Sonic Adventure 2: Battle Review

By Da Real Kooky

I’m here to review the first game made by Sega after it became a 3rd party publisher, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle for the Nintendo Gamecube.

ESRB Rating: E for Everyone

Story:

This game has two unique storylines, based on what story you choose, either Hero or Dark.

On the Hero Side, Sonic, a speedy blue hedgehog with an attitude, is accused of stealing one of the seven powerful gems of his world, the green Chaos Emerald, and is chased down and captured by the military force known as G.U.N. The game begins when he escapes from a GUN helicopter and falls toward the city below, on a piece of metal he uses like a snowboard. Throughout the Hero Side, he gets recaptured but is saved by Tails the two-tailed Fox, and Amy Rose the hedgehog, who appears to have a crush on Sonic. From there, it’s up to Sonic, Tails, Knuckles the Echidna, and Amy to find out who the real emerald thief is and foil the plans of the diabolical Dr. Eggman, onboard the Space Colony, ARK...

As for the Dark Side, Dr. Ivo Robotnik, nicknamed Eggman by most people, discovers a disk containing the journal of his grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik. In it, Eggman learns of a secret military weapon on Prison Island, and goes there to find out what it is. This secret weapon turns out to be a mysterious black hedgehog with red strips on his quills named Shadow, who claims to be the Ultimate Lifeform. Throughout the Dark Side, Eggman travels up to the Space Colony ARK, created by his grandfather, and learns of a powerful weapon capable of destroying an entire world with the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds. Eggman plans to use it for world domination, while one Rouge the Bat, a treasure hunter who joins up to help search out the emeralds, travels the world for the shards of the shattered Master Emerald, trying to find them all before Knuckles the Echidna, while Shadow struggles with painful memories of his closest friend, Maria, who was Gerald Robotnik’s daughter and died when the Space Colony ARK was shut down. Shadow tries to fulfill Maria’s wish for him, not knowing that her real wish was lost within the depths of his mind...

Maria Robotnik’s true wish may come true when both stories become one in the end. It’s a race to save the world... or conquer it!

Out of 10, I give the storyline an 8.

Characters:

This game has a total of six playable characters, as well as many others in cinematic sequences. The characters all have different personalities as well. The game has a healthy balance of major and minor characters in the story mode, as well as interactive Chao creatures in the Chao Garden.

Out of 10, I give the characters a 6.

Controls:

The controls are very easy to learn in this game, however, some characters have different controls than others. Sonic and Shadow have the same controls as do Tails and Eggman, Knuckles and Rouge.

Out of 10, I give the controls a 7.

Camera:

This aspect of the game I didn’t like at all. The camera is always in a set position, and even though it can be rotated with L and R, will always go back to that same position, which points to the end of the level. Backtracking in this game is very, very hard with the camera.

Out of 10, I give the camera a 2.

Graphics:

The graphics being very solid and the colors being eye-catching, along with good framerate, make this game a sight to behold when moving through levels at high speed.

Out of 10, I give the graphics a 7.

Music:

This is where the game is at its strongest. Most tunes in the Story Mode of this game have lyrics to go along with them. The songs are very catchy and it’s fun to sing along. Each character also has their own unique theme song. Though many themes and tunes in the game do not have lyrics, it’s still just as fun to listen and enjoy.

Out of 10, I give the music a 10!

Extras:

The extras in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle are placed very nicely and range from extra features and a Final Story after finishing Story Mode to the 2-Player Battle Mode to the Chao Garden to a special level when all mission emblems are collected. Extras are fun to unlock in any game, and this game has ‘em! It even has extra level-up items that the characters can use to help them throughout the game.

Out of 10, I give extras an 8.

Fun Factor!:

This game is very fun indeed. When cruising through levels at high speed, blasting and marching through levels in mecha walkers, using your head when searching out Gems, or spending your free time raising Chao, you’ll always have a fun and good time when playing this game.

Out of 10, I give the Fun Factor a 9.

Replay Value: While wanting to play a game over and over again depends on how much trouble one might’ve had during the game or how much they liked it, replaying is always good if you want to find everything.

Out of 10, I give the Replay Value a 6.

Overall: 7 out of 10!

I strongly recommend buying this game if you can find it, If you don’t have a GameCube you should get the original for the Sega Dreamcast. If you aren’t convinced enough to buy it then I recommend renting. This is a magnificent video game and should be enjoyed by all.
