, although everything else sounds real. There are a few catchy tunes I like, like the Locked Door theme and the Rooftop theme, while other themes like Pac-Man's or Lucy's house are boring. So, overall, the score here is average.

Difficulty: *

This game is overall an easy one. Most of the difficulty comes from the Dangerous Cave and Misty Flight levels, both of which can be somewhat hard. The hardest part of the Dangerous Cave is when you see the ghosts with things moving up and down; it's totally random whether you'll pass or not. The Misty Flight level is hard because you have to avoid touching nearly everything, which can be difficult. The only other difficult thing in this game I can find is that it's nearly impossible to get through the Park, although you don't need to (it's just a shortcut from the Old Arcade to the Village Way).

Controls: ****

When I bought this game, I didn't get an instruction manual, but I still had an easy time with the controls. Hold B for a split-second and let go to shoot something (using the Control Pad to aim), press X to shoot a Power Pellet, and use Y and the Control Pad to make Pac-Man look in a certain direction. These three controls are very easy to master, so the Controls section gets a perfect rating.

Characters: **1/2

Well, basically there's Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Pac Jr, Pac-Baby, Lucy, the four ghosts (Inky, Pinky, Blinky, and Clyde), and some evil witch whose name is unknown. Okay characters, although it doesn't seem like much.

Levels: *

Oh, come on! There are only four kinds of areas in this game (Village, Mountain, City, and Factory). You can now figure out that this game is very short, and it is. You'll also think that's going to make the game really bad. Well, see the Overall rating. But anyway, although there are only four kinds of areas, there are a bunch of little areas inside of them, making the rating not no stars or 1/2. But still, there are very few levels.

Items: **

There aren't too many items in the game, but the ones that are here are okay. There are Power Pellets, which help you eat ghosts. There are also ID Cards, which you need to access the final boss, Cartridge Pieces, which can make you play Ms. Pac-Man in the Old Game Center, a train and lift pass, and the items you need to retrieve for each mission. Okay items, but not a lot of them.

Arcade Pac-Man/Ms. Pac-Man Mode: **

This classic arcade game is an average mode in this game. It's pretty difficult, and the game doesn't save your scores except for the first time you play it. Those two factors make the score fall down quite a bit, making this score average.

Replayability: **

You might think that I'd give this category no stars since it's so short, but actuall, I might play this game again. I can try to get above 20,000 points in the Pac-Man/Ms. Pac-Man game, or I can just play that secret Time Trial again and again. Of course, the game doesn't save your scores, which kind of makes it useless to play it, but it's pretty fun anyway.

Fun Factor!: ***1/2

This is actually a really fun game for me to play, I say! No, I didn't mean to rhyme. I seem to like to play it even today, because it's pretty fun.

Overall: **

Although this game can be pretty fun, it might not be worth a buy. It's definitely worth a rent, and you might want to buy it if you find it at a really cheap price like I did. If the game was longer, I'd have this score higher. It's a totally average game.
